I am surprised there are no comments about there being horses on a military training base.
This was released on June 22, 1942. There were still horses and equistrian cavalry training during this year in the Army. In fact, one cavalry unit brought their saddles with them to the South Pacific, in expectation of obtaining horses from Australia (or whereever they could scrounge them). The Army discontinued horses shortly after. Oddly, the the Army tried experimenting with camels.
the short you are thinking of is called 'Sky Trooper' and it came out 5 months after this one. The plot is almost identical... Disney clearly ripped of Woody
Absolutely hilarious! I love this short! My favorite Woody Woodpecker short so far! I just love how Woody is portrayed, and everything was so funny and well executed.

They just don't make theatrical cartoon shorts like they used to do they?
Anyone else feel this way?

There's just something about the bit with the guy's eyes at 2:00-04 that makes it one of the quintesential cartoon bits!

I remember this short. A classic - but it seems oddly similar to one WWII era cartoon with Donald Duck and Pete.
