  • i did this on my manniquen during my cosmetology class, it didn't turn out as nice as yours! and i cut it exactly with the diagram, all well, the hair cut i ened up with a cute cut anyway!! thank you for posting!!

  • Aha, I'll go do that. Lucky the haircut was cheap.

    As always THANK YOU.

  • Ashley, is your hair feathered or just blunt cut? my stylist butchered the ends, and I need them fixed, the curls aren't tapered!

  • @amaranthisme tapered! NOT blunt. Definitely go and get them tapered. It will be worth it even if you have a bit less length.

  • I just wanted to comment to say this is essentially a Diagonal back with long layers throughout. :x As a stylist I've been glaring at the diagrams and personally dont get them. haha, having looked at the cut on you and other youtubers i figured it out. :] lol!

  • @HummingbirdKrista Aren't they the same diagrams you study in beauty school? My stylist said they were. :)

  • @LisaFreemontStreet They may have been a few years back, the diagrams are alot different now. They more show the vertical elevations and stuff.. i tried to pull up a picture online but i cant find one, hahah they are all in my cosmo books

  • You're hair is beautiful! I'll have to try it out sometime!

  • Love all your videos. Thank you for all your tutorials, they are so helpful & inspiring ; ). On a side note, I love the blue color on the wall in the background. Would love to know what brand & color it is. Thanks!!!

  • @missbridgetk Thanks so much. :) I do miss this color. :( We live in a rental house now and I'm not allowed to paint the walls. This was my favorite color at the old house...it is a color from Porter Paints called Deep Peacock. I used the color three shades lighter on the same paint chip for the kitchen (which you can see off of this room). It was called Milan Turquoise.

  • Love this video and all your others. You got this awesome cut in Carthage? I'm just 20 minutes from there. You've totally inspired me to bite the bullet and get a middy cut.

  • I've been thinking about getting my hair cut like this but would the diagram only be in that particular book or are there other sources I could go to? Perhaps the other vintage hairstyle book (vintage hairstyles by Lauren Renells) or would it not be in that?

  • @dramaindulged no....I have only seen it in this book. But you can just ask for a layered haircut.

  • @LisaFreemontStreet Alrightie! Thanks :D

  • Thank you so much for showing me what the middy (long) looks like unstyled! I was thinking about getting it, but was too worried about what it would look like on days I was too lazy to curl it! You are awesome, and I love your youtube channel and blog - thanks!

  • @koolqueen4freddie I had a longer response but when I re-watched this video and realized that 'a minute into the video' doesnt even have any background noise to speak of, I felt that my original response was unnecessarily apologetic. I have kids...lots of them. I couldnt care less if you find them distracting. :)

  • Women also cut their hair shorter in the '30s and '40s because they could sell their hair to rayon producers.

  • How do you think the long middy would work for naturally thick, wavy hair?

  • @fithealthyhips

Very well...look at Rita Hayworth! Her hair was very wavy and thick...so was Ava Gardner's.

  • You inspired me and I took the middy diagram to an old lady stylist at great clips today, I got the middy plus and she did a great job, my hair is naturally curly it looks really rock and roll a little hipster without styling I can not wait to play with it! I have watched all of your videos just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you!

  • You look like uma thurman with this haircut, because she had her hair like this at one point :]

  • Do you have an example of the other hair styles in the book? I can't really tell by the diagram what the overall cut would look like for some...

  • @KiwiMangoLove I have recreated many of the styles in this book in this Authentic Vintage Hair Techniques series as well as my other videos. I have the middy haircut for all the videos following this one so go thru the list for ideas.

  • I wish I could see all your videos but most of them are not available in my country - because of the music and Sony :-(

  • I apologize for that. I tried re-uploading some of these but youtube won't allow a double upload. I am showing that 45 of my 133 videos have copyright matches. So hopefully you'll be able to enjoy those until the copyright laws change...which i do think will happen. The more viewers I get, the more I have to back up my claim to 'fair use' of this music...so keep watching. :)

  • i have a question. My hair is all one length just below the shoulder blades and naturally straight. and Id like to style it Veronica lake style. does that book have a diagram for that? Ive been looking everywhere for something i can give to a styleist to get that look. thank you :)

  • I have a video describing the Veronica Lake technique...you can do it yourself. :) Make sure to check the video response to see the results of someone who tried the technique.

