I know movies won't be movies if there is no swearing, but why is there lots of swearing in this war movie. This is mainly a serious movie without a happy tone. I thought swearing only works in comedy.
@Fanofcartoons1994 Are you serious? This movie is based on Stone's experiences during the war. They obviously swore a lot. That's the reality whether you like it or not.
@McTatarka To be honest with you, yes. If there is excessive swearing (100 or more f-words) in the movie, it becomes a point where the "swears-a-lots" movie become a black comedy. I just know that the swearing is added in for drama. But to me, it sounds laughable than dramatic. In terms of TV Tropes, I would call this a Narm.
In the commentary, Oliver Stone (who was a grenadier in the Vietnam War, his issued weapon an M-79) mentions that Barnes wasn't necessarily evil. He was driven mad by war. When his eyes glow red, Stone says, it's "the war in his eyes." If you think about it, that's necessary for survival in those circumstances. Barnes also shows regret when his men die and he tries to keep them alive. He gets pissed off because he knows what kind of stakes they're dealing with. He's a crusader like Elias.

@DiveBum18 War is my passion, I constantly dream about warfare. I'd be a great general, I know it! Although I doubt i'll be ever able to prove that! My dads 30 years in the tier one Army! My family were in the SS in WW2. It's not the horrible part of war I like, it's the tactical part. It's very honourable to die in battle! All my books are of the German WW2 generals. It's all I dream about constantly. I'm not some kid playing too much videogames. I sleep with a 12 guage incase some paedo comes!
@FieldMarshalRommel23 i understand you like that tactical part of warfare. However, you come off as thinking battle is cool. Idk if you will join the military or not, but i guaruntee if you do, once you take someones life who has kids, and a wife....you won't be sayin in your head "wow, that was cool."
This movie is unintentional comedy gold. How anyone can like this film, other then to laugh at the bad acting, dialouge, and most obvious plot in war film history...is beyond me.
Movie Fact: 0:48 When O'Neill gives Barnes a light and doesn't work he improvises and acts casual. It was not scripted. Little things like that are what make this movie so great.
@italoirish888 You're telling me! I'm a cadet, and don't get me wrong, I love NCOs and respect their knowledge, but as a new 2LT, I have no idea how I'm supposed to deal with them.
@wasabi622 You don't need to know as much as them. That comes with experience. Lean on them for their knowledge but you are the ultimate deciding authority. Take their input and make the best decision you can. But it's your decision to make and they can't feel like there's any confusion about that. The Lieutenant in this movie wasn't stupid. He was just inexperienced and cowardly.
This war was FUBAR from the start. Prosecuted in the beginning as a "police action." The US handicapped by its own Congress. Troops going into battle with a weapon (M-16) different from what they trained with (M-14). Eugene Stoner's original Armalite design had been jacked around with, resulting in a sub-par standard-issue rifle. The M-72 LAW had been designed to be disposable. Empty rockets tubes were collected by Charlie and converted into booby traps (usually filled with grenades).
@IggyHazard Or simply thinking that a war of attrition would be a winning strategy. Joe Galloway (We Were Soldiers) once asked Gen. Giap that he had sent over 1,000,000 North Vietnamese Soldiers to their death. Giap said that he would have gladly sent 5,000,000 if it would drive out the foreigner.
@IggyHazard This is pretty much what every war since WWII has been about. Selling weapons to an unwitting American public and creating enemies to ensure repeat patronage.
@GETURPOPCRNRDY1 Selling weapons to the American public? You mean military grade weapons? Shyah! As if! An American citizen has to register full-auto weapons with the BATFE (which is unconstitutional).
@GETURPOPCRNRDY1 Oh, I see what you mean. I don't mind my taxes paying for worthwhile stuff like that. I just figure, since it is our money (as in we, The People), then we should have access to the same weapons the government has since they owe their very existence to us, The People.
platoon is the best vietnam war movie........i hate that fucking movie hamburger hill, they made the VC so fucking dumb like they just run right up to the americans and get shot point blank
Elias was always my favorite character- I imagine that he was what most soldiers in 'Nam were really like: Compassionate, firm, loyal, caring to the troops under his command, but at the same time weary of that terrible war.
The My Lai Massacre was the mass murder conducted by a unit of the U.S. Army on March 16, 1968 of 347–504 unarmed citizens in South Vietnam, all of whom were civilians and a majority of whom were women, children (including babies) and elderly people.

