I just noticed something on his audience management. At 4:35 et seq he actually shuts the black guy up, realising he is getting irritating and over the top. The black guy nods his head when Tommy reprimands him as if to say "yes, sorry I was being annoying"
@heelfan1234 Nah, he wants his audience to get into the trick as much as possible. He pays special attention to that guy, and he wasn't being annoying. Good magicians ignore hecklers because they know it's the best way to make them shut up.
@1971ojoalparche1971 I realise he knows David who is in all the videos, and has a tendancy to overeact and overact (he is a planted stooge to try and wow up the effects so people will buy the DVDs).
But in this case I think he realises David is making it look too cras and he calms him down, shutting him up
4:57 to 5:00 you can see him blatantly fiddling around folding up the card while the audience are clapping. His sleights are not that brilliant, a lot of it is good misdirection.
@heelfan1234 Dude, no one cares about the sleights. And saying" LOOK LOOK he did this at this point" doesn't do anything but hurt the effect. At least respect the art, and remove the comments.
@LeDiableBlanck It's helping people who are thinking of performing the effect themselves to appreciate what is involved. These threads are like a magic club where techniques are discussed.Don't deny students some help and clarification of the method, that is very selfish.
@heelfan1234 Wait wait wait, I get your point. If you want to help your magic buddies it's ok, It's common, I do it too, but then at least send a PM or something. Youtube it's open to ALL public which means anyone can see this video and check the comments, not revealing the effect here it's not being selfish, it's common sense.
@LeDiableBlanck Don't get hung up over the exposure thing. Penn and Teller exposed palming, the thumb tip, and the cups and balls to millions, yet these principles and effects still mystify as much as ever. Exposure is simply a non issue, especially on a tiny thread on YT read 95% by magicians anyway. The only people who get excited about it are old school magicians who can't get their heads around the true facts.
@heelfan1234 You are not seriously comparing your actions to Penn and Teller's are you? It's true that exposure is something that is not meant to be taken as a rule; but there is a difference between exposing something as part of entrainment or with some good intention, and just saying LOOK LOOK at his hand THERE he's not that good. Those comments aren't done with any good intention in mind but to hurt the performances, and don't give me the "don't deny students some help and clarification" crap
@LeDiableBlanck It's not crap. Many students wan't some explanation on the effects. You can see them asking in the threads. I try and help them out where I can. Anyway, this ambitious card routine is not that brilliant, it is pretty standard. It only looks good because the stooge audience are raving and having orgasms over nothing! I've met many selfish magicians like you before, but that's life and why people as a rule don't like magicians who smug, arrogant, and stuck-up.
@heelfan1234 "4:57 to 5:00 you can see him blatantly fiddling around folding up the card while the audience are clapping. His sleights are not that brilliant, a lot of it is good misdirection."
Yeah, you clearly are just trying to "educate" others. Cut the bullshit, you do this for yourself, I bet you comment on every video you find exposing everything to get attention, and when someone replies to shut you up you try to come up like the victim. Have some fcking shame and shut up
@LeDiableBlanck There isn't any use talking to heelthemoron. He/she is not even a magician which is obvious or if they are they only buy their effects from Penguine or Ellusionist which still doesn't make them much of a magician since they will never know the true history or much of anything else about magic. Let alone how to perform it wll at all.
@LeDiableBlanck It got a standing ovation because it is an audience of stooges. They are the L and L crowd who appear in most of the Tommy Wonder vids. They are primed to clap and wow and OMG in all the right places and go along with the effects to make them seem more magical. L and L sell magic so of course they are going to stooge up the spectators to make the effects appear fantastic, it's simple marketing. Watch the black guy at the front - he is really annoying.
@heelfan1234 You mean David? Naaa man he's hilarious :P. I know the L & L crowd man, I know they will go nuts for a simple trick, but this is different. In the Vol 3 of the DVDs Max Maven said that the audience was NOT told by Louis Falanga (the director) to give a standing ovation and they also didn't know that that was the last trick (cause L & L audiences tend to stand at the end when they know it's the last effect). The response you see here it's true and spontaneous.
@LeDiableBlanck Magicians are used to telling white lies for effect. For example Tommy says the signed card was never in the deck in the deck, it was always in the box (lie). Once you start telling them it's not easy to stop.
As for David, you may find him hilarious, I just find him annoying. The way he leans forward with his hands clasped together and his inane comments is annoying. He is just not a very good actor I guess. The woman in the blue on the left is much more natural.
@heelfan1234 Ok stop just there, you just said something very stupid. So just because I perform magic no one should ever believe what I say cause I'm a liar?
Maybe you misunderstood me (sorry if that's the case), I was talking about Max Maven, not Tommy. One thing it's Max Maven performing, another is Max Maven sitting with Tommy Wonder discussing his effect, and telling to the buyers the real works behind it.
@LeDiableBlanck It's not stupid. Telling white lies performing magic, and telling white lies about a commercial relationship - corporate speak in other words - requires a similar technique. A bit of preparation, thinking on one's feet, and knowing a bit more than your audience about the subject. Magic is acting and so is corporate relations. Besides, no doubt Tommy was also his friend and he's not exactly going to show him up in front of others about prepping the L&L crowd or otherwise!!
@heelfan1234 Your still not defending your point, it's obvious that telling lies requires the same abilities in different venues, that still doesn't mean you should never trust what a magician talking IN THEIR OWN DVD about information for the buyers that already BOUGHT the effect, that involves not friendship, but INTEGRITY, if you believe that Max is really someone with no respect for the buyer and no integrity, I assume you have hard proof, cause your making a serious accusation.
@LeDiableBlanck Look, it's still in the public domain if he puts on a DVD. He is not going to admit that the audiences are stooged and prepped on a DVD, in an interview, on TV, on You Tube or otherwise.