  • looks fantastic and it even looks good with no style. which alot of girls ive herd complain how they didnt like how their retro hair doesnt move or do anything un styled.

  • I am planning on getting a middy long cut in a few days, but was wondering if you were able to pull your hair back into a ponytail at all? If not then I'll probablly increase the length even more. Thanks Savannah-Rose

  • At 7:12 I pull it up to show that I can indeed put it into a ponytail. Plus, the video shortly after this (George Petty pin up hairstyle) shows that I put it in two ponytails up high w/ no issues. :)

  • The cut looks really cute on you as-is!

  • looks lovely

  • Thank you dearest love your vids,,, will keep watching.. ;)

  • ok I just read down a bit,, did not look before I posted I am sorry .

  • I very much enjoy your vids but a couple questions. I have natural curly hair are these haircuts still what you think would work with my hair. Or is there a haircut that may work better. I am so ready for a change other than the long wave thing.. ohh and my hair is kinda thinning due to my medication. any suggestions for that?

  • Yes I was going to say that the layers will be just the solution for thinning hair. But always make sure to consult a trusted stylist before 'making the cut', to make sure it will work for you hair texture. :)

  • Thank you for the book recommendation. Do you happen to have any other favorite books that might offer cutting instructions for longer styles of the 40's?

  • Actually these are the styles of the 1940's...the exception to the rule was Veronica Lake which was mainly all one length. However, all you really need to do is tell your stylist to cut it the same length all over. If you want your layers to be 12 inches, she'll simply cut it 12 inches all over so that the top hair falls above the bottom hair etc. Easy Peasy.

  • Would this haircut work with naturally curly hair? My hair is really curly. :)

  • It would work w/ some 'thinning' but you'll need to consult with your stylist about that. :)

  • I got the book and i'm excited! I know you said you had them follow the diagram exactly... but i'm still wary of the bangs. Yours look good, did you really do the 5 1inch panels back to the crown? I'm worried how bangs that go all the way back to my crown are going to look. I wear a ponytail at work so it might look weird.

  • Yes I followed the diagram exactly on the 'middy long' hair cut. Don't think of them as bangs as much as face framing layers...and it will look great w/ a ponytail, especially if curved under at the ends. Or, if yu don't like it, they will still be long enough to aim back in a small pompadour, which is really popular right now.

  • Omg, your right of course! I read the info and pics wrong, at first glance I was thinking the top hair panels were all going to lay forward or something:) Thanks for the pompadour suggestion, makes the change less scary.

  • I think it looks cute straight too! Just wondering, did she razor cut it or use only scissors? My hair is just above shoulder length and is a grown out "shag" that was razor cut and textured. I'm wanting to try these lovely 40's styles, and I wonder if it will work on my hair.

  • Just scissors! :)

  • lisafremontstreet -- thank you for posting this video and OUR book! a customer of ours contacted us to let us know she found us through you on youtube -- and she wanted us to pass on that she used to live in hickman and wished she had known you then! contact us if you want to youtube more styles/books of ours -- we'll hook you up!!!

  • I love that your house sounds just like mine! Thanks so much for helping us mamas look and feel our best! Crying babies and all!

  • if this is the "longest" middy, then I can potentially have this hair style! (I favor shorter styles), you have given me new hope HAHA.

  • what EXACTLY is the name of the book?

  • 'Creative Hairshaping and Hairstyling' (it's a reprint of a book by Ivan Anderson) You can get it on Amazon thru Bramcost Publications.

  • I took the same diagram into the hair salon and the lady was completely baffled. I think she did the best she could but oh well, it's a little funky.

  • That's a shame. It means they get complacent doing haircuts based on photos and don't attempt to retain the info they learned in beauty school. If they act clueless, it's easier just to tell them to cut it the same length all over...they do get that. :)

  • I love that you're playing a Squirrel Nut Zippers song at the beginning and end. :D

    They're my favorite band ever.

  • I play the whole song in the Styling video. :) The one called 'Styling the Middy'

  • thanks for all of your great video's! I love this cut...I want to get it but I'm afraid. My hair is soooooo thick & wavy/curly. It might end up poofing & I don't want a fro!

