  • I think that in the Tlaxcalteca's transition from allies of the Spaniards to being their vassals, the use of religion by the Spaniards was key. Of course, in taking control of a civilized people, it's always key to first get control of the leaders, & those leaders submitting to the invader's overlordship usually means that they can keep much of their wealth & political power over the people that they had been ruling, as long as they ruled within the bounds that the invaders imposed on them.

  • That's a huge point! I was surprised to learn that the illiad was a poem memorized and kept alive in an oral tradition. This is the beginning of Western civilization. At this time Egypt had a literary tradition. I study philosophy and was again surprised to learn that the totality of pre-socratic writings is only a few scrolls. What is overwhelming is not the source texts, but the commentary and intepretation of text. What is important is the commitment of the progeny to the culture.
