  • How often to boats have two oars on the same side?

  • @BossLightweight id take free hudsons over paying for empachers

  • soccer= gay(dancing on the field), basketball=acceptable, football or soccer=(if ur crazy), rowing= BEST OF ALL

  • one of the few MACHO sports in the world!!!

  • I love rowing! :) :)

  • 0.1 sec is the difference between been number 8 and number 7 in the world at rowing 2000m.Today I am number 7.

  • if the Germans would have started that sprint 50 meters earlier they would have won.

    Very Impressive Comeback.

  • lol. USA is the only team without an empacher

  • God a 42/spm thats an intense rate to maintain.

  • @8:11 "FUCK ME"

  • I was about to troll this video, saying something about how this is gay, but these guys are fucking beast

  • never rowed..but seems exhausting

  • @dou one of the most exhausting things you can do

  • @ooomblah agreed.

  • Seems like the worst camera work ever lol

  • was that a 2k?

  • @CulinaryOddities all world cup and world champ races are 2k.

  • @srsly101 damn.... 5:47 on a 2k...

  • @srsly101 Once again.... DAMN.

  • YEAH GERMANY! freaking amazing sprint

  • ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH!!!

  • sick finish by the Germans

  • Man, Germany came out of nowhere! What a sprint!

  • "you can see them beginning to breathe..." what the hell? are they even human?

  • thats strange look how low the white boat is sitting in the water at these speeds, why would they design it like that?

  • @rohangiga It's a hudson, all of their boats sit really low in the water like that. I've rowed them in both calm and rough water and it does not feel bad at all in rougher conditions. It just looks weird if you haven't seen it before.

  • Here's where you see that real men pull on wood.

Wait... That came out wrong xD

  • @sydneydragonbades you drop your rate because if you get more run on each stroke, but have less strokes there is less resistance from the wind and it will make your boat go faster. My coach rowed internationally and he always says thats what to do.

  • is it just me or is Steve williams dipping slightly at the catch ?

  • @roosc5765

Only very slightly, he has a more mechanical catch and drive than Andy Hodge - interesting to see different techniques achieving the same result.

  • @seusical0xo that's called a bucket rigg where i row. it's to even out the power in the boat if some people pull harder.it also helps the boat go straight.

  • what kind of boats are some of those...? seats 2 and 3 are both ports on some of them...

  • @seusical0xo you can change the riggers

  • Is it intentional to drop the stroke rate going into a head wind or is it more just that the head wind produces a lower boat speed which then translates to a boat running with a lower stroke rate?

  • @sydneydragonblades the second one. i can't think of any reason that you would want to drop your base pace because of conditions.

  • @bjbjbzz. check again retard. v2 category at scholastic nationals? yeah that's what I thought.

  • @lingman1393 how long was that course? I'm looking at the times and it only looks like it was a 1500 meter course am I right?

  • @substantialiscious12

    It's 2000 m

  • @lingman1393

hahahahahahaha V2 category... good joke. who the fuck cares. you're best guys had a 6:25 erg average, and lost to Central Catholic by open water. They had a 6:45 average. No way in hell you guys are going to win next year.

  • Andy Hodge... great athlete, one of my favourite rowers!

  • @Sigmarian

    @poretobatido

I'm 16 years old and for a 1500m piece I hold a 138.6 split... and it's my first year rowing. Ever heard of New Trier Rowing? National Champs 2010?

  • @lingman1393 I've heard of New Trier, They aren't National Champs.

  • @lingman1393 hahahahahahaha dude I just went to US Rowing Dev camp and rowed with some people from New Trier.. you guys are not going to win next year, thats a joke. You row like sum shit

  • why do the riggers go bow side, stroke side, stroke side, bow side?

  • @m78991234 coz they can go whatever side and order as long as there are 2 stroke and 2 bow side blades.

  • as someone who is fairly new to rowing (2 years) I watch these guys rowing so effortlessly and feel very jealously!

  • never doubt the germans...they are fighters, so powerful. what a fucking finish.

  • Wooden handles are the best!

  • Williams misses a stroke on purpose to keep the boat in the lane. Check out 6:49 where the boat is veering off to Williams' right. Theres only so much a rudder can do at that speed. Maybe he was pulling Reed round....

  • Steve williams absolutely fluffs one at 7:05

  • The germans final sprint is problaly the best ever rowed in the world!!!!!

  • The Germans had a great sprint at the end !

  • amazing race by the brits, great work

  • i have a eton gb row suit. swoped it with a gb u23 coach last year in germany!! lol

  • germany is best^^ my godmothers son was sitting in this boat:)

  • but they lost...

  • 2nd best

  • even worse...

  • not really but.. yeah its pretty bad

  • he dosnt catch a crab, he just misses a stroke.

  • steve williams caught a crab, 7:05

  • technique fecknique

  • what when did he catch a crab? i totally missed it..!!!

  • who caught a crab?

  • That guy Hugh is a shit commentator and a wanker

  • Rofl, you're telling olympic athletes which oars are better? I'm sure they've tried other handles and prefer these.