I think the layers are just too short for my type of hair :(

  • your hair looks super cute as is!

  • If I brought in that diagram to get my hair cut that way would a person from say Supercuts know how to do it? Oh and if I wanted to try the 10-in. middy how long would the sides and the rest of the hair be?

  • Well, like I said, the salon I went to was a little country salon and they knew how to do it. They said the diagrams are basic 'beauty school' stuff so if the Supercuts person went to beauty school, then I'm sure they'll be able to do it. And the 10 inch layers are not technically the middy so no diagram would be necessary. You just simply tell the stylist to cut your hair ten inches all over. It will be past your shoulders.

  • Hey you...great video! Keep up the wonderful work! R

  • Thanks, Rachel!

  • Thank you so much for posting this...I've had the book for awhile, and now it will be much easier to explain it to a hairdresser. You make awesome visual tutorials. Wheee!!

  • your beautiful !! :P love ur videos keep it up

  • thank you so much for this video, i recently got my hair cut in a middy and was a bit sad that most of my length was gone...but like you said in another of your videos you have to commit to the look! i am excited to watch you try new things and try to recreate the look!

thanks so much and keeps the amazing videos comming!! xo

  • i love it!

  • you are just so pretty you'd look great in any hair cut!

  • Thanks so much for this info. I went to Amazon and looked at that book. I didn't buy that book, but looking at it led to my buying three other books, photographs of famous 1930-1950 stars and a makeup book on 1940's. Thanks so much!

  • could i get this at barnes and nobles?

  • I don't think so. You can check though.

  • Love it! This was exactly what I needed before I went to the stylist and they chopped off a head full of hair..but so GLAD you did!!! This is GREAT! I had the 1940s Hairstyle book from Daniela Turudich and it looks like your book has alot more info on each cut....great vid as always! :P

  • Children do pick their moments, bless em :)

LOVE the hairdo - I used to have something very similar, but I've grown it out now. I'm just in the process of growing out my fringe (bangs). I don't know whether I could go that short again - but it looks fabulous on you :)

Incidentally, tried the formal wedding style at the weekend - didn't have time to do a video but got a ton of compliments, thank you!

  • Wonderful! I'm so glad. :)

  • I think you are adorable. I can't believe you still have hair on your head after being home all day with 3 boys. I don't know how my mom did it.

  • You do what you have to do. :)

  • Your color and cut is just beautiful!

  • I would LOVE to do my hair that short, but my huby would have a cow. He wants super long hair, and I am not going there. I have THICK naturally curly hair and the longer it gets the bigger pain it becomes. I have convinced him to live with it just past my shoulders, about 8 in. long. I am not going to go longer than that.

    However....LOOKS GREAT!!!!

  • My husband likes my hair long as well but he has learned that he can not get used to any one look from me because it's bound to change. Since he grows his facial hair (beard, clean shave, mustache, handlebar mustache, pork chop sideburns, goatee, vandyke beard) at a will and does whatever he wants when he wants, I figure it evens out. :)

  • Oh I forgot. The book is out of print so if you wanted it, you'd have to check it out from a library. It's like $200 and up on ebay. lol

  • lol I knew the hair dresser I went to, knew how to do that cut! I went to try and get the middy plus last year and the girl said she didn't know how to do it. It seemed more, like she was afraid to do it. I don't know why. I have the same diagram except mine came from a 1940's hairstyling book by Daniela Turudich. She also wrote a book on makeup techniques from the 1920's to the 50's or 60's. I can't remember. You should check it out. I think you might like it.

  • One of my darling subscribers sent me a pdf file of that book. It is a great one...and yes, they are the same diagrams. She got them from this book.

  • Love the new cut! So excited to see the looks you can create!! Thank you so much for your videos. :)

  • your hair looks lovely :) you've had quite a bit of hair chopped off!! Braver than me :) Xx

  • I like that! It looks like you can achieve a lot of different looks with it! I love that you can go from rock-n-roll to straight up glam in a matter of seconds with it. :)

  • hmmm, well maybe ALOT of second. Haha. I did style it in 20 minutes today using hot rollers and it does look very 'glam'.

  • I love your hair! I think its cute!
