  • Am I wrong to say that Husker Du did what Nirvana was trying to do long before they even though of it? I hear all these pixies comparisons, but it was truly Husker Du, and maybe The Who, who really influenced Nirvana's entire persona. Loud soft isn't the revolution of Nirvana, it was making emotional, true, rock from the heart relevant and in the mainstream again. Just my opinion, love all those bands, peace.

  • @tracehazarrrrd good call. I read once that Kurt played in a Creedence covers band when he was 15 ....if thats true they're probably an influence - hooks and riffs. .... I think Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was an influence too - heavy melodies !

  • Im just mind blown...my god what a fucking awesome band, I agree best husker du videos I have ever seen, that melody, the feeling, the guitar one of the all time greats people...

  • wats this sghit???? somebody actually paid to watch this?? hahahahha

  • great fucking band, they don't make 'em like this anymore

  • 3:03

  • I unfortunately tuned in to this band about a year after they broke up. I did see Bobs Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain tours and Grants Nova Mob shows. All good but Husker Du's music is a foundational brick in my musical influence. Even 25 years later, I am still moved by the melodic fury this band produced....This is a good quality video too. Definitely in their prime.

  • Bob actually was working class. He went to college to escape the small town he grew up in where his parents operated a little grocery store.

  • Saw them in Chi in '84. Took a week to recover fully. Cubby Bear Lounge.

  • I was at this show and the PA was so bad that you couldn't hear shit.

  • @MegaTondog

it hasn't improved over the years ;-)

  • Thanks for this!

  • They look like they're having the fucking times of their lives. So fucking humble - no ego at all. I wish I could've seen them live.

  • The energy is just exploding from every inch of this band and this vid. I have never seen anything that can top it.

  • husker fuckin' rocks! i've seen bob, grant, and greg as a chef since. they rock!

  • there will never be another band like husker du. wish i could have seen them live early on (or even later for that matter)

  • Not sure if I would have made it through high school relatively intact without the 5 Husker Du tapes I was able to order through my tiny town's tiny record store. That Flying V should be in the rocknroll hall of fame.

  • @travisnealtodd70 Oh, that guitar is more than a Flying V... it's a Lawsuit Flying V! a truly collector piece, and totally agree: it's rocknroll hall of fame worthy.

  • lol look at bob midair at 0:50...priceless

  • This event ranks among one of the most important in music, heck, world history... We have the AWESOME Huskers.. playing a packed house, thousands of miles from home, and TEARING it up.. This was not supposed to happen ... They turned the music industry on it's ear. ON ITS EAR. These 3 barrel-chested, honest, working class men, came from out of nowhere to redirect the course of history. They did more for humanity than the atom bomb.. (I don't even know what that means, but it's A LOT)...

  • @bubblegumkiss2 am not sure about other two but bob was in college so he wasnt in the working class

  • 6 motherfuckers dont apologize.

  • MIGHTY !!!!

  • Husker is an acquired taste, like beer scotch and caviar all the good stuff is!

  • The Flying V & Apologize

This might be the best-ever husker video out there on the web. It depicts them at their halcyon-- in 1985 (just look at Bob's golden locks!), it features, in my opinion perhaps the best rock n' roll song of the 20th century (in the 2nd millennium for that matter :) and the band just seems to be in a feeding-frenzy along with the rowdy audience. This, to me, is just tops. Tops. Nothing better will ever be made in the rock industry, it's just not in the cards anymore.

  • Candy Apple Gray

  • the only times I ever actually heard the audio clipping was at @hskrs , and @Blkflag!

  • jodidamente buenos!

  • I like them, I like them, I like them....

  • This and New Day Rising were the first two Du songs I ever heard, I was immediately hooked.

  • anyone in near london who wants to start a husker du covers band, message me : )

  • So Awesome. I saw them on tour after every album they did. Loved all every time but the Zen Arcade tour was one of my favorite shows of all time.

  • I love this stuff, I'm surprised bands aren't staring to cover their songs.

  • never EVER fails to fire me up when i watch these videos. i saw the band for candy apple grey and warehouse @ the west hartford agora ballroom, good lord 23 damn years ago, i was a more energetic slimmer lad then LOL

  • Saw them in NYC at The Ritz - priceless

  • They hit with the power of The Who. The only two bands that made me want to break things-gracefully.

  • When my 45 year old ass feels old, I fire up Husker and bring back the fire. Works every time!

  • @SuperBukowski right on man same here 45 and these guys always make me feel young

  • Rocking the baby-boomer right out of my hair!

    Get out of the way!

