I started buying Tag Heur watches in 1982. I stopped doing so when I went diving in Turks and Caicos in 1991. When I was down at 110 feet ...water got into the mecahinsm of the watch, ruining it. The watch was supposedly rated down to 300Meters. I guess they figured that no one would dive deep to find out and therefore you wont know the difference. Well I found out the hard way and now I only buy SEIKO. I've been on probably 90 or more dives since 91 and NO PROBLEMS with the Seiko.
so let me get this straight, you bought the watch in 1982, and in 1991 it leaked water, if you deep water dive you have to have any watch pressure checked and the seal replaced every few years.
The watch was rated down to 300 meters, as I have stated, thats obviously around 900 feet (933 to be exact). After 9 years of use and ONE dive over 60 feet, it leaked. That's not acceptable from a company which brags about its durability in watch-craft. Furthermore, back in1991 I purchased a SEIKO , it's rated down to "only" 100 meters , yet it has withstood 9 dives since 1991 which I have gone over 100 feet. It's obvious (to me anyway) which company makes the more durable watches.
BTW, I have never heard all these years that I am diving, that the seal needs to be checked on the watches (they are guaranteed not to leak as well ......LIFETIME AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT DIVE OVER THE WATCHES RATED LIMIT, which i don't plan on doing and have never DONE). I am not doing U.S. navy demolition dives in the indian ocean or the mariana trench. I'm doing casual diving in the carribean for the most part and sometimes in the Aegean sea and Med, off of sardinia.
ok if the watch was an automatic movement say a caliber 5, then it should be serviced every 4 to 6 years, if its a quartz when the battery is replaced you should change the seal on a dive watch, call a quality watch store to verify, also on watches with screw down crown it has to be seated[screwed down] to keep water out, sorry to hear you had bad luck on your Tag, sounds like you have some nice water to dive in, near my home the water is not very clear.
I appreciate your commentary. Sorry to sound pissed but back in the day that watch cost be alot of cash at the time, which I had to borrow. Anyway it was nice chatting with you. BTW, yea the waters are really nice where i dive, especially the Aegean areas between Greece and Turkey. Best VIS I have experienced to date.
I use my tag all the time when diving. I replace my o-ring frequently on the watch though. I had a friend who's rolex was ruined because they had not replaced their o-rings since they got the watch.
It;s not the best. It's a bullshit watch that is over priced. It looks good, thats all. If you are a diver, DON'T GET IT. If your natural habitat is a cocktail bar, then the tag heur is good enough.
Yes, you are correct. My dad has the calibre, and i Have the Indy Formula 1 chrono. There is hard baked lettering on the ringon mine, and i went in my friends salt water pool at his vacation home, and the fine salt particles took it off. I am going to get it fixed when i need to change the battery. :(
Plastic, metal, pvc, glass, dylithium crystal, who give a fuck if the watch is going to leak water down at 110 feet if its rated at 300 meters. Thats what happened to me. Tag is an over-hyped , over-priced peice of EURO TRASH. I only buy SEIKO from now on. Its a MANS WATCH!
That some beautiful graphics. I can only imagine the wear on those balance pivots w/so many vibrations. Does anyone know if it is a special material? Is the oil something other than Moebius? Very impressive.
I never really liked Tag because their cheap stuff is very cheap--Plastic bezels, painted numbers, cheap ETA quartz movements.
people think bezel is plastic coz its black but its steal with PVD treatment. ETA movement is the standard swiss quartz movement nothing wrong with it, its just cheap to manufacture to be fair its very good and more reliable than japanesse movts and swiss automatic. Even jacob&co watches use swiss quartz ETA and charge $9K for a stainless steel ETA quartz watch with no diamonds or precious metals just stainless steel and leather strap. TAG is a top tier watch company.
I Just bought one !!!!!

I think he meant PVD, physical vapor deposition. This coating, although quite durable, can still wear off.
