@ovitchdavid I would translate it differently, personally, probably more like "Men are wicked," as the official translation has it, or "Men are mean." Then again, this is coming from someone for whom French is their second language (though one I have studied for over a decade).
There is just something special about experiencing a French story in French, whether you speak the language or not. That's what I love about this version: it's magic. It isn't about who I think acted the best or sang the best.
in the musical either but its not an evidence but in the original script when notre dame is taken by the gypsies it was supposed to be illustrated...but i think they just changed it because it was too messy... something like that
with frollo's brother death and all that stufff...anyways
I think I know what you mean ; he raised her, so he should see her as his daughter, right ? Yet he seems quite young. He must be about 10 years lder than she is... To my mind, that's why he thinks she's his sister... Am I clear ? I'm French and I'm not always ease in your langage...
Well actually, Esmeralda was never a gypsy by blood. (SPOILER) In the novel, she was born in Rheims, France to a French mother - but she was kidnapped by Spanish gypsies when she was a toddler.
esmeralda was kidnapped by gypsies when she was little and was raised by a gypsy women, whom they call her mother. that women died andetrusted her to clopin
Well actually one of the gypsy women, in the novel, had told Esmeralda that she actually was the daughter of a French woman by giving her one of the baby shoes that she wore the night she was kidnapped and told her, "When you find the matching shoe" (because it had fallen off when she was taken) "You will find your birth mother".
@EmilyGreene1984 It's just stupid that they had to give her brown hair and eyes and a dark skin, just because otherwise eveyone would notice something wasn't right, and that's the whole plot of the story :D But theoretically, she could have been a blonde with bright blue eyes...
@EmilyGreene1984 Yes, but she doesn't know it. She did always think the gypsy woman is her real mother. In the novel, it's horrible because the gypsies left their own child (Quasimodo) at the poor real mother of Esmeralda and the mother goes mad and gives Quasimodo away.
well i love the original the best.Because the original is always the best. Mainly because a lot of the time the words and phrases dont get translated right. But thats just my opinion

It is surprising that he considers her as his sister.
Or maybe he considers her a "sister" by similar Gypsy blood.

No, I meant in the book. In the book, she is raised by her mother, and later, she gets kidnapped by the gypsies.
Its ok if your not fluent in English, Im Russian, so Im also not that fluent.
Mais je parles un peu Francais.

Thats the point! She was never a Gypsy but was raised by a real mother...Somehow Clopin acts here as if he really is her brother...Strange...

Then the gypsies left the infant quasimodo in her place, causing her mother to belive that she was cannibalised by the gypsies.

I can't really tell if Clopin is trying to defend her, or is coming on to her >.> I hope it's the former; Clopin/Esme just isn't right.

well in this version of the story he thinks of her as his little sister, so I'd say probably the former