  • Take me back to another time before there was even such a thing called indie......way ahead of their time :-)

  • Los padres de todo.

  • best schnauz in rock music!

  • You hate the foo fighters?? bummer for you

  • so good. better start to listening some good old music!

  • back in the day i followed bands like the; kinks, stones, zep and the who, it lead to bands like pistols, ramones, x and clash that lead to bands like huskers, naked raygun, Social D then on to nirvana, sound garden, green day, offspring etc. God knows why those guys in the 80s weren't recognized when it was arguably one of the best times in rock n roll history.

  • @Clark54322 cos they would not sell out in one million years. greatest indie band ever!

  • no doubt the leaders and the greatest--live they were uncomparable-- nirvana wtf-new age beatles

  • The only reason they didn't get to be bigger, was the fact that by the time they were playing, silly hair fucking metal ruled the airwaves. Enter Nirvana, and everyone thought that they had invented a new form of rock. Ironic.

  • I agree. Not wanting to cause an internet riot, who here thinks Husker Du were "better" (it's subjective, I know) than Nirvana? Could Nirvana have existed without Husker Du? Pixies?

  • Foo Fighters?!

  • @beowulven I like Nirvana allot apart from the first albumn, but the Huskers are/were THE band. and now, when they get together Sugar are. imo it's all down to bob mould. the guys fantastic.

  • @beowulven sorry missed the pixies comment. yes, to me they were a very near second to the huskers. however, i hate the foo fighters. to me, groul was just lucky he was in a band with cobain.

  • @jacotango

So you simply disregard Grohl's talent as a drummer/guitarist/singer because you feel he's overshadowed by Kurt Cobain? Alright, if that's how you appreciate music....

  • @MrCrunkJoose no, i'm saying he cracked it imo, which means nothing, he was in nirvana. other than that, it's all down to taste. that's all. i don't like the foo fighters, you do. no problem. it's like velvet's fans saying reed was far better than cale and then someone saying the opposite. means nothing. it depends on your taste. no harm done? you know youtube is a place for inflamatory comments. i made one. it won't hurt you. cheers mate. you enjoy your music, sincerly....and i'll enjoy mine.

  • we need more music like this

  • bob mould is the jesse ryder of hardcore

  • awesome footage!!!! thanks so much, it really brings me back

  • I always think Husker Du's albums sound like failed demos compared with their live footages/records

  • Strangely Bob reli looks older here than what he is now... 'Half man half lager' was to b sayed about him in those days.. :P I love Huskers! And dis is at their best!

  • absoluetly breath taking id have gave my right arm to see husker du,sadly just before my time ,although i am going to see bob mould in december :)

  • these were great shows, excellent job of the SST peeps in recording this.

  • Yeah, the camera crew should be transferred to SST accounting, they could use some good guys.

  • God, the clipping! I remember now just how insanely loud their shows were. So cool.

  • greatest live show ever!!!

  • saw this tour in columbus great band

  • To get that sound, You need a MXR Distortion Plus running into a DBX 166 compressor. Put that final sound into a tube amp like a Fender.

A humbucker guitar like his Ibanez Flying V copy as well.

  • you need the solid state rolands as well.

  • Amazing band! Amazing distortion!!

  • God I frickin' love the guitar tone in this song... this guitar solo is what wet dreams are made of! lol

  • pure delight!! punk-rock at it's finest!

  • Heh Heh, I saw them twice. i got my driver's license and drove 70 miles to get there in my little old datsun.

  • @mammothdump were you driving a datsun,an automatic,radio static?....with Les Claypool?

  • @mammothdump going 70 miles an hour listening to these songs the whole way i bet :]

  • @mammothdump

The gasolin you've paid would have been still a good investment if it was 700 miles ! :-)

  • i wish i was here...........fuck

  • Bob represents DC.

  • how the fuck does bob mould get so much noise outta one guitar

  • His fingers and attitude, first.

Then some distortion+ pedal, fender & yamha gear, a touch of compression... and the all-out playing. Funny how he doesn't even look like he is trying very hard... Legends!

  • My problem is, that wonderful noise drowns out all vocals and the rest of the band to a certain degree. Even the producers didn`t clean that up during recording on any of their LP`s. SST or other. Sugar got it right. Bob uses minimal, basic stomps but it all comes down to the amp and settings. The volume & tone controls on any axe he played were never backed off for any reason. Rare use of bridge pickup. In Bob`s world, more is better. There you have it. I`d love a remastered HD box set.

