He was damn good though as evidenced by his ability to KO some people who had never even been down before (Holmes, Thomas etc) Put simply his mind let him down a few times ie/ when a quality fighter fights back (Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis etc) although Ruddock didn't manage this feat despite his best efforts. Tyson should be classed as a great but not the greatest.

It's a shame Iron Mike was taken advantage of by his management staff (especially Don King). Had he been surrounded by people who truly cared about him and wanted to give him guidance rather than by people who wanted to exploit him for money, maybe his career would've turned out differently.

Conversely, you have wrestling powerhouse brock lesnar turtle up like a common reptile whenever he gets hit hard. All fighters transition to mma differently, and there hasn't been anyone as good at another combat discipline as tyson to boxing. The one exception is maybe daniel cormier with wrestling.

@tfrenn Overeem got the k-1 title, so he's a beast. Since the dawn of his career he's been pretty well rounded though, with the possible exception of wrestling. Badr Hari is great muay thai. Boxing now is kind of a mess, so I think k-1 is a more comprehensive measure of elite striking unless you have a boxing "title".

@armbarsandbarchords If a pure boxer fights mma they lose, that hasn't changed since ufc 1. I though we were discussing crossover from a particular discipline to mma. In that case, Toney isn't really a crossover, since he never really trained mma. Cormier is a crossover, since was an olympic and RealPro wrestler and is great in mma. If Tyson Trained MMA, who knows?

I really dont think Ali would have been able to take one of those punches to the head. Ali was probably a better boxer, but he wasnt going to stop Tyson's power. Ali would have got hit, gotten hit HARD, and gone down just like everyone else.

Not the best ever but a great fighter... In his prime he knocked alot of bums and when he fought someone clever, even in his prime, they gave him problems. Larry Holmes, Mitch Green, Tony Tucker. He was one dimensional if plan A didn't work (his power) he didn't have a plan B. Brains out trump strengh every time. Then people talk about jail, wasnt the same after, niether was Ali when he got out. But still beat some greats. A prime Ali, Foreman, Robinson, Marciano Depsey would have killed Tyson.

I really dont think Ali would have been able to take one of those punches to the head. Ali was probably a better boxer, but he wasnt going to stop Tyson's power. Ali would have got hit, gotten hit HARD, and gone down just like everyone else.

Tyson was such an angry boxer, he needed to control his anger which is very important in boxing. If you lose control you lose, a smart boxer like Ali would make Tyson really pissed, make him lose control, and knock Tyson the fuck out.
