The first craft to reach the region above earth where the laws of aerodymamics cease to apply.In my opinion it was the first spacecraft , and it's pilots are the first true astronauts !
@bikebeerrun1960 AMEN ! one of the most successful research airplanes ever. although technically it wasnt considered a spacecraft at the time, I agree with you 100% Personally I think its a spacecraft too because it did fly in space and back several times under pilot control ! much more desirable than riding in a capsule and ultimately hanging from a parachute waiting for splashdown IMHO (no disrespect to the space program those folks have balls of steel too)
@bikebeerrun1960 The X-15 has a noseball so it wont pitch and hydrogen peroxid retro rockets for stearing in outer space it could go into orbit with booster rockets
why is it that everyones grandad seemed to have worked on or designed these special projects? Is there a room somewhere full of grandads working on crazy Nasa projects?
@cjellwood It was a time where engineers were held in higher regard than they are now and there was also a "can do" attitude... I too had a grandfather who at one time worked for North American aviation
I wish we still put this kind of effort into today's aircraft. This thing is decades old but it can still make some of today's stuff look boring. If we kept pursuing super to hypersonic flight in this way all the way up to today, we would most definitely have a supersonic passenger plane that could also fly supersonic over land.
If the program had continued to a logical end, we might have had an operational ground to low-orbital space-launch platform in the early 1970's. What might have been....
THE X-15 and the SR-71 blackbird..the United States surpassed all nations..we should as of now hav a whole airfOrce that flies no less than 3500 M.P.H...we need a plane that manuevers like the raptor F-22A that flies 3500 M.P.H.
these guys paved the way for NASA. These guys took great risks b/c there was many unknowns flying at these altitudes. Even today it's considered dangerous imagine 50 years ago.
the sr 71 is still the fastest AND best real plane ie to take off and land without help

Why havent ppl deveoped fastest aircrafts? This one was made like 50 years ago and its still the fastest...

@vv55sst
Yeah at the end of the program the X-15 was a true spacecraft they should have kept up with developing a follow on project.
TheJomogogo 1 year ago
I don't think there is any argument about that. Virgin Galactic works off the same basic principals - 40 years later.

Vale Scott. You were a true hero of aviation.
Back then, anything was possible in aviation. Sadly today it seems we have lost those dreams.
Who knows where we could have gone if we had kept the dreams alive.
