Whats up with all this "he must have James and D'Arcy in the band"...they were just session players. Billy was generous with givng them writing credit for the few songs they did receive it. Face it, it's Billy's band. Do any of you people go to the NIN sites and complain that Trent doesn't have the all the originals band members for each album? Of course you don't.
Jimmy on the other hand, he was kicked out for drugs problems, but he and Billy always remained friends. When smashing pumpkins broke up, he was the first one Billy called to form a new band (Zwan). They were the only two with the real talent, the other two were just freeloaders.
d'Arcy was always useless, she couldn't sing at all and always just stood still while playing. Early on they tried to use her image eg. on the single covers of Gish, but she always refused to help promote the band. Later on her drug problem got worse so Billy kicked her out and never wanted to have anything to do with her again.
Iha must have had a great time, freerolling along with some real talent, playing the support chords while Billy played the real music, but he contributed very little.
I love the Pumpkins (even some of Billy's new songs ;-) ) but every time I hear these guys speak I think what assholes. "Put out the feelers" my ass. Iha and D'Arcy were supposed to buy the newspaper on that day, was it? Corgan particularly is so far up his own ass his feet come out of his mouth. I hate it when he badmouths James's playing - if James sucked so bad at guitar why would a band as big as A Perfect Circle hire him? Here's hoping SP end up supporting APC on their next tour....

I love the original pumpkins but it's just a fact that it was mainly billy who created what their magic was about. by writing the songs, by playing the guitar like he does, by lending his very strange beautiful voice. anyway, I agree that he was at his best in the "good old times", you peak only once.
No. It IS Billy's band. Just the same way NIN is Trent's band, Queen's of the Stone Age is Josh Homme's band and Nightwish is Toumas' band. Billy wrote 98% of the music and lyircs and even the contributions Jame's made were small.
Granted Billy's egotistical, but that's not what this is about. SP has and always will be Corgan's brainchild. SP is about a style, not about Billy, but at the same time, he has the creative control because it's his.

The pumpkins suck now, Billy is done, he doesn't make good music anymore. Jame Iha is doing decent things with the band Tinted Windows. Its a fun little pop band with some the drummer from cheap trick, a guy from Fountains of Wayne and one the Hansens of all people.
The new Smashing Pumpkins lineup is great. If you don't like the new band then you're not a Smashing Pumpkins fan, you're a James and Darcy fan. Billy wrote all of the lyrics, and most of music he recorded most of the music with just him and Jimmy, Darcy and James didn't do anything for the band just take, take, and, take.
The new Smashing Pumpkins should be called the Billy Corgan Band. James and Darcy didn't want in because Billy is an egotistical control freak asshole. Why would Darcy want to join a band with someone who called her a crackhead anyways? Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin split because Jimmy Chamberlin wanted his own band. I respect them all but Darcy was given a two years to either go to rehab or be thrown out, so it was her choice. James always thought he was far more than he was, the only songs I skip on Melancholy are the ones James made. I liked his solo album thought and hope he make another album. The Jimmy Camberlin Complex, and T.H.I.S are really good. I paid top dollar for The Jimmy Camberlin Complex, tickets.

I really like Jeff Schroeder , and I had a crush on Ginger Pooley but I was 17 and she was beautiful. Mike Bryan is another Jimmy Chamberlin in the making I can't wait until we get to hear his full power on As Rome Burns.
@nicholsjoshua15 man Mike is incredible, I saw them twice last month and he really showed up, I didn't know what to expect. The rest of the band stepped aside and let him solo and it was AWESOME. I loved Ginger too, my bass guitar's name is Ginger but I grew up idolizing D'Arcy, I guess I'm a bit older than you- and I can't say it was a crush lol, I'm a woman :) Jeff threw me a pick at the last show I went to, man he was playing a lot of the lead parts he rocks!

