  • To Western people: if jumping is bad for a horse than reining and barrel racing is REALLY bad for them! To English people: If barrel racing and reining is bad then jumping is REALLY bad for them! To people like me who have rode both for many years and can do just about any discipline and love both (yes I prefer english) They are both HORSE SPORTS both are not dangerous for the horses, especially not jumping or it wouldnt be an OLYMPIC SPORT! Both can have dangerous situations, fun situations etc

  • how is jumping bad on a horse! its what some of them natrually do just because western can't jump, english means freedome aswell, in summer we gallop in the feild and full speed we don't stop for no one.

  • well I used to ride western and yes it was fun but i was looking for more so now i ride english nothing against western they are both great but if your looking for compition id say go for english.

  • I like English you can jump sorry I sent that comment it has nothing to do with anything

  • I ride both. And I LOVE both. I love the freedom you get from an English saddle! It's a lot more fun, I think, to gallop in an English saddle than a western. But I also LOVE western. I ride in reining events and the connection between horse and rider has to be just perfect. I love taking my horse in a slow jog down a trail in my western saddle.

  • i <3 western

  • I personally go for western because of the versatility and connections required for the horses. Think about it 9 times out of 10 a well taught western rider uses very subtle leg cues through all that leather. I'm not downing english. Some of my best friends ride english, and I've learned a lot from them just out of curiosity. But Western's better. The saddles are designed so you can do twice as many things with the one piece of equipment verses 3+ english saddles.

  • @Samhwain As I had rode bot in many different subdisciplines, both english and western have MANY saddles that are required to actually have a safe ride for horse and rider. Barrel racing needs a special saddle, just like Jumpers needs a special saddle. Endurance/trail riding needs a more comfy sturdy saddle just like cross country riding does. Dressage needs a special saddle as does reining for comfort and for giving correct cues. Both are just as alike as they are different!

  • SOME English:Get on a horse, gallop TRUE full speed tightly around barrels, or even try Western Pleasure. & Jumping is bad on the horse’s joints. SOME western:I’ll bet you that you’d fall off at a jump! And if you are saying that it’s just to look pretty, I’ll tell you now, it’s a very good workout for both the rider AND the horse! And western is crappy on the horse, too if done wrong. If you don’t know anything about the disciple, do not effin comment on how you do.

  • @SpenceAndAria729 Just with any sport, there are dangers. Both disciplines and sub disciplines of those disciplines have many dangers. Over jumping and over riding can cause the same injuries that a barrel racing horse can attain. I think you just need to be more open minded. I have rode both disciplines (western 7 years english the last 2 years) and both are incredible. do I get 5 times the work out riding english? absolutely! but western is much more laid back. There are pros and cons of both!

  • @mooneypadfootprongs I totally agree! I've been more pushed to the "limit" with english, but I just LOVE western :) It's so laid back.

  • I like both. I also think that all riders should learn western and english..it's good to be versatile in both 1. to make yourself a better rider and 2. to be educated in western and english.

you never know, there might be a time you NEED to ride english 'cause something went wrong so if all someone knows is western...then he/she most likely won't be able to stay in the english saddle 'cause it's so different. Same goes for western.

  • WESTERN!! *-*

Aber wenn so schlecht Beispiele für Western genommen werden, ist es klar das Englisch besser erscheint.

  • both are amazing

  • english is the best beacause you can do more and it has less tack

  • @melissahorse What's that gotta do with anything? xD

  • personally, i like english better. I dont like the western saddles and their horn. And i would rather jump than barrel race :)

  • I can do anything. I can rope, run barrels, sort/herd, jump, flat, anything. I personally love eventing, so that's what I do. But I've got ribbons in everything from barrels to dresage. They both have their high points, but eventing is just the most thrilling to me.

  • Oh yah. BOO ENGLISH :O (Just kiddin')

  • WESTERN IS FOR LIFEEEEEEE <3 !

  • English, done it all my life and western saddles are ugly in my opinion especially the horn...

  • @1xPonyPrincessx1 U can really hurt some people by saying things lik that. Like me. I ride western. How would you like it if I said english saddles are ugly?

  • @TheCowgirlbarrelrace I really don't mind if thats your opinion then thats fine, I just don't like the horn.

  • @1xPonyPrincessx1 they are not....i personally think that the enlish saddles are so skimpy...that y people who ride english always get hurt...(so do western ppl but ya kno...)they are easier to fall out of....

  • @horserider2587 not really as long as you have good balance, yes I understand they are smaller but this encourages you to have better balance, western saddles are alot deeper..

  • @1xPonyPrincessx1 well ok thats tru...but in my opinion western saddles make it easier to keep balance in and they r comfotable too

  • @horserider2587 yeah, I have nothing against western I just prefer english, I see english as more i'm not sure how to explain it and I see western as a more laid back style of riding..

