You know someone one day needs to make a video of all these awsome ships from these legendary sagas fight either their nowaday Sci-Fi channel rip offs, or fight some of their video game counter parts. Imagine Enterprise, and a shit load of Star Destroyers, and some BSG ships fighting up against the Reaper Fleet from the Mass Effect series.
@Poodlepups Thank you captain Obvious. The 1080p option is useless, because the all clips have different resolutions, so using a 1080p here is pointless.
Until we learn to work together and put all that crappy selfishness away we will never see all this excitng adventure happen. Hopefully we will never wage war aming ourselves at least.
@hammer326 Yeah your right about that, but the best thing bout it is, we like stuff like this - we get to learn certain things too! These sorts of things help boost our creativity by some odd percent!
The reason we hav'nt been invaded yet is because the aliens don't have sci-fi and think we're actually more advanced than star wars. "planet-destroying battle stations were low tech for these guys?! F this, they can have that one planet!"
@GamesTSF It's a scene from babylon 5. The small, x-wing like fighters are starfurys, the bigger ship is a whitestar. But it's only the shape of the wings, that makes them look like x-wings. Everything else on those fighters looks totally different.
@Neawoulf Here is a little interesting piece of trivia about the Starfury back them Nasa Helped out with the design of the Starfury and asked the Creators of Babylon 5 for it's use in demonstrating real space physics not the two dimensional maneuverability of previous series and movies. Just finding that out makes me want to watch and like Babylon 5 even more than Star Wars. besides Starfury has the best star fighter design when compared to any other fighter from any other series.
@Neawoulf Another interesting piece of trivia is that NASA and military advisers helped the special effect artists make the space battles in Babylon 5 feel more realistic when compared to other series. The Battles are not just two big ships hammering away at each other but which ships go where and go which way for maximum effect which makes battles more interesting. Note the creators of the new series BSG took the same approach in their space battles.
@Idazmi7 You do not believe me about what? the real Space Physic or the military advisers assisting the writers with battle Strategy or Nasa's input with the design of the StarFury? They talk about most of that in the first season set in the episode commentary. and in the making of Babylon 5's Special effects. yes if you do your homework you will find that NASA did help out with a lot of the effects on Babylon 5. and yes they did have Military advisers help out with BSG as well.
@Idazmi7 They actually talk about the design of the starfury and the battle sequences in the commentary and the special features in the DVDs. note I own all of them so i know of what i speak. And yes they did consult NASA about the right angle to launch starfurys at just to make sure that they got everything right.
@Idazmi7 Oh that, he took his inspiration from the Space battles from the epic Carrier Battle from WWII the is where the idea for the bullet spam came from. Back then our carriers and their escorts were covered in AAA Gun Batteries and there were deadly against incoming Aircraft and over ordnance. He simply took the idea of a ship covered in flak Batteries and expanded on that there is nothing wrong with that. Moore originally wanted a more realistic approach to space battles.
@Idazmi7 In space objects and Craft are governed by the Laws of Inertia. So as long you have movement of any kind you can literally flip your figher 180 degrees and maintain the direction of motion (that is where Nasa's advise comes in for B5 and BSG). Therefore the 90 degree jumps and rotations that both vipers and Starfuries perform are extremely possible. In space it is all about Inertia.
@Idazmi7 About real Space tactics since currently there isn't a functional Battlestar or any other star cruiser yet there isn't a basis for space tactics since nobody on our planet has experience with space combat. More to go with the AAA gun batteries on the Galactica in space projectiles do not react the same as they do on earth. so a large Flak Battery is quite realistic because the impact of the projectile or even the shrapnel of said projectile would literally rip star fighters apart.
@Idazmi7 About Star Wars Lucas used the epic Air battles over Europe during WW2 as inspiration for the space combat you can really see it in the Space battles. There is nothing wrong with using war as inspiration for Combat in any sci-fi series or movie. We later on find the flaws in the tactics and physic being used and we adapt from there hence the difference in tactics and physic of Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5 vs star wars. We learn and adjust our reasoning it is part of learning.