@birdy47 Actually, to be more precise, James CO-wrote soma on SD. You have to admit there's a big difference of being the main writer of a song and HELPING to write a song. James wrote song like blew away, take me down, bugg superstar, go, summer, and the bells. I miss the original members too but to say that some of the songs on SD are Iha compositions is going a bit far.

reunion is a bad description, reboot is a better word. SP has always been centered round billy, but iha and darcy and jimmy have all contributed and created what the band was. billy just switched out his old members for new ones to create new types of music

To be honest I really don't give a fuck about Iha or Darcy anymore. I did at one point but after a while I just started to realize the Smashing pumpkins are still making great music and if Iha and Darcy don't want to be a part of it, than I don't care. No one made them leave, they left themselves. And I don't think Billy was being a controlling prick with his head up his ass. There's two sides to every story and, to me, Billy has more credibility than both Darcy and Iha.

Interesting debate here. Here's the deal. I've seen SP live a half dozen or so times, and although they sound good they weren't always the tightest band, and it was never because of Billy or Jimmy. Yes Iha, had contributions but Gish was practically recorded by Billy by himself anyway. The only reason the new band may not be as good live to you is because of the nostalgia of wanting to see the OG members. But SP's talent lies with Billy and Jimmy..PERIOD!

Corgan knows it.. with he's failed band SWAN.. which was a lame attempt by corgan! James and D'arcy probably hates Corgan's gutts! This new band will still suck even with the mind of corgan!

That's not a reunion, its 2 original band members bleeding money off of their fans. Noone wants to see a 2nd rate substitute of the Smashing Pumkins that rocked the 90's so hard it left the audience in a trance at their shows. Corgan and Chaimberlin signed up for the tour purely because their cash dried up. They need cash for drugs. Has anyone seen how skinny they both are now? Billy Corgan now makes Mary Kate Olsen look over weight.

I am a fan of Smashing Pumpkins but I don't blame D'arcy and James for leaving. I don't think I could stand being in the same room with Billy Corgan for more than 5 minutes. It's no wonder Jimmy left. I love the fact too that Billy Corgan keeps getting female bassists: D'arcy, Melissa, Ginger, and now Nicole. He might as well put a blow-up doll on bass for his next tour.

I get the feeling that Corgan is too well off and too self absorbed. Ive seen his latest stuff. He's doing brilliant stuuff but he's up his own butt too much. I think Iha and Darcy were real friends to him and kept him real and honest while he was working through issues (which gave power to his music) that he doesnt really deal with anymore.

Corgan is the Smashign Pumpkins. Lets not kid ourselves. He wrote every single song, and even recorded the bass lines on Siamese Dream. Corgan is the Smashign Pumpkins. Iha and Darcy, while charismatic and beautiful, are replacable. Chamberlain is not replacable though, thats why Billy kept him for the Pumpkins. He truly is a premier drummer.

Their best music was made with the original 4.

actually, most of the best songs came from both Billy and Iha cowriting togethor, of course this is only opinion, but i also find that without the original band there, SP is pretty much no more, with none up there on stage other than Corgan, it's pretty much a Corgan solo album with guest artist... I wouldnt really mind if Dracy was the only one left out, but Iha was definitely a big influence, and Chamberline was a drum beast.. anyways, opinions, and that's mine...

you people are forgetting that being in a band sometimes your role has less to do with musicianship and who writes more songs but rather who is keeping things light and who is keeping things positive and who is grounded while fame and fortune comes in to play. a voice of reason or a sense of humor can have as much impact as anything when keeping a band together.

@rodge2001 well truth is, the Smashing Pumpkins is Billy Corgan. ok Billy and Iha started the band together, but it is known that Billy recorded the drum and bass parts for many songs since Siamese Dream 'cause the other guys were just fucked up and didn't give a shit about it all so I wouldn't call James and D'Arcy "necessary". I don't even think D'Arcy ever wrote a single riff.
@DeZpisE i agree the pumpkins can't exist without billy. but it seems no one wants to work with him. he's constantly hiring new members. a lot of fans don't like the direction the band took after the original lineup changed. the original band worked. maybe not internaly but certainly from the outside. he's trying to recreate what worked before. what we have here is billy corgan's solo band. for better or worse.