Whether the audience is prepped is not the point. The fact is he would never admit it if they were. Therefore your point is irrelevant.
They clearly are prepped in my opinion because no audience I have ever seen for a magic show behaves in this stupid, banal, exaggerated fashion.
@heelfan1234 Ok, 1: "he would never admit it if they were" False, by saying that for this effect they were not prepped he also meant that in other times they are or might be.
2: Trust me, real audiences can reach this level, especially drunk crowds, If YOU have never seen an audience like behave like that then YOU have a different perspective, but if THAT'S the case then from the beginning you have to say that it's not a fact but an opinion, and you didn't until now.
I admire how Tommy Wonder weaves ancient philosophical ideas into his performance. All the cards feel normal “except the [signed] 4 of hearts, now it feels very important, it’s logical, the chosen name on it.. it’s a birthday card”.. “it goes thru the other cards to the top”.. “you know, I became a magician to find out how I do this?”.. “you will get every chance to see how it’s not done”.. “in reality, of course, the card it doesn’t go to the top, it’s imagination” and so on.. Well done, Tommy!
this is a very simple and easy routine, I have performed it many times.. however, the bit I am stumped on is the ending! how did he do it?? could somebody explain to me
@monkeyman822 Hi. He folds the card up at 4:57 to 4:49, then finger palms it, later transferring to his right hand behind the deck of cards at 5:24 so he can show his left empty. Then he picks up the box with his left showing a prefolded card which is already glued in there. Now in the act of dumping the card out into his right hand, he brings the signed card into the open hanging mouth of the box, letting it fall out into the right while closing the box hiding the duplicate prefolded one
he does the mercury fold at 4:59 when everybody is laughing and excited and distracted. a perfect time to do it. he could have done the worst mercury fold ever and nobody would have noticed. his timing, misderection and execution are the closest you can get to perfect.
i can see every move he makes but doing it, executing every move is the hard part, it will take a long time of practicing to be able to do it smooth and flawless.
I have heard of other great magicians referring to Tommy Wonder and his par excellence handling and showmanship, but this is the first time I have seen him 'in the flesh' as it were..... forget the magic, really, the way he worked that crowd was incredible, the dramatic pause at 1.46 and the flick of the card to the table for effect was impressive as was the impromptu standing ovation. Simply amazing!!!! A lot of material just in this one clip to perfect for a lifetime. WOW!!!!
@websitesbykevcouk lol you stole every single word out of my mouth! I am a magician; this is the first time I've ever seen him...and...the crowd...plus myself....was entertained every step of the way.
ok, i got everything except the end. i think he palmed her folded card and when he flipped the box over he kinda shoved it in then dropped it out all in one motion and the first bent card is just taped to the bottom of the box or something.
This is one of TW's premier effects who brought it to a pinnacle with his famous ring box ending.A real shame that this most talented magician has passed away and will be sorely missed.
This is the best ACR I´ve seen to date. Everything about it is great. Plot, audience management, surprises, climax. I think you can´t get any better than this.
The entire routine is amazing. I've seen this 100 times and it is still exhilarating. My favorite part is when he does the big flourishes by pushing up his sleeves and things so it's obvious that's when he did the switch, right? And he says, no no, I didn't do anything, the card is still there. So great.
there are guys, magicians all over youtube doing this trick....working the cards as well as Wonder. but he SELLS IT ....so beautifully. it is sad. they put in all the pratice and then throw the effect away.
not even close. I had an old lecture VHS which explained the card to box part of his ambitious card. The card doesn't go behind the box. Its MUCH more clever than that, a lot more psychological (for want of a better word). Tommy is the man though. I true master at what we do.
Anyone performing magic tricks should watch this to get a sence of: how you make a routine out of a trick; how you entertain instead of perform, and how you make magic be that -- magic. Tommy Wonder is a great inspiration and will be, with Derren Brown, the true reason I started to know what this was really all about.
Do any other magician viewers know if he teaches this in a book or dvd? There's a few things I can't quite work out for this routine, and I'd love to learn it.
@Eldamir19 when does he do the switch to the box man?becuz i dont see it.... and how does he get the turn over card to the top... its not a pass becuz we would see it right? please help
@JUANO510 I really recommend you the DVD, too. You will be amazed of his clever thinking. It's one of the best DVDs I've ever seen. Especially the AC-routine. You're thinking of this routine will change completely ...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wow, he's one of the greatest
Lovely AC routine (it took me a lot of rewinds to see that he switches the signed card with the card in the little box..it closes so fast that you can hardly see it)
@BenzoatoSodico 100% agree. But Tommy is what makes it so good, he was a truly brilliant entertainer. Give another magician that same routine and it would look nowhere near as good.
@BenzoatoSodico It proves the old dictum, that it's not what you do, but how you present it. His presentation is utterly flawless, magic is poorer for having lost him.
This has the best trick I have ever seen. Not only is it brilliant technical skill, but the presentation is fantastic. I was close to giving it a standing ovation from my monitor.
yeah howd he get it into the ringbox then. please tell us oh mighty genius. tell us every move he did in graphic detail. and you wont break the magicians code right because you not a magician. please we're all itching to here here your crap explanation.
Right after he said: Me neither, but it's there!" 4:54 You can see him fold the card. The card in the box is an indifferent card but he pretend to take it out of the box when the signed card is already folded in his hand
I guess I am one of the lucky ones who have never heard of Tommy Wonder before but truly love performing artists like this. I am in awe of his performance and have no idea how it's done. I will enjoy this feeling before I am tempted to research how such sleight of hand is done. Just fantastic. I will certainly be chasing up his and Bill Malone's work. Pure genius! masters of the art I say. thanks for sharing this vid!!