  • im with u. we used wooden handels. foam 1s are for little school girls here in nz

  • @soadfan1224

    yeah man.. you're right, SIR ... ;)

I'm sure they have reasons enough to prefer these ones...

  • @soadfan1224 They use wooden handles rather than rubber ribs because wooden handles give wayyyyy better grip( i cant stress how much) and the grip stays even when it gets wet. Also, the wooden handle feels quite comfortable, but can get a lot of blisters, ofcourse rubber ones are a death bed for blisters when they get wet. all in all, wood is better.

  • @patrarok i usually use wooden handles, they are much grippier when dry than wooden ones. but wooden ones are better when wet. and everything gives blisterss :/

  • @patrarok for me atleast wooden ones dont give me blisters but rubber ones just rub the skin right off and give me horrible blisters

  • Wooden handles are sooo much better man

  • haha this race is the first race that i ever watched... i had my fist rowing practice about a year and a half ago, and as soon as i came hoe from that i found this on you tube

  • What the f...!!! 20 meters more and the germans were able to came in first place

  • guess they were late in responding;)

  • It's better to run out of gas, then to run out of race course

  • you're right mate, he did catch crabz

  • he did catch a crab

  • That was amazing. These men are gods.

  • Steve Williams at 7:05/ 7:06 looks like he nearly caught a crab or something

  • looks like it

  • he did, he recovers it and they have enough momentum to win

  • GB has dominated this event for the past eight years.

  • @eaglesfan37 no they havnt. 2001-2004 was a toss up between them and the germans, and in 2003 the canadians shocked everyone, GB only won in 2004 because they put pinesent and cracknell in the four our of hte pair.

  • nice race, grand finish:)

  • excellent finish by the germans

  • germany haa

    they are the best!!!!!

  • An incredible race

  • reasons for frig/bucket/chinese rigging

less moment on boat, therefore more rigidity and more effiency

if bow is stronger than 2 in a conventionally rigged boat, frig rigging gives 2 the advantage in moment when he sits at bow

and finally, it looks more interesting lol

  • please call it tandem rigging... "frig/bucket/chinese" are clearly idiot american terms for it.

the only advantages of a tandem is in the timing between the 2 and 3 seat and the way the boat runs. The tandem shifts the forces in the boat so it naturally runs a little straighter and the bow man is more able to apply more force without turning the boat, thus resulting in a little more boat speed

  • @djraimundo6 just curious why these are "idiot American terms"

  • "Dorney Lake is one of the best and most beautifull rowing lakes in the world" this is a lie! unless you go to eton? it is horrible. its 2k too long and sitting on the stakeboats is just scary!

  • Anyone else notice Williams pulling a massive air stroke near the end of the race? Lucky for him they had clear water, he looked like he was really struggling at the end

  • WOW yeah your right

He's rowing was pretty sketchy in that race

  • Dorney Lake is one of the best and most beautifull rowing lakes in the world

  • To everyone, having a section in the boat with two rowers with the same side of oar, is called a tandem rig.

Fig rigging sounds like some lame american name for it.

  • "bucket rigged" is a term also

probably some "lame" Brit name for it eh. Lighten up

  • lol lets all play nice :)

  • In Ireland we call it Continental rig. Im actually in this video somewhere!

  • USA look very uncomfortable with the following tail wind

  • Yeah Dig the PINK CASTLE at 1400mtr mark!

  • the first time I did I got 1:49 in 500 meter and I weigh 235.6'4 14y

  • shitty indeed. i pulled a 2k at 1:44.7 last week. I''m 14 and i weigh 171 lbs

  • @hottdog2007 That sucks

  • @hottdog2007 I pull 1:47.5 im 144 lbs, 15yrs

Guy in our seniors pulls 1:40 and hes 160lbs

  • @Sigmarian You pull that on 2000m or on 1500m?

  • @poretobatido uhh 2000m why thats only 7:10

I'd pull much better now cause im 6-10kg heavier

  • @Sigmarian I have the best ergometer scores in Portugal. I'm 15 and I pull 1:41 both in a 1500m and in a 5 minute test. I would like to know what are your scores out there. Anyone my age please share your 1500m or 5minute results

  • @poretobatido damn, how tall & heavy are you

thats damn good man nice work

  • @Sigmarian I am 5.9 ft tall and I weigh 176 lbs

  • @poretobatido awesome, I am 5' 10' and about 165lbs

    When i pulled 1:47.5 however I was 5' 9' and 144lbs

  • @Sigmarian Was it in a 1500m test or in a 5minute one? cause I haven't done a 2k ergometer test yet

  • @poretobatido uh that was a 2k

never done a 1500 or 5 minute. And btw my ergo time is nothing too special. I only make the crews I do cause of seat racing

  • @Sigmarian in portugal we only start doing 2k races when we turn 16. I only do 1500m races.

  • @Sigmarian im 6'0 165 pounds and hold a 1:37:0, a 6:28 for a 2k. im only 16

  • @bjbjbzz hahahaha. liar.

  • @2TheGuy2 yea i Lied, I'm 17.

  • @poretobatido I can pull a 1:39.5 for a 1500 meter peice. 1:41.7 for a 2k. 1:49.8 6k. 1:52.3 10k. I'm 6ft, 154 pounds.