Everything that comes out now people are already shitting on it because it doesn't sound like Siamese dream or Mellon Collie... ect... I think Billy's still got it in him, so far in my opinion, the stuff off of Teargarden is wayyy better than Zeitgeist album.
I think that everyone had their place in the band, but that some, i.e. Billy and Jimmy, had more weight in the songwriting process/creativity. The way I see it, James and D'arcy were touring musicians to essentially play the songs that Billy wrote. I think we can all agree that things like the lyrics, songwriting, and of course Billy's voice, made the band as famous as it was/is.
I'm not saying that James and D'arcy weren't good musicians, I'm just saying that they weren't as important.
I think those three quotes about sum up the importance of Iha being in the band. To translate, not very. I'm not hating on him, but come one we all know Billy and Jimmy are the heart and soul of the band.
i think that billy corgan is awesome, i truly do, but i dont think that he is that nice. while they were in germany playing geek usa, he wasnt that friendly to them! (though he makes awesome music!!!)
Quite. And it might not have happened had Corgan stuck to his guns, but he was too busy bitching about Britney Spears and fans not buying his records to notice. He retrospectively acknowledged all this in the blog he put out a few years ago before he tried to reform the band.
I almost agree, but I actually think many fans overlook Adore because of the drum machine, but there is some great songwriting on that album...love it.
Machina isn't a bad album, but it's defiently not their best. Its far too long and drags towards the end. The production is a nightmare, its way too glossy and ruins the impact of some of the songs. Adore however is underrated and deserved better. In my opinion they'll never top Mellon Collie.
Melancholy?! How do you overlook Siamese Dream as one of the best rock albums to come out of the 90's...Melancholy is great, but definitely the inferior of the two.
Yeah Siamese Dream is a classic, but what I was saying was Mellon Collie is a classic too and since that album they haven't brought out a truly awesome album since though they came close with Adore. I could never overlook Siamese Dream :P

It was the stuff that was more James influenced that really caught my attention. And when his solo album came out, I almost forgot about my SP albums.
He also wrote Take-Me-Down, that finished off Mellon Collie. As was Believe, and Go and also Farewell and Goodnight he co-wrote with Billy which also co-finished off Mellon Collie.
So, James Iha was a rather influential player and frankly, I am very sad he turned his back on the Pumpkins. I especially like his voice, hence why I've got his solo album and everything else he's done to date.
Hell, I'd be content if he'd just rejoin A Perfect Circle but no...I'm still happy Billy's not done. :)

She's so *normal*. There's nothing special about her, she just looks like some random chick from the local highschool. Zeitgeist sucked, but that's not her fault, that's no one's fault.
There's no anger and sadness anymore, and that's what made me Pumpkins so great.
Oh I know why they didn't come back it's all to do with royalties and law suits with virgin (probably coupled with Billy being a control freak). Makes sense now. Not that it matters, Billy has driven Jimmy out of the band its not the same. I do still think that once the dust has settled then everybody will come back.
Jimmy is so, so missed in that band. An incredible and unique drummer. Gave up on them after Billy 'fired' Jimmy,.a truly bizarre affair.

I love the Pumpkins (even some of Billy's new songs ;-) ) but every time I hear these guys speak I think what assholes. "Put out the feelers" my ass. Iha and D'Arcy were supposed to buy the newspaper on that day, was it? Corgan particularly is so far up his own ass his feet come out of his mouth. I hate it when he badmouths James's playing - if James sucked so bad at guitar why would a band as big as A Perfect Circle hire him? Here's hoping SP end up supporting APC on their next tour....