Nerd out on the magic all you want, it's his charisma you should be watching. Tony controls the crowd as much as the cards. Bravo
TheMidasRaw 1 year ago
ok, i got everything except the end. i think he palmed her folded card and when he flipped the box over he kinda shoved it in then dropped it out all in one motion and the first bent card is just taped to the bottom of the box or something.

4:46 LOL everybody is staring at the deck
peterkattukzee 1 year ago
The entire routine is amazing. I've seen this 100 times and it is still exhilarating. My favorite part is when he does the big flourishes by pushing up his sleeves and things so it's obvious that's when he did the switch, right? And he says, no no, I didn't do anything, the card is still there. So great.

there are guys, magicians all over youtube doing this trick....working the cards as well as Wonder. but he SELLS IT ....so beautifully. it is sad. they put in all the pratice and then throw the effect away.
oakdogdave 1 year ago 9
@oakdogdave some even with extra phases that are even more "visual."
i definitely agree. no one can sell it like wonder

At 4:55 he folds the card and at 5:40 he switch the folded card with the prepared one...
I wish i could do that as well as he does. Doing that stuff without the audience catching him needs a real magician!

getting rid of that folded card in the box is done incredibly. I have watched that a few times and still can't see where it goes. Masterly. Respect.
jeannicol1969 2 years ago
I believe it goes behind the ring box. It's done extremely clean, great magician and performance.
SherlockH33 2 years ago
not even close.

@Eldamir19 when does he do the switch to the box man?becuz i dont see it.... and how does he get the turn over card to the top... its not a pass becuz we would see it right? please help
JUANO510 1 year ago
@JUANO510 Sorry, but I can't tell you. If you realy want to know, you can learn the secret from his DVD, Tommy Wonder - Visions of Wonder 3.
Eldamir19 1 year ago
@JUANO510 I really recommend you the DVD, too. You will be amazed of his clever thinking. It's one of the best DVDs I've ever seen. Especially the AC-routine. You're thinking of this routine will change completely ...

Lovely AC routine (it took me a lot of rewinds to see that he switches the signed card with the card in the little box..it closes so fast that you can hardly see it)

Probably the best AC routine I've seen.
BenzoatoSodico 2 years ago 47
@BenzoatoSodico 100% agree. But Tommy is what makes it so good, he was a truly brilliant entertainer. Give another magician that same routine and it would look nowhere near as good.
ninman58 1 year ago
@BenzoatoSodico Probably? no man! its the best ;-)
galentir 1 year ago
@BenzoatoSodico It proves the old dictum, that it's not what you do, but how you present it. His presentation is utterly flawless, magic is poorer for having lost him.
StKildaFan 1 year ago
@StKildaFan Definitely! his sense of momentum, his relaxed pose, his timming and yes, also his flawles technique. One of the all time greatest!

Great..his Tamed Card is unbelievably better. There is only one way he could do the card to box though.....(unless he was using real magic)
Cardwiz1 2 years ago
how did he put the card into the box?

If I told you you would be disappointed. Mystery is a much better feeling then knowing how it is done, trust me.

Right after he said: Me neither, but it's there!" 4:54 You can see him fold the card. The card in the box is an indifferent card but he pretend to take it out of the box when the signed card is already folded in his hand

exactly, but the magic its not in the trick. Its in the performance