  • More of a 'mats fan myself, but I see where they get some comparisons. Faithful 'mats fan myself, if have to say, I like stinson a shitload more

  • BEst Band Ever IMO... Nothing touches Zen Arcade and New DAy

  • you are spot on . ZA goes on in my house every day still. Chartered trips best track in all rock. ever

  • Fucking AWESOME!!!!!! I LOVE Mould's guitar tone, one of the very greatest ever!!!

  • i would have gone apeshit in the crown!!!!!!!! huskers rule!!

  • top notch!

  • Without Husker, no Nirvana. Without Husker, no anybody.

  • Gotta be tha hardest working band of my generation. They broke up a week before the Omaha, Nebraska show, and all I got was my money back! I did see B. Mould here about ten years ago, a one man band of a show! Yee Haw!

  • the bass player looks like a white phil lynott!

  • energia energia energia allo stato puro.....

  • sono incredibili... uno dei miei gruppi preferiti in assoluto... peccato che Bob Mould si sia buttato anima e corpo in progetti solisti...

  • Bigman, they were INSANE live.Bob stopped the show because of too much slamming. Eventually resumed playing (after leaving the guitars next to amps in super feedback mode for 10 mins or so.) They played Warehouse (most of it) which I hadn't bought yet, but it was still amazing.

  • is there any more from this show? its great!

  • So long right-wing morons. We won. And we intend to keep on winning. Get on the right side of history before it's too late. We'll be running by you so fast you won't see us when we go. Got that? pissant.

  • OMG: Bob's curly blond locks ... He looks like a drill sergeant in the U.S. Marines, or an Admiral at sea, commanding a nuclear submarine ... unstoppable... The magic of a band becoming themselves... reminds me of Dylan in '65 when he toured London for the second time, and was adored by all.... 'sermonizing while the audience was lost in song' etc. etc. I'm not sure rock 'n' roll will ever know a greater nucleus as the great Huskers.... "It's your turn to look me in the eyes ..." God bless

  • You have nailed it the BIG PLANK!!

    BANG BANG BANG

    Thank you!

    :-)

  • I Love You Greg Norton!!!!

  • classico!!!!!!!!!!!!!!va tomar no sul....

  • Oh yess!!

  • I fuckin love it. Bob, Grant, and themoustache, delightful. Husker Du. Best band in the world....I apologise.....

  • Brilliant! Just fucking brilliant! Husker Du (love em, relly love em))

  • great, great ,great

  • Man, I bet they were AMAZING live.

  • Greg Norton is a badass

  • I saw them live at Bessie's Boat House in Norfolk, VA in 1986. Awesome show. The db's opened for them.

  • Saw a lot of shows at the Boat House in Norfolk... Heading back to that area soon... Sure it's not the same...

  • awesome 80s mosh pit!

  • Definitely, but I do have to ask: what the hell kind of innovative moshing move is that at 6:00??

  • It's called "The Cyclone". 2 people cross wrists and grab hands, spin fast and let go, flying into people.

I did that many many times at that vey location. First Ave rocks!

  • The way Bob and Greg are jumping on stage while playing... clearly shows this must have been one of THEIR FAVORITE songs, even though Bob never acknowledged Grant's songwriting.

    Legends!

  • 2:49 - looks like the VHS guys got it wrong lol

  • Do the Du!!!

  • you suck.

  • you do suck.

  • nakatira ako sa laguna philippines kung saan backward ang utak ng mga tao hindi nila alam ang mga kinukutya nila husker du totoong punks

  • drinkin and stinkin' on heaven hell whiskey in the jar right now

reminds me of sally maclenane by the pogues

or and it stoned me by van the man morrison

  • Is that a guy getting hauled away by security at about 3:14?? This show looks insane. Check out Greg going nuts during Heaven Hill

  • Nah that wasn't security.

  • The audience looked dead... didn't?

  • I'm feeling so nostalgic after watching this.

  • I was at this show. Had no recollection that there was a video shot of it. Cool!

  • really!? i hate you, damn.....never seen them live.....you lucky guy....

  • I saw Bob live solo a few weeks ago.

  • it's 'cause he lives next to yours house, maybe?

  • I wish! he was on tour in the UK

  • there should be economically problem, to come in italy, or damned little fucking problems of unknowing kind. Can you tell me he's still active as Sugar or solo? In this case, that's the reason.Everyone has listened or listen to indie music, are waiting for them---

  • Bob Mould come to Cobalt (bar) in DC sometimes. And there's always the Blowoff party once a month.

  • ??? DC is Washington DC? Blowoff party is\are? I got relatives in US but i'm not..

