The footage was not taken sitting in a car across the road. Fortunately, Shepparton Council does not share your disregard for the obvious heat stress suffered by the calves. The Council has made a commitment to erect cover over the yards by the end of the year.
It was not the paddle that was the problem. In fact, the paddle was a vast improvement on the indiscriminate use of the electric prod on calves filmed in Victoria in late 2007 (see 'Journey of the bobby calves' parts 1 & 2). The problem was heat stress. Bobby calves are less than a week old and do not cope with sitting in the sun for hours in 36 degrees waiting for the truck to take them to the abattoir to await slaughter the following day.
What makes you think I haven't worked with transport of animals? Have you? If so, can I suggest you have a look at the work of Temple Grandin. She is acknowledged as world expert in moving stock and her methods are very good. PS/ I don't like the sound of you either
. seriously who ever posted this video, you need to get your facts right before you start videoing people doing their jobs with out their concent if you were smart you would know that you can get in alot of trouble for that.
i lived in shepparton as a farmer and i have expierenced this first hand. first of all that paddle dose not hurt! if you were smart you would know that. the paddle is made to make a big sound in order to get the calves to move along. second of all calves are pretty bloody hard to load, so obviously farmers have to push them on ok what the hell are they sposed to do?
georgiacormack, you couldn't tell these calves were suffering from the heat? Did you watch the same video as I did? Someone has to uncover these things because obviously there alot of people who are ignorant to animal suffering; it needs to be brought to light.
Hooray! That's great news! Hopefully they go up SOON though. It's wonderful to see small victories in the fight against animal suffering...I was almost losing hope. Thank- you for giving me hope back.
Poor, poor babies! What happened with the cruelty complaint, I mean there is video evidence right? How long does this kind of thing have to go on (and all over the world) before the majority of humanity evolves enough, ethically speaking, to end it once and for all. Sadly, I don't see much hope....
Thanks for your comment. The management of the saleyard had an excuse for why these calves were left in the heat for so long. For each complaint we make there is always an excuse. The problem is, when you add all the individual excuses together you see the disturbing reality. Bobby calves are not fit to go through the saleyard system. They are too young to cope.
This is so cruel .. and no one will ever change anything! This will go on and on ... and knowing that makes me so mad ...
