You can't compare this to Georgian architecture. Robin Hood Gardens is as close to post war Britain came to committing crime against humanity. We need to have a government inquiry into how his and other Brutalist structures where allowed in the country. What happened? Will we make the same mistakes again?
Disgusting lump and should be razed. Has none of the charm of Sheffield's Park Hill. The Smithsons designed buildings for other architects to coo over, never for those who had to use or live in them. Why the heck should we have to house an entire Bangladeshi community anyhow? What about the indigenous folk who have been waiting years for a home?
Its not the buildings... its the dodgy people that live there and spoil it for the genuine residents. They're building high rise blocks in Canary Wharf every day and the bedrooms are nowhere as generous in size as in the old 60s blocks. Admittedly some were badly designed, but how could they predict how bad society would become & behave? I lived on the 25th floor on a rundown council estate, but I didnt mind it. The view was amazing. Some blocks are ok with 24hr security and concierge etc.
Robin Hood Gardens is very much a case of love & hate. Question is, do we let hate prevail? I mean, difficult if your a resident and you don't like it, but for everyone else...they know what they can do...
It annoys me when they talk about demolishing these places. Where are they going to put all of these people? They're not going to build new council flats are they?! Okay there might be a few new housing association places but all they'll do is build private homes which working class people can't afford. They should spend the money refurbishing the building. Although backhanders from businessmen trying get their greedy mits on the area will prevent this i'm sure. End social cleansing!
my block! ;)