  • Next time put facts in there, not just random pictures.

  • English all the way!! <333

  • English is Amazing! I love jumping!!!

  • I think the horn on the western saddle is annoying, soooo ENGLISHHH

  • English English only English !! Classic Is The Best !!

  • I ride English. It's so fun! The're both realy fun to learn, but Western is a little hard for me because I'm not used to putting my hand on my thigh.(sp) The're both so fun though, I don't care what I do as long I'm with a horse. ^^

  • WESTERN!<3

  • @lilsampson13 TOTALLY AGREE I <3 WESTERN!:)

  • In the past, I learn to ride English, but then I found out that Western riding is better for me, and now there's nothing like Western riding ... It's more relaxed, but my best friend is a happy English rider...I think western riding is better

  • I have tried english and western. I like both, but western is better for cantering. English is better for posture and jumping. so both are about equal

  • I ride english and western. i do jumpers and eventing i also do sorting and team penning i do lots of other diciplines to but these four are my favorites! i cant decide which i like better though :)

  • I believe it's a matter of opinion:D and for me

    It's WESTERN ALL THE WAY!

  • western:unsteady, wobly, not very comfortable and lots of courage

english:steady, not that wobly, comfortable more orginised and safer then western

i prefere english coz i feel safer and more relaxed.i also love western but i prefere english.NO OFFENCE to people who prefere western

  • Bareback! then I can put a weird mix of western sitting trots and long stirrups to make it more comfortable for my english self and former western horse ;)

  • WESTERN MEANS FREEDOM <3

  • @MsTeppolina Totally agree. When western comes to mind i think of freedom

  • @TheCowgirlbarrelrace i totally agree

  • Where I live it is very impractical to ride English just because of the terrain and what I want to get done. My friend just started doing English though and she said that its really cool.

  • English :D

  • oh and yeah i do western ..but i did just start huntseat last summer its really kool!!

  • LOVE that song :)

  • WESTERN ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!! HOOT HOOT :D

  • english is much nicer and hurts horses less so there.

  • @ilovemyhorsetoyahxx real mature

  • @ilovemyhorsetoyahxx Western dont hurt the horse!

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH IM PONEY MAD AHHHHHHHH X X X X X X X X X X

  • riding is riding if you are a good rider. The difference between western and english isn't as big as most of you might think.

  • Western. It's a challenge and the speed of it makes it fun and exciting :D

  • Comment removed

  • @karintastic Amen!!

  • WESTERN ALL THE WAY!!! But I will say it is fun to jump logs in my field

  • English all the way baby ! I used to ride western but then it just got really boring after a while, when I ride English i get to learn and do so much more stuff !

  • English. I was started out on it, and when I ride Western I feel uncomforable now. Plus I love jumping<3

  • Western all the way now! i personaly think after riding english a few times that i mind as well be ridin bareback because what! thats really talent right now! no strups or anything:)

  • western!!!!!! i love western!!!!! we use english words and we have the posture and all that but we ride western....:)

  • A true western horseman does not use the horn for balance, so your arguments for "too easy" are invalid because you are/have seen only amateur riders. Western riding was developed for a working purpose, the saddle for comfort for riding 12 hour days if not longer. The horn is for the rope, not the hand. I have never used the horn for balance in my 17 years of riding. I fell a good many times and personally, I would prefer my children enjoy riding than to fall and never touch a horse again.

  • i just switched from western to english, im not sure i made the right choice. Please tell me your oppinions.my dream was always to be a pro barrel racer, but idk.PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE COMMENT!!

  • @BarrelRacerHorseGirl I did western and switched to english too! but switched back to western, english wasn't me i think westerns more fun, started to barrel race its absolutely amazing! stay with english for awhile just to know for sure! :)

  • @BarrelRacerHorseGirl GO FOR IT!!!!

  • Western!! Even though I ride English :P

  • In my opinion, english is wayyyy better! I ride both western and english but I like english better. Although I really want to get better at westen and try my hand at reining! (:

  • Western all the way i love it

  • Both are the same. I've ridden both English and Western, but I prefer English more because I love jumping. That said, I still think both require talent and skill to excel.

  • Comment removed

  • I ride English, although i would love to learn Western:)

  • ENGLISH:D

  • i like both i ride both and find them equally fun!!:)

  • Western!(:

  • both ar amazing, who cares, as long as you love the sport and you lovethe horses and dont lose sight of what you ride for :)

  • English. I've ridden western a lot, it's too easy. English helps you learn balance, you become a better rider.

  • English events are fun and interesting to watch, and flying over jumps is fun. But I'm more into the mounted shooting, and the adrenaline rushes once you find how fast your horse can actually go. English does need talent, but western needs just as much.