@Crusnik2000 "About Star Wars Lucas used the epic Air battles over Europe during WW2 as inspiration for the space combat you can really see it in the Space battles. There is nothing wrong with using war as inspiration for Combat in any sci-fi series or movie."
Okay then. Don't use it as an "our tactic is superior" vs other Sci-Fi.
You people are hilarious. You start lightly bashing someones sci-fi with "better tactic", then when you get called on it, you tell THEM to stop??
@Idazmi7 A correction on the Craft in space are governed by inertia. Craft in space are really governed by mass and Inertia even in a zero friction micro gravity environment mass still has a big time effect on a craft's inertia. Projectile weapons in space are governed by mass and velocity. the more mass a Projectile has and the high the velocity the better. that being said recoil also has an effect on a ship but the mass of the ship and maneuvering thrusters can cancel that out.
@Idazmi7 I concede the recoil point. About your nuke point in the miniseries Galactica did take a nuke and and survived even though in a rather screwed up state. A ship made out if Titanium wouldn't survive a 1 megaton nuke at any level of thickness that part is true. In the series they never mention What metal Galactica is Made of. It has to be a tough unknown metal because that old ship goes through a lot and survives until the end of the series.
@Idazmi7 Good point with the recoil of all of these guns. but i am sure that the colonials found someway to cancel out the recoil that is relatively plausible. And you are right about the titanium ship a ship made out of titanium of reasonable thickness not survive one megaton nuke even in space where there isn't air. A nuke would just have the explosion and radiation against the side of the ship. RD Moore never mentions what metal the Galactica is made out of even in the commentary.
@Idazmi7 But if you think about it it would to be a dense metal that can stop the radiation of a nuke while being more than able to withstand the impact and explosion of the nuke. And in space explosives react differently since there isn't air for the explosion to push on making that explosion not as intense as the same explosion would be on earth. However that being said in space a nuke would still be devastating against even the heaviest armored Hull.
@Idazmi7 "Titanium does not really resist nuclear scale shockwaves" that is a good point on earth where there is an Atmosphere. Since Space is a Vacuum there isn't an Atmosphere there wouldn't be a shock wave since there is relatively nothing for the Nuke to push on all the energy from the nuke would follow the path of least resistance ,ie away from the Ships hull leaving the radiation. It would be a lot like setting off a Stick of Dynamite in a vacuum Chamber.
@Idazmi7 That was an Upper atmosphere nuclear test not in open space that accidentally knocked out the power grid on the eastern seaboard of the US. And the yield was 1.2 mt not 8. The test's objective was to test the effect of setting off a nuke in the upper atmosphere on the surrounding area and it's possible use against the Soviet Union in the time of war. An 8 mt warhead would have caused a much bigger blackout.
@Idazmi7 The reason why the nuke created such large plasma blast was because the energy of the nuke took the path of least resistance, and since space is a vacuum there wasn't anything resisting the nuclear energy a large plasma ball. Anyone who knows about explosives will tell you if there isn't a way for the energy of the blast easily escape the damage of the explosion will be that much more potent it is the same with nukes. you just proved my path of least resistance point.
I was refuting the classic, "Nukes explode like big cherry bombs when in space" argument.
Simply put, I do not think Titanium would last at over 8000 degrees farenheight. If Nuked, Galactica would be impacted by the plasma (which is acting with no resistence), melt from the heat (even in space, as PLASMA is hitting it, not just cold gas), and be rendered totally inoperative due to volume of damage.
@Idazmi7 And that event was also a part of Cold war sabre Rattling Between US and the Soviets, and according to my research a treaty was signed later that year banning high altitude and inner orbit tests nuclear tests and demonstrations.
@Idazmi7 If you watched the miniseries Galactica Survived a Nuclear hit to it flight pod albeit in a roughed up state it took them a while to get the ship under control again. than Later on in the main series She Fell through an Atmosphere and survived in a relatively screwed up state up, then she took a massive pounding in orbit of New Caprica and as still was combat effective until the end of the season 4. My point is that Galactica would survive a Nuke and keep on trucking.
@Crusnik2000 I was making a point about the potential realisim of such a thing: the darned thing is still only titanium. Look at our earliest posts and you will see you diverged from the conversation. I didn't come here to be "schooled". I came to discuss.
