Its depends on the department rules and what company certified the instrutor who is certifying you. Most cases it is voluntary.

They do exposures to give officer leverage in court. If there Is an accidental death initiated by the taser (suspect falling/ head injury/ cardiac arrest etc.) the attorney askes the Officer "you carry the taser, how do you know it won't kill someone?"

The Officer can then explain that he/she has been exposed to it and fully understand it's effects.

Some people are affected by it more than others, depending on how much electricity bothers you. Notice how this guy wouldn't even have gone down, while other people go down like a tree.

The good news is, it's over with really quick. So the trick is mental preparation-don't agonize over it, don't dwell on it, don't get all tensed up. Just go do it and it's over in a heartbeat!