I just turned 16. I'm pretty good on the erg (especially for my age, weight, and length of time rowing... which is about 1 year now)

But on the water, guys who have been rowing longer and have worse erg scores consistantly beat me... I'll get better tho :P

  • god that course is nice, in england

  • I used to row too, and we were pretty good lol

  • klasse Endspurt von den Deutschen! aber die Briten ham trotzdem verdient gewonnen

  • why do some teams have the oars port-starboard-port-star and some port-star-star-port?

i only race 8's and quads

  • its called fig rigging. It's just so that the strongest rowers can go in the middle and the more techincal rowers can go at stroke and bow.

  • Actually I beleive it puts less stress on the boat rowing port-star-port-star, its all about moments and stuff, nmothing to do with stronger rowers.

  • Because the standard p-s-p-s rigging creates a transversal torque twisting the boat to starboard at the catch and the reverse at the finish, while the p-s-s-p rigging (invented by motorcycling engineer Giulio Carcano for the Moto Guzzi Italian four that won at London 1948) eliminates it.

  • There are different reasons for it guys. We frig-rigged an eight one summer because stroke side (port for you yanks) (it was a bow (starboard) rigged boat) was pulling the boat round. We also tried frig-frig-rigging it (bow, stroke, stroke, bow, bow, stroke, stroke, bow)...that was an interesting summer lol!

  • it's done in some eights as well

it depends on the people in the boat. if yu have two really heavy, hard pulling guys who both row port, you can't put them in stroke or bow because they will turn the boat with every stroke. So you put them in the middle (the engine room) where there's less effect on the course.

  • for our varsity tryouts we had to row the same length after the finish line my arms and back went numb damn only the adrenaline pushed me all the way, it was exciting good thing the boys and i landed 2nd

  • i am j15 and ive rowed here twice, its rubbish coz u can see the end, 2k of doom!!! not like the curvy river i train on!!

  • i have rowed thier:) did it a couple of days ago for the south coast champs

  • Same, what team do you row for? I row for BTC

  • I row Junior 4's for Hastings, we represented CARA there this year after our first season.

  • Thanks soooo much for posting this video. Have been searching for this for ages...Munich was a catastrophe - let's see what the future holds for them....For me Steve Williams is one of the best, nicest and definately sexiest oarsmen I've ever seen. Good luck for Beijing!

  • someone please post the last world championship race. plllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase

  • california speedway!

  • LOL. They just lost this title to the kiwis in Munich.

  • nice clip

  • they are called fours because there a sweep boat not because they have no cox, that means der coxless

  • wow this id so amazin I LUV YOU DAN crew coach

  • theres no coz so their called fours or sweeps

  • I´m really impressed with the German´s!!! If they had 100 meters more they´d have passed the British!

  • they wouldent have maintained it

  • you can have either a coxless four, or a coxed four. they are different events.

  • why does no boat have a coxie? there not quad so shouldent they all have one

  • i love racing at dorney.. it feels wierd cos u hav raced where de world champions have.. woop woop! its much nicer than holme pierrepont lol woo..cnt wait til dis season.. gna b so much fun!

  • I've been in a race there!! at the wallingford regatta, J14 girls quad. I was only sculling though because I'm not old enough to row yet but I will be soon and I can't wait!! I train everyday and realllyyyyy want to get to the olympics.

  • i was a rower for 9 years:D

    Very cool sport!

  • I hate waitig at the starting gates.

  • Yeah, its usually when you have to go to the bathroom the most. LOL.

  • He he, yes during Yugslavia Championship I had to pee just ten minutes before the race :) So I stood up, while others were holding the balance of the boat.

  • You do what you gotta do....unless its a number 2. LOL

  • wow

  • What a charge by the Germans. That was awe inspiring.

  • This is awe inspiring stuff. The British crew were well deserving of that win. I'm finding coxless fours to be more entertaining than their coxed equivalents. The races in 4- seem more intense and ultimately faster, convincing people of that in my rowing association is proving quite difficult.

  • amazing rowing by the GB but Germans are the heroes of this video

  • Why are you not rowing anymore Max? You injured? There's almost always a way to get back into it. Good luck mate. It's the best sport in the world!

  • Naw, just left to take time off (for other commitments) and regret it now. And since I'm not in school its tough to get together with the guys over the winter to train for the season....maybe next year.

  • Great race...I wish I was still rowing.

  • Doesn't matter how you win, just that you do.

  • amazing

  • amazing

  • wow! andrew triggs hodge rows at my club, molesey boat club, he is an extrodinary rower

  • You're and exroudunairy poor spelllar.

  • so are you

  • I think that was the point...! Taking the piss of makoto, correct me if im wrong?

  • beast of a german crew!

  • Awsome race! and the 4 is still not beaten!

  • Now they are - unfortunately. Couldn't believe my eyes. Let's see what Jürgen Grobler will do about it. Would be a shame to brake them up, but mybe necessary...

  • Germans are amaising!!!in last 500 they kiiled!!!from 4.22 sec to one second only from leaders!!!!great tactic!!maybe not great but affected in this race! :)