@Idazmi7 Sorry about that going that far. The Galactica cannot be made entirely titanium because at heat resistant that titanium is it cannot withstand a sustained pounding Like the she did on the course of the series. I actually talked to a structural engineer about this his expertise is materials especially metals and composites. It is possible that titanium is one of the metals used in the construction maybe the outer armor layer but the inner structural has a different metal.
@Crusnik2000 Obviously. Still, no sci-fi is more science than fiction, even if it's more scientific than other sci-fi shows. By the way: "I have never seen a ship from any other series take that kind of a beating and still be operational let alone Survive"
Voyager, from Star Trek, episode, "Yearof Hell". Voyager had several references to the original Battlestar Galactica series. Thought I'd let you know.
@Idazmi7 The Year of hell one the few good episodes in the Voyager series. In the episode voyager did take a hell of a pounding but only remained partially operational as the ship got more and more beat up they had to evacuate the crew leaving the only the captain on board to run everything from the bridge. As I recall the ship was barely operational at the during the final battle. compared with Galactica which was over 50 years old and able to have a crew during the final battle.
@Crusnik2000 The voyager was fighting in that episode: throuought, and in the final battle, it was tactically operational. And I watch the original Galactica enough to know what it was.
@Idazmi7 yes you are right about Voyager having some references of the original Battlestar. But think about this Battlestar Galactica is about survival of the human race. Voyager is about a lone ship with a crew of 150 trying to find it's way home. And the whole story is about the journey home while the Crew of Galactica is trying to lead the fleet to a new home because the 12 colonies are no longer inhabitable. Yes there are some similarities, but there are also major key differences.
@Idazmi7 I agree with you that titanium is one of the metals used but not the only metal used in the Galactica's construction. being rigid and heat tolerant is one thing but to withstand 4 years of abuse and punishing combat requires a metal or combination of metals or alloys used in the construction. damage tolerance is not all about the armor plating but the how ship is laid out compartment by compartment down to the internal structural beams and cross members.
@Idazmi7 I have never seen a ship from any other series take that kind of a beating and still be operational let alone Survive. Even the Star ship Enterprise 1701-E was disabled after the beating it took in star trek X. Note the enterprise had Shields the Galactica Doesn't. The Galactica's armor took a nuke survived, four years of beatings including falling through the atmosphere at new Caprica and taking a severe pounding afterward and remained operational for the rest if the series.
@Idazmi7 About my so called trolling I was merely addressing your arguments. I also took Physics classes in college so I am quite familiar with inertia and mass and etc, although it is not the main focus of my studies.
@Idazmi7 now hitting the inside of Galactica's fight pod with a nuke would be a very different matter since the is less of a path of Least resistance.
@Idazmi7 Even today our navy ships use AAA guns for close in anti aircraft and missile defense. The Phalanx 6 barreled 20mm cannon fires a barrage against incoming missiles and aircraft. those guns unleash a wall of steel(lead) that literally rips planes and Missiles apart. That is another area where he got the idea of the Bullet spam from, and you and I cannot deny that the bullet spam is something that we do not want to fly in to.
Great job... Forget arguing over what franchise is better, just realize ; You shouldn't fuck with the human race or mess with the bull and you're gonna get the horns...
if there are aliens, no wonder they haven't landed. Nothing gives humans a hard on more than an all out bloodfest shooting killing ultimate destruction war, the higher the body count the better. We are fucking crazy.
@78starbuck Aye, could you imagine. Aliens : Should we land and help advance the humans..? ... After watching BSG, B5, Star Wars, Star Trek and all the rest... Alien: Nahhh... Let's leave them alone...
What was 1:21-1:23? Riddick? I recognized everything else, but that one segment doesn't ring any bells. (Only watched Riddick once, a few years back.)
