Metric did a surprise free, open air (in the middle of the downtown street, right after rush hour) a couple of years ago, in Toronto. I think the sponsoring radio station started giving hints the day before of something coming. Their final hint, a few hours before the start was: "no specific on the band yet; could be the Beatles, or could be the Rolling Stones". Metric fans started heading down right then.