look leastinthekindom1, oliver stone served in vietnam and basically made a movie of the overview of the life and standards he saw in the war while serving as an infantryman. i respect his service for the country and many of his noble views.
I've served 22 years in the Army (from the time I was 17). I used to really like this movie but I have drifted away from it. It really is typical Oliver Stone....an exaggeration. Were there people like Barnes...sure...but even in a war as atypical as Vietnam he was the extreme exception and not the rule. I suggest you watch the movie Gardens of Stone. Tells about the Vietnam War and its affect on the homefront as well as soldiers who served there and were getting ready to go there...awesome..
More atroceties commited, the more you fuel the resistance.
Those Animals responsible for Guantanamo, Abhu Ghuraib, Haditha, Bhagram etc. Have indirectly fueled the Resistance in Iraq and Afghanistan completley.
barnes is by far the most interesting character in this film.i always find myself psycho-analysing him.was he always a monster? what kind of guy was he as a civvy? on one hand hes an apparent psychopath but then is noticed by chris with the thousand yard stare and plaintively smoking.he snapped way before this film was set i reckon.maybe after the first tour he came back home discovered the affair, emptied his broken heart of love and merrily jumped back in the ring for the final bout.praps.
Thomas Barnes is from the Hills of Tennessee(they say this in the movie's deleted scenes) but during his first tour in War Zone C, his unit was ambushed by the VC and killed within minutes. Barnes survives, but while the VC are checking the dead for souvinirs and such, one of them sees he's still alive. Still trying to play dead, he allows the VC to put a bullet in his face, hence that nasty ass scar running down his face. Ill finish it up in the next message.
@chowthe1st Yeah, in a documentary. Stone based Barnes' character on an NCO who totally went native. He had an Asian (I think Japanese) wife. There was a time where the NCO stopped the platoon, got the pointman and a few others, crept up a ways and found a group of VC around a campfire. There was no way to see or hear them from where the platoon was. So how did he find them? Stone said, "He could smell them."
it only dawned on me the other day that oneill is dr cox from scrubs. I was watching it and i suddenly thought hang on thats dr cox. funny how you dont notice these things straight away.
You're a fascists Neo-Conservative douche bag. I voted for Ron Paul (R) you retarded schmuck. It's a good thing you're Anti-Intellectualism is becoming extinct.
To some extent I agree. We had good intentions when we first went over there, but it just got all fucked up later. Thats what happens when you let politicians do the fighting instead of the generals. But for the war, or any war for that matter, or against it, you have to respect the men fighting.
Asshole or not...Barnes was a bad mofo...and an American Patriot, shot 7 times, scars decorating his face, he saw the big picture, but took it too far...you dont have to like the man, but you gotta at least respect his service
That was awesome. Even though Barnes is a monster, he did the fair thing.
He let the soldiers about to finish their tours stay in camp and made the green soldiers do the ambush, but he made the coward O'Neil go out with them. That's justice.
One of the biggest flaws in the military heiarchy is that a young inexperience person has rank over people that have loads of experience. Just cause your a LT doesn;t mean you should be ordering experienced seargants. In the infantry LTs are useless.
i like the smoking weed den at the base. some of that jefferson airplane music and smoky robinson. thats the good shit right there. i also like it when he took a toke out of the shotgun barrel. CLASSIC!!!
I would say the first casualty of war is truth, not innocence. Innocence, that's something some never had.Unbelieveable the lies and deception the powers-that-be told about a people who didn't deserve to be saved.Pathetic chapter in U.S. history.
some people put stupid and pointless comments like "best vietnam movie evermade" and get thumbs up and you put an intelligent comment and get thumbs downed hahaha
In today's world, we are surrounded by the incurably ignorant.
That's my only explanation for not only the outcome of the election of 2008, but also for the two poor choices we had to select from. Thanks for the support.

look leastinthekindom1, oliver stone served in vietnam and basically made a movie of the overview of the life and standards he saw in the war while serving as an infantryman. i respect his service for the country and many of his noble views.

Tells about the Vietnam War and its affect on the homefront as well as soldiers who served there and were getting ready to go there...awesome..

surprising how many people would choose barnes over elias.
you'd think after watching the entire thing, more people would side with elias. =/

Read the novelization by Dale Dye. It really goes into Barnes' mind and explains why he's such an animal. If you want, I'll explain.

cheers i'll check it out.

Can you please explain what goes on in Barnes' head in the book????
WhtMike2006 2 years ago
Thomas Barnes is from the Hills of Tennessee(they say this in the movie's deleted scenes) but during his first tour in War Zone C, his unit was ambushed by the VC and killed within minutes. Barnes survives, but while the VC are checking the dead for souvinirs and such, one of them sees he's still alive. Still trying to play dead, he allows the VC to put a bullet in his face, hence that nasty ass scar running down his face. Ill finish it up in the next message.
marvelmax03191 2 years ago 4
@chowthe1st Yeah, in a documentary. Stone based Barnes' character on an NCO who totally went native. He had an Asian (I think Japanese) wife. There was a time where the NCO stopped the platoon, got the pointman and a few others, crept up a ways and found a group of VC around a campfire. There was no way to see or hear them from where the platoon was. So how did he find them? Stone said, "He could smell them."

QuelDr0ma 2 years ago 2
To some extent I agree. We had good intentions when we first went over there, but it just got all fucked up later. Thats what happens when you let politicians do the fighting instead of the generals. But for the war, or any war for that matter, or against it, you have to respect the men fighting.
marvelmax03191 2 years ago
most of the men. there are always a few bad apples in a bunch.

Asshole or not...Barnes was a bad mofo...and an American Patriot, shot 7 times, scars decorating his face, he saw the big picture, but took it too far...you dont have to like the man, but you gotta at least respect his service

The cigarette lighting sequence, is it a blooper?
darkartsviper 2 years ago 3
Yes it is,it is on the bonus scenes. They decided to keep rolling and took the 1st take over the 2nd.I personally think its a classic O'neil move.

This movie opened my eyes. It really shows that war IS hell, and that it makes people monsters. One of my favourite movies ever.
valtttu 2 years ago 4
That was awesome. Even though Barnes is a monster, he did the fair thing.
He let the soldiers about to finish their tours stay in camp and made the green soldiers do the ambush, but he made the coward O'Neil go out with them. That's justice.

One of the biggest flaws in the military heiarchy is that a young inexperience person has rank over people that have loads of experience. Just cause your a LT doesn;t mean you should be ordering experienced seargants. In the infantry LTs are useless.

I would say the first casualty of war is truth, not innocence. Innocence, that's something some never had.Unbelieveable the lies and deception the powers-that-be told about a people who didn't deserve to be saved.Pathetic chapter in U.S. history.

It's ok.
In today's world, we are surrounded by the incurably ignorant.
That's my only explanation for not only the outcome of the election of 2008, but also for the two poor choices we had to select from. Thanks for the support.