2:17 to 2:22... I have to thank Valen for Clark not sending Trevor Hall and the EAS Heracles instead of Drake and the EAS Agrippa to take over Babylon 5... :P
I recognised every single franchise clips used in those! There's was Star Trek, Star wars, Firefly, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, StarGate and Independence Day! And I've watched them all! Now I feel like a nerd... Dammit! =3
@sgabrett be proud- you learn more about fictional universes for pleasure and in your spare time than most morons learn about meaningless crap that they're convinced matters in a few decades.
@TonyEvans96 If you think it's stupid, then you definitely didn't watch it. Only judge stuff you know. Even if the western tinge didn't appeal to you, the writing, acting, and story were incredible. Even the CGI was amazing for the time. Unless you hate sci-fi in general, it's impossible not to like at least one aspect of Firefly.
@anomoly26 I liked the Firefly style, but River ruins the whole show. Nothing against the actress, but I cringed literally every time the character was on screen. It could have been so much better if they had left her out or just made her a regular fugitive or something.
@darkdlt1 The scenes that you are wondering about are from Babylon 5 one of the greatest scifi series ever, I would rate it as high as Battlestar Galactica. You should really give it a chance.
what have i been duped into watching?

The Galactica cannot be made entirely titanium because at heat resistant that titanium is it cannot withstand a sustained pounding Like the she did on the course of the series. I actually talked to a structural engineer about this his expertise is materials especially metals and composites. It is possible that titanium is one of the metals used in the construction maybe the outer armor layer but the inner structural has a different metal.
Crusnik2000 1 month ago
@Crusnik2000 Obviously. Still, no sci-fi is more science than fiction, even if it's more scientific than other sci-fi shows. By the way: "I have never seen a ship from any other series take that kind of a beating and still be operational let alone Survive"
Voyager, from Star Trek, episode, "Yearof Hell". Voyager had several references to the original Battlestar Galactica series. Thought I'd let you know.
Idazmi7 1 month ago
@Idazmi7 The Year of hell one the few good episodes in the Voyager series. In the episode voyager did take a hell of a pounding but only remained partially operational as the ship got more and more beat up they had to evacuate the crew leaving the only the captain on board to run everything from the bridge. As I recall the ship was barely operational at the during the final battle. compared with Galactica which was over 50 years old and able to have a crew during the final battle.
Crusnik2000 1 month ago
@Idazmi7 I should have said combat effective because operational is a broad term.
Crusnik2000 1 month ago
@Crusnik2000 The voyager was fighting in that episode: throuought, and in the final battle, it was tactically operational. And I watch the original Galactica enough to know what it was.
Goodbye, now.
Idazmi7 1 month ago
@Idazmi7 That is why I said that operational is a broad term.
Crusnik2000 1 month ago

Crusnik2000 1 month ago

Crusnik2000 1 month ago
@Idazmi7 None the less a nuke would be devastating to a heavily armored Space ship hull, just not as devastating as would be on earth.

@Crusnik2000 In 1962, an 8 magaton NUKE was detonated in outer space.
It knocked out the east seaboard power grid, and generated a plasma blast 40 KILOMETERS in diameter, far bigger than on Earth.
BIGGER. More damaging.
Idazmi7 1 month ago

I'm still waiting for a sci-fi movie that depicts a great battle between aliens and the amish.
Huge contrast there between technology and.... uh faith I guess.
It would be hilarous if the amish would win, and you know they would.

Movies like StarWars not included in that decision...
TonyEvans96 3 months ago
@TonyEvans96 I take it you never watched Firefly?
anomoly26 3 months ago
@anomoly26 Cowboys in space. IMO doesn't get dumber than that.
Besides, only shows that actually LAST long enough to be called a series qualify for ranking.
and that also sorta rules out SGU.
TonyEvans96 3 months ago
@TonyEvans96 If you think it's stupid, then you definitely didn't watch it. Only judge stuff you know. Even if the western tinge didn't appeal to you, the writing, acting, and story were incredible. Even the CGI was amazing for the time. Unless you hate sci-fi in general, it's impossible not to like at least one aspect of Firefly.
anomoly26 3 months ago 2
@anomoly26 I liked the Firefly style, but River ruins the whole show. Nothing against the actress, but I cringed literally every time the character was on screen. It could have been so much better if they had left her out or just made her a regular fugitive or something.