  • this music is timeless...songs and passion.

  • DeanaPZ and MisterHitchens....I hope you are being sarcastic....

  • Denapz & MisterHitchens ha ha ha! Your ignorance gave me a good laugh, thank you.

By the way you can find Dave Grohl doing a cover of Husker Du's "Never talking to you again", check it out.

  • The sound on the original VHS issue is really smooth and fine, but whoever uploaded this one either had a bad copy or really fudged the conversion process, most likely by not keeping the volume record input low enough.

  • my god there are some fucking uneducated morons out there

  • Denapz & MisterHitchens: This was filmed in 1985. Dave Grohl was more than likely INFLUENCED by Hüsker Dü. Both Hart & Mould did not start the band as "old people"-- they started it when they were in their twenties and began what you all now know as "alternative music." They influenced many post-punk bands like the Pixies. Oh wait-- do you even know who the Pixies were/are?

  • P.S: "Under Pressure" was COVERED by MCR-- it was originally a Bowie song he performed with the band Queen.

  • Couldn't agree more, Denapz... I saw that Bowie (try to) cover MCRs Under Pressure (the killer duet with The Used) and it was like seeing your uncle after he drinks too much... it was embarassing for everyone in the room. No one knew where to look or what to do with their hands.

  • and what the fucks up with joy division ripping off the killers and fall out boy man. i mean the guy cant sing and the snynths dont belong on love will tear us apart like omg. denapz your fucking retarded. i hope you die of syphylis. yes i know i spelled that wrong!

  • In reality, Grant Hart (drummer in Husker Du)influenced Dave Grohl. At least thats what he told me. Ask Dave next time you go by his house.

  • I've seen some embarrassing posts on Youtube in my time, but this is my all-time favourite!

  • Dave Grohl was 14 years old when this video was shot. I suspect Dave Grohl was doing in 1985 what I was doing at the time, being a kid in a garage band trying to sound like Husker Du.

  • oh yeah thats right he wasnt in cream until 87 i forgot

  • oops i meant to write scream not cream lol

  • I know you posted this a month ago but I just had to tell what an idiot you are deznuts

  • you idiot...

  • You're right, Husker Du stole that song, went in to their time machine, travelled back to 1985 and made this concert.

  • I don't know about you guys but I actually prefer Grant Hart's songwriting to Bob Mould's, but both are great, and these are two great songs.

  • I agree. Hart's songs are generally simpler in structure, but they're more emotionally affecting at least to me.

  • Sweet Jesus! That's one of the few clips I've seen that actually captures what they were like. Absolutely insane.

  • The Power and the Beauty.

  • God was in this band...he was backstage...turning it up to eleven!

  • I liked chubby Bob with hair better.

  • This video is fucking awesome! I stood right on the stage with them during a show in '84, pushing skinheads & punks off the stage. It was such an exhilarating experience to be in the middle of all that energy and wall of sound. Everyone wanted to be on the stage but we had to protect the equipment. Anyone who ever got to see Husker Du is very lucky!

  • i forgot the s in transcendent.sorry

  • i have been aware of u tube for a year now least acrimonious site yet. that says it all. husker du broke up right before they were to play in omaha, thank god i saw the replacement's 3x's at the drumstick. both bands were trancendent.

  • like taking a bath in music...

  • FANF&&&INTASTIC!!!!

The greatest band most have never heard of

  • my favorite song

  • This is the best six minutes in all of You Tube.

It's hard to find vintage HD footage that really captures the band at their peak (1984-1985). These two songs, which happen to be two of the best they ever recorded, are perfect.

  • This is the best six minutes in all of You Tube. Seriously.

  • I cried.

  • greg nortonis the best , and of course his moustache

  • this is wall of sound

  • very awsome. easily the best thing to happen to punk/indie (next to the minutemen of course).

  • I like how asdf doesn't know what underrated means.

  • been a fan of this band for years . but the first time I have seen any live footage ,it captures the bands spirit brilliantly .noise, power and beauty!!

  • Who said it couldn't be possible to play a melodic punk/hard-core? Thxx Husker Du.

  • c'mon. Husker Du underrated? Anyone worth his/her salt bows down to the Du and knows the power of the music and the vital role it played in the progression of American punk and indie rock.

  • Thanks atman....great video

  • deffinetly the most under rated band ever

  • Amazing this band even existed!!!!

  • amazin'

  • Melody and anarchy = Husker Du

  • Great show.

  • One of my favoutire bands, but I wish they had the had the live drum sound on their albums. The sound of the drums on the records never worked for me.
