I think Tony Iommi wins because both of these artists wrote their best music with Tony Iommi. I find both Ozzy and Dio's first two albums were both their best. The only good song on Bark at the Moon was Bark at the Moon, and after Last In Line Dio's songwriting slipped into mediocrity. Try listening to Dream Evil, all the chorus's for that album are just the title of the song repeated for every song...it's horrible. After Tony Iommi it's Randy cuz Craig never played on any of Dio's good abums

To me, Randy was a true "pioneer" in the rock & metal scene...Randy had a certain "attitude" about his playing, and had great "feel" and excellent phrasing. Craig, while a decent player, is a bit too sterile sounding, for me. Craig's playing does nothing for me.
I used to think Craig Goldy was amazing when I was a kid, but his style never developed and live he never improved on the Vivian Campbell era solos and rhythms. Craig Goldy's rhythm playing is very basic, and it's obvious he would struggle playing a simple pop tune with a funky twist. He is too stiff a player. The best players like Randy Rhoads are not limited to one style of music. They push themselves out of their comfort zones. Goldy made Dio boring and even Tracy G was a better rhythmplayer
R.I.P. Ronnie and Randy, can only imagine the music they are making in the netherworld. With that said, have based most study of guitar after Randy, and to date have yet to hear anything that can compete w/ what he did while alive. This is not fair...Goldy is a good metal guitar player (Dream Evil isn t so bad, or?), Rhoads is a Guitar God, a founder of a new style and a very, very virtuos guitar player. Rhoads playing is in the same liga as Blackmore, Vai, Malmsteen or Satriani, an important influence for all guitar players after him.

Uli Jon Roth would smoke anybody mentioned. He was that good. Tokyo Tapes shows he was way ahead of everybody else. He was Neo-Classical before anyone else. His playing was so on point and tasteful. I say this knowing how great Goldy and Rhoads are but words cannot describe Uli Jon Roth. Roth didn't play fast because he didn't know what else to do with fingers; everything had a purpose. Giving credit to Goldy and Rhoads, they don't just play fast for no reason either. I love them all.

The intro was Holy Diver like someone else said...Shoulda been Dream Evil riff or something Craig actually played..Oh well..Minor detail..Randy was a great guitar player who came from an time where you didn't really hear great shreadding on the radio except for Van Halen...I mean, these guys really stood out compared to the rest...Many copiers came along soon after.The only band from the early 80's that got radio play and came close to the ferocity of Rhoads and Ozzy were the Scorpions..IMHO

Van halen kicked down a door that wasn't kicked down and after that door he blew up the next one! Randy happened slip through some cracks :D
Goldy is very fast, I am not taking that away from him, but he is fairly mechanical and just palys what is written, while I've seen Rhoads and Aldrich just get totally abosrbed in the music and be in a totally different world. Plus both of them have songwriting talents in solos that is just incredible.
There's no feel in Craig's playing.. It's all show. Randy has that extra bit. as well as all the classical knowledge.. I mean damn he got more play on here too.. Craig may have been in a band with Dio at some point but that doesn't make him any better of a guitarist.

I don't think this exercise of comparing is a very useful thing. My answer is: they are both fucking great. Personally I love Randy, specially because of his classical influence and his solos are just incredible beautiful. Is he better? I don't know and don't care, I respect Goldy's fans, they have plenty of reasons to love him too. I'm glad they gave us so much.

This is not fair...Goldy is a good metal guitar player (Dream Evil isn t so bad, or?), Rhoads is a Guitar God, a founder of a new style and a very, very virtuos guitar player. Rhoads playing is in the same liga as Blackmore, Vai, Malmsteen or Satriani, an important influence for all guitar players after him.

i like some of goldy's work. but come ON!!!! rhoads pioneered the neo-classical style of playing! the work randy rhoads did in ONE YEAR beats everything goldy did in HIS WHOLE CAREER!!!!!!!! blizzard and diary are better than anything goldy did. honestly, i think ozzy had a better solo career than dio did. BUT DIO IS A MUCH BETTER SINGER. i love goldy and i love dio, but rhoads cannot be touched. only tony iommi, jimmy page, eric clapton, etc are comparable to randy rhoads. RHOADS/GOLDY BOTHROCK

If he was alive today these guitar players today would worship him!Craig is great at covering other bands songs, & I think his original stuff sounds like anyone elses playing,still awesome !The best(all around) guitar player is Jimmy Paige, the best rhythm player is Tonni Iommi, the best solos come from (3 way tie) Mattias Jabs,Vivian Campbell, & Zakk Wylde. There R alot of other great players but I dont care 4 these arpeggio garbage players.

im just not intrested in van halen, they bore me, sorry not my thing. my scope is fine i think anyways, i listen to lots of stuff and learn other things than just randy rhoads, im my own songwriter so i have my own style which is alright. not gonna boast about it but im pretty good. dimebag, angus young, even craig goldy i like too. lots of different music i like so there you go man

You All Need to watch Uli Jon Roth. Scorpions Sails of Charon '77. I like Rhoads also but Roth is way undervalued.

Uli Jon Roth would smoke anybody mentioned. He was that good. Tokyo Tapes shows he was way ahead of everybody else. He was Neo-Classical before anyone else. His playing was so on point and tasteful. I say this knowing how great Goldy and Rhoads are but words cannot describe Uli Jon Roth. Roth didn't play fast because he didn't know what else to do with fingers; everything had a purpose. Giving credit to Goldy and Rhoads, they don't just play fast for no reason either. I love them all.

The intro was Holy Diver like someone else said...Shoulda been Dream Evil riff or something Craig actually played..Oh well..Minor detail..Randy was a great guitar player who came from an time where you didn't really hear great shreadding on the radio except for Van Halen...I mean, these guys really stood out compared to the rest...Many copiers came along soon after.The only band from the early 80's that got radio play and came close to the ferocity of Rhoads and Ozzy were the Scorpions..IMHO

Obviously Randy is the better player . But he is better than most all hard rock guitarist anyway . Only guy on Randy's level is EVH . But Craig is a great player ,
imo the best Dio guitarist . Vivian was good on the albums . But live was too wild . And Tracy G was worthless . Craig made one of Dio's best albums Magica .

@VoooooooDooooooo I would argue they don't know how good van halen is. To me Randy is a scale runner and van halen is a accurate riff creative awesome player. (im not going to argue he is more popular because thats like rooting for the jonas fags) But lets get some facts down... randy did what was already done. Van halen kicked down a door that wasn't kicked down and after that door he blew up the next one! Randy happened slip through some cracks :D

Goldy is very fast, I am not taking that away from him, but he is fairly mechanical and just palys what is written, while I've seen Rhoads and Aldrich just get totally abosrbed in the music and be in a totally different world. Plus both of them have songwriting talents in solos that is just incredible.

There's no feel in Craig's playing.. It's all show. Randy has that extra bit. as well as all the classical knowledge.. I mean damn he got more play on here too.. Craig may have been in a band with Dio at some point but that doesn't make him any better of a guitarist.

@991med The guy's great though, I mean shit they're both super successful, but from a guitar players perspective, I would say Randy has more "feel". Every note carries it's own weight, where as Craig kind of gets lost in scales.

I don't think this exercise of comparing is a very useful thing. My answer is: they are both fucking great. Personally I love Randy, specially because of his classical influence and his solos are just incredible beautiful. Is he better? I don't know and don't care, I respect Goldy's fans, they have plenty of reasons to love him too. I'm glad they gave us so much.
