  • can't kill an old red!

  • under all that grease and dust there is an australian legend

  • Beautiful sound. My first car was a 72' HQ sedan, resplendent in San Remo Gold with white roof ( SRG was better known as 'Telecom Orange' ). It was an old farm car and by the time i'd finished it had a set of original 'Sandman wheels', headers and a single 2" exhaust, springs and gas shocks. If you approached a corner then at a reasonable pace, it would atempt to actually go round said corner without falling over. Never got around to replacing the old three on the tree though. Best wishes.

  • Just love the sucking sound of the old single throat Stromberg. Those old Holdens have a unique sound, my old man had a 202 HQ for over 25 years, jeez I miss that sound, and the fact there are about 3 wires to make the engine run. Not many of them left, do her proud.

  • coupe utility is what the utes had on the compliance plates. Very true i had so much trouble tryind to insure one cause the insurance company could only come up with a two door monaro

  • OHV inline sixes just will not die!

  • its alive!!!

  • If you want that top end to be silent, change the lifters and pushrods, and you will barely know it's running

  • Great to see the beast running.I brought my HQ Kingswood for 200 bucks from a farmer as he claims the car sat there from the mid 80s in the bush near 20 years too.5years to complete the rebuild( factory specs) from headlight to rear my car looks showroom. I'm sure you will enjoy your project too:)

  • I think its got a cracked head.

I'm pretty sure i can hear a valve not seating propperly or something and the idles high

she still runs pretty good though haha

  • so Australian, a beaut classic with the footy playing on the radio in the background. makes me remember my project car :)

  • @Paiste402 Yep, a bottle of red tinkering in the shed with the footy on is where I'm at when I have the chance.

  • she needs to be cleaned up a bit

  • Yup, sure does. In fact, you wouldn't recognise the old girl now. I'm rebuilding it from the ground up.... but the body shell is beyond help.....

  • Nice! Good to see another old Holden running :D Good job.

  • thats a good old red for you. 173 are the best 6. it has good comp and all you should keep it. cool vid..

  • What is a Coupe ute.? Surelly it's either a Coupe, which means it's probably a monaro... highly unlukely in this case with a straight 6, or more likely it's simply a a HQ ute?... or is there smonething I don't know abuot HQ utes?

Have fun... I love the old Holden red motors... my first car was a HT sedan / 186... was bullet proof.

  • There were two 'types' of HQ ute, the 'coupe' had a 2 door body and tray combined... and the 'one tonner', which had a tray separate to the cabin. It's no monaro!

  • Oh the memories. I want my first Holden back.

  • Good stuff!, I've got an old 173 on a palette that needs to be set up and ran, doesn't look lime theirs much to it!

But that ute will hammer with the 253 in it :D