I love the original pumpkins but it's just a fact that it was mainly billy who created what their magic was about. by writing the songs, by playing the guitar like he does, by lending his very strange beautiful voice. anyway, I agree that he was at his best in the "good old times", you peak only once.

No. It IS Billy's band. Just the same way NIN is Trent's band, Queen's of the Stone Age is Josh Homme's band and Nightwish is Toumas' band. Billy wrote 98% of the music and lyircs and even the contributions Jame's made were small.
Granted Billy's egotistical, but that's not what this is about. SP has and always will be Corgan's brainchild. SP is about a style, not about Billy, but at the same time, he has the creative control because it's his.

The pumpkins suck now, Billy is done, he doesn't make good music anymore. Jame Iha is doing decent things with the band Tinted Windows. Its a fun little pop band with some the drummer from cheap trick, a guy from Fountains of Wayne and one the Hansens of all people.

The new Smashing Pumpkins lineup is great. If you don't like the new band then you're not a Smashing Pumpkins fan, you're a James and Darcy fan. Billy wrote all of the lyrics, and most of music he recorded most of the music with just him and Jimmy, Darcy and James didn't do anything for the band just take, take, and, take.

Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin split because Jimmy Chamberlin wanted his own band. I respect them all but Darcy was given a two years to either go to rehab or be thrown out, so it was her choice. James always thought he was far more than he was, the only songs I skip on Melancholy are the ones James made. I liked his solo album thought and hope he make another album. The Jimmy Camberlin Complex, and T.H.I.S are really good. I paid top dollar for The Jimmy Camberlin Complex, tickets.

I really like Jeff Schroeder , and I had a crush on Ginger Pooley but I was 17 and she was beautiful. I loved Ginger too, my bass guitar's name is Ginger but I grew up idolizing D'Arcy, I guess I'm a bit older than you- and I can't say it was a crush lol, I'm a woman :) Jeff threw me a pick at the last show I went to, man he was playing a lot of the lead parts he rocks!

To be honest I really don't give a fuck about Iha or Darcy anymore. I did at one point but after a while I just started to realize the Smashing pumpkins are still making great music and if Iha and Darcy don't want to be a part of it, than I don't care. No one made them leave, they left themselves. And I don't think Billy was being a controlling prick with his head up his ass. There's two sides to every story and, to me, Billy has more credibility than both Darcy and Iha.

Interesting debate here. Here's the deal. I've seen SP live a half dozen or so times, and although they sound good they weren't always the tightest band, and it was never because of Billy or Jimmy. Yes Iha, had contributions but Gish was practically recorded by Billy by himself anyway. The only reason the new band may not be as good live to you is because of the nostalgia of wanting to see the OG members. But SP's talent lies with Billy and Jimmy..PERIOD!

That's not a reunion, its 2 original band members bleeding money off of their fans. Noone wants to see a 2nd rate substitute of the Smashing Pumkins that rocked the 90's so hard it left the audience in a trance at their shows. Corgan and Chaimberlin signed up for the tour purely because their cash dried up. They need cash for drugs. Has anyone seen how skinny they both are now? I get the feeling that Corgan is too well off and too self absorbed. Ive seen his latest stuff. He's doing brilliant stuuff but he's up his own butt too much. I think Iha and Darcy were real friends to him and kept him real and honest while he was working through issues (which gave power to his music) that he doesnt really deal with anymore.
He's just around yes people and too scared and sensitive to be really challenged.

Iha and Darcy, while charismatic and beautiful, are replacable. Chamberlain is not replacable though, thats why Billy kept him for the Pumpkins. He truly is a premier drummer.

actually, most of the best songs came from both Billy and Iha cowriting togethor, of course this is only opinion, but i also find that without the original band there, SP is pretty much no more, with none up there on stage other than Corgan, it's pretty much a Corgan solo album with guest artist... I wouldnt really mind if Dracy was the only one left out, but Iha was definitely a big influence, and Chamberline was a drum beast.. anyways, opinions, and that's mine...

you people are forgetting that being in a band sometimes your role has less to do with musicianship and who writes more songs but rather who is keeping things light and who is keeping things positive and who is grounded while fame and fortune comes in to play. a voice of reason or a sense of humor can have as much impact as anything when keeping a band together.

