I'm new to knives and was looking at Benchmade for a high-end folder. I saw some today and honestly didn't see the quality over Gerber and Kershaw made in China. I guess even "Made in USA" now means made in a 3rd world sweat shop. What's an alternative to Benchmade though for high-end folding knives?

Kershaw, Gerber, and SOG make some models here in the US and they are good. It really depends on the style of knife so we can narrow it down for you.

@Roadsideimports Well I want something about 3 to 3.5 inches and doesn't look too "tactical" because I might be carrying it in an office environment. Assisted opening is ok. I was interested in the "Bitchmade" (heh) 470. I still haven't seen one in a local store but for $170 the quality better be there and the ones I did see didn't seem worth it. I have Kershaw with 2.25 inch blade I just wanted something slightly longer. I may get another Kershaw because they seem to have good quality for price

@bobsuruncle789 Go on a tour of the plant and see how many you can spot. A friend of mine went to the plant & told me he saw alot of people who couldn't speak English. Now to be fair that doesn't mean they are illegals, I mean everyone who has green cards and that are born here don't speak English. But since his visit it was reported to ICE to investigate the plant and since they do not disclose this sort of info on the finding who knows what occurred but they did get investigated

Benchmade's main factory is in Oregon, and it also contracts many local businesses for services keeping jobs in Oregon at a time when Oregon needs it badly. Many other cutlery companies are increasingly looking to Asia to have their blades made while Benchmade, Kershaw, and a few other cutlery companies in Oregon are making an effort to keep a majority of their products made in America. Regarding the claims of a gender based income disparity I don't have enough info to comment.

I don't have enough knowledge to comment about many of your Benchmade claims but I can say as far as I've seen this claim is false. I suppose it's not impossible that there are illegal immigrants working there, but they sure aren't from Mexico. Furthermore most of the employees there are obviously American born.

That is very untrue. Most of their items are now in their shitty red class and those are now made in China. They get parts and pieces made in China. I have had a personal friend go to the Oregon location and they saw alot of people whom did not speak any English at all, which raises the question of eligibility of work. Kershaw also imports most of its items into the US.

So the facts are correct the majority of both of these companies stuff is made in China and not the US.

True Oregon has major issues with employment that is for certain, but these two companies are not the savior to the problem. The issue lies deep with the entire industry and that people accept sub grade goods from China instead of demanding quality goods. The fact that Americans can be sold junk is a shameful thing and until the American public changes and demands quality for their money and things that are made by one another we truly are in alot of trouble in this country.
