@eptonsi First of all, German is older then English, most of English comes from German. Though the Two-Zwei.. Hmm.. The old Norwegian word for "two" are written rather similar to the present English word "two". It was "tvau". You may not see the similarities, but the way to pronounce "tvau" is something like "twau"... So, centuries later, it was reduced to "two"..

Yeah, a lot of English is derived from Old Lower German (Not what these guys are singing) and also Old Norse and Norman French. It's not that German is older than English it's just that it preserved itself more than English, which over a thousand years has morphed and simplified into what we're now speaking. English however was able to retain traditional Germanic sounds, such as the th and w. i.e. the O.E. thu which became thou in English and du in all of the Germanic tongues.

If you read any old German texts you would notice that the German spoken 1000 years ago was just as foreign to its modern counterpart as Old English to modern English. It was saturated with Latin words which the Germans removed and replaced with German ones. Your language of Norwegian even has Danish, Dutch, German, French and English influence.