@rodge2001 well truth is, the Smashing Pumpkins is Billy Corgan. ok Billy and Iha started the band together, but it is known that Billy recorded the drum and bass parts for many songs since Siamese Dream 'cause the other guys were just fucked up and didn't give a shit about it all so I wouldn't call James and D'Arcy "necessary". I don't even think D'Arcy ever wrote a single riff.

@DeZpisE i agree the pumpkins can't exist without billy. but it seems no one wants to work with him. he's constantly hiring new members. a lot of fans don't like the direction the band took after the original lineup changed. the original band worked. maybe not internaly but certainly from the outside. he's trying to recreate what worked before. what we have here is billy corgan's solo band. for better or worse.

@rodge2001 I totally agree. personally, I don't dislike the new material but wouldn't even think about comparing it to the older stuff! they're definitely not gonna drop another masterpiece like Mellon Collie or Siamese Dream, that's pretty sure :P

Everything that comes out now people are already shitting on it because it doesn't sound like Siamese dream or Mellon Collie... ect... I think Billy's still got it in him, so far in my opinion, the stuff off of Teargarden is wayyy better than Zeitgeist album.

I think that everyone had their place in the band, but that some, i.e. Billy and Jimmy, had more weight in the songwriting process/creativity. The way I see it, James and D'arcy were touring musicians to essentially play the songs that Billy wrote. I think we can all agree that things like the lyrics, songwriting, and of course Billy's voice, made the band as famous as it was/is.
I'm not saying that James and D'arcy weren't good musicians, I'm just saying that they weren't as important.

Quite. And it might not have happened had Corgan stuck to his guns, but he was too busy bitching about Britney Spears and fans not buying his records to notice. He retrospectively acknowledged all this in the blog he put out a few years ago before he tried to reform the band.

Machina isn't a bad album, but it's defiently not their best. Its far too long and drags towards the end. The production is a nightmare, its way too glossy and ruins the impact of some of the songs. Adore however is underrated and deserved better. In my opinion they'll never top Mellon Collie.

Yeah Siamese Dream is a classic, but what I was saying was Mellon Collie is a classic too and since that album they haven't brought out a truly awesome album since though they came close with Adore. I could never overlook Siamese Dream :P

Please. Not that I really care whether some kid thinks I'm not a "true fan"or not but Machina is a terrible mess of an album. It is overproduced and the songwriting is forced. It is album Billy felt duty bound to make to try and appease his fans after he had already fallen off. Anyway, kid I was listening to Pumpkins when you were still learning how to count. If you weren't such a n00b you wouldn't dare refer to Machina as "one of their best albums". You should be ashamed of yourself.

He also wrote Take-Me-Down, that finished off Mellon Collie. As was Believe, and Go and also Farewell and Goodnight he co-wrote with Billy which also co-finished off Mellon Collie.
So, James Iha was a rather influential player and frankly, I am very sad he turned his back on the Pumpkins. I especially like his voice, hence why I've got his solo album and everything else he's done to date.
Hell, I'd be content if he'd just rejoin A Perfect Circle but no...I'm still happy Billy's not done. :)

She's so *normal*. There's nothing special about her, she just looks like some random chick from the local highschool. Zeitgeist sucked, but that's not her fault, that's no one's fault.
There's no anger and sadness anymore, and that's what made me Pumpkins so great.

Oh I know why they didn't come back it's all to do with royalties and law suits with virgin (probably coupled with Billy being a control freak). Makes sense now. Not that it matters, Billy has driven Jimmy out of the band its not the same. I do still think that once the dust has settled then everybody will come back.
