I think these comparisons are ridiculous on smartphones. Who the hell needs epic viewing angles for a phone? You don't hold your phone like shown in the video and saying "Snap, I can't see anything from this angle!"

Viewing angle is important for static devices like TVs , PC Monitors etc. but like this, the only thing a wider viewing angle does is providing everyone information about what I am doing with my phone

@ptuku Yep, thats true for SAMOLED. I didn't want to say SAMOLED itself was useless (as it is pretty awesome regarding battery life and the possibilty to make VERY VERY slim phones while the display itself can not break) but rather this talk about viewing angles :)

I still think LCD is better. The colors will age more evenly. On amoled some colors will fade before others over time. At least that's what i've heard. Also LCD is sharper and colours are more natural.

sometimes they make the blue tint heavier and with age the colours appear more natural

sometimes they just leave well enough alone and let you set your own colour saturation levels!

these use less power!

dont become nervous! thought i made the wrong choice in buying an desire hd with slcd. watchrd some vids an read comparisons and thought i should better have ordered an old desire with amoled. bullshit! today my desire hd arrived and its fantastic... all in all and also the slcd display. clear bright an crispy! black doesnt look so grey as in vids! make a good choice- buy an htc desire hd!!! ipho...what? ;)

@djrealmusic Das steht im Spezifikationsblatt, welches in der erpackung sein sollte. Wenn dort AMOLED steht, ist es AMOLED, steht dort Touchscreen, ist es SLCD.

I've had my Desire for about 4-5 months now, today i recieved a brand new one for my boss. I noticed that the screen was better on the new one. His model came with the newest 2.2 and updates right away, so i figuere it must be a new build. Mine shipped with 2.1. How can i determine what version screen they are running? I only tested them indoors, the new version has much brighter whites at the same brightness setting, and text was much sharper without any pixelation.

Amoled use up to 330% more battery on pure white screen with full brighness. so battery economy is not better on amoled when browsing ebooks and internet++ I don't want larger viewing angle than good lcd have. It is nice to have some privacy. and the colors of amoled is oversaturated calibrated to keep battery economy. looks bad for a tv calibration expert. black levels is impressive on amoled.

Desires amoled screen doesent really have 800x480 resolution. It has a pentile screen, every pixel can't viewe every colour. The new slcd screen has real 800x480 resolution, i prefer that. Search for "htc desire pentile" and you will see what i mean. The experienced resolution on desire amoled i almost as low as the htc legend

AMOLED screens might look better from an angle, but you generally don't look at your own screen at an odd angle, so I can't see that is much consideration. Super LCD might be better in that your nosey neighbour on the train wont be able to see your screen too well - bonus!

This is where you're wrong, you see the AMOLED actually displays the colours more correctly. The problem is that the people who create all the visual content are working with LCD Desktop screens. (Guess what, OLED isn't affordable yet in large screens!)

So they crank up the saturation till it looks good on normal LCD's, which are way too high saturation levels for OLED screens...

The difference...

OLED is an emissive tech and so don't have viewing angle problems.

For the same reason, OLED don't need a global backlight and so can put a single pixel to off (pure black).

But IPS LCDs can be very good.

I'm writing with a 23 inch E-IPS monitor and it not cost a $1.000.000... ;-)

So SLCD is better in sunlight and has more 'realistic' colors, and AMOLED has a more saturated screen and is worse in sunlight. Personally unless you owned an SLCD and an AMOLED version of the Desire it wouldn't matter which one you got.