  • i ride both

  • i like English better i think but i ride western so i can enter my first show and have it not be so hard core. if you know what i mean.

  • Okay these english riders are saying that western riders are saying all this stuff...really? Have you SEEN some of the stuff some english people say about western? GUYS, IT GOES BOTH WAYS. I ride both and, in my opinion, english is harder which makes me love it but western is a tad more fun than english which is why i love it. BOTH!! :)

  • English definitely. Looks better and takes more talent. Western looks good for hacking out but western riders rely on the horn way too much, even when walking. You have to be in complete control in English saddle. You don't see many western riders galloping without holding onto the horn. Tons more skill needed for English.

  • no offense or anything but...

Ive ridden both and western is SOOOOOOO easy!!!!

Now English is where you actually need talent!

Western is not always bad i mean if you were trying to teach a absolute UNTEACHABLE English rider western is sooooo easy that those kids could even ride! just it wouldn't be as good!

  • English...if you choose western better, don't feel bad...not everyone has talent.

  • @serapierce OH good one!

  • @serapierce Well I ride both. Started western and now doing english....what about me? :P

  • Ok just asking if you can be like trained western but on the same horse have a English saddle and just ride with that sometimes even though your trainer ONLY does western??

  • English. I've ridden . No offence to people who ride western. But I find the western activity for cowgirls. I read books and study the types of riding. In english the rider has to know what to do. They have to be in controll of the horse. In western the horse has to know what to do. I find riding to be a bond while working with yourself and the horse. To me western is uncomforting and dosen't seem as plesent. In english the tack is light and easy to carry. It helps your seat if you ride english.

  • My friends and I are all divided on this subject. I ride both but personally get ridiculously bored doing dressage and that stuff. I love jumping though and compete in the nice low stuff haha. However I definately prefer western, it keeps my interest so much more. Working cattle is amazingly fun, I'm addicted to it! So addicted to it I'm getting another horse so I can compete in it. Western for me =]

  • Western. The horse can do anything an English trained one can, but they use the moves for working, not for looking pretty. I've talked to dressage trainers and many of them say they like having their horses work cattle because it helps the horse find purpose in its dressage movements. The saddle is made for comfort of the rider, and has more functionality as well. My boy can ride both, but he HATES the English gear. Settles right down in is Western tack. And rides a ton better too!

  • western

  • @MyStyleMySmile How is english any different for your posture than western and so what if its "cleaner" your riding a horse that has rolled in mud at some time and your telling me you dont ride somewhere there is dirt I WANT YOU TO TELL ME WHATS SO MUCH CLEANER ABOUT IT!!!!!! ENGLISH IS OLD OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have rode both western and english and as much as I loved to jump I loved the feeling I get when I am in the western saddle! I feel safe and I feel so much more relaxed and I showed hunters previously but now I just go up and ride for fun! western gal here!

  • I was riding western before I could walk and then I went to a stable and tried english and then did that and now I'm doing western and now english is not my thing so I choose western

  • Totally western! English is to proper and junk (: No offense, english riders

  • @BarrelBrooke no it is not junk! i have been riding englis since i was 5 it just takes tallent (which western riders dont have) ! saying no offence wont change anyting >:(

  • @ollymurs4ever OK ENOUGH WITH THE FIGHTING. I have ridden western my whole entire life, but I have HUGE respect for english riders. and who ever is childish enough to think their riding style is better has no respect for horse back riding AT ALL.

  • Its a tie for me! =) I was trained and raised doing Engish and enjoyed the jumps and the movement. Yet, Western for me was more free and wild =D

  • I like both but I absolutly love english <3

  • English. I have rode both, and english is better! I didn't feel safe western, too wobbleie! English needs more talent! English is also good for the posture! No offence to the people who put Western.(:

  • @HelpingHorse ok i respect your choice but the reson it was wobbilie is becuase 1 your doing it wrong or 2 you didnt tightin your girth enough. and english needs no more talent then english

  • @horseluvers1000 No offence, But Who are you to judge on my seating. I was doing western perfectly. My girth was perfectly tight. English helps your posture. Its was better then being a bag of potatoes... No offence(:

  • @HelpingHorse well i wouldnt go caling people a bag of potatoes you jerk western is just as good if not better then english

  • @horseluvers1000 Wasn't Calling her one. It's the general way of the saddle. sooo.... :L

  • @HelpingHorse i love English but western is easier for me cause i live in pain i have a horrible back leg and wrist, but i still do ride English but mostly western

  • @HelpingHorse very true! i have ridden western and the styrups kinda weird... and western looks kind of scruffy aswell :) again no offense western riders!

  • @HelpingHorse I ride both english and western and both are tough and take talent and lots of pratice to excel.

  • @HelpingHorse Good western riders have posture too...

  • ENGLISH! So much cleaner and better for your posture XD

  • English FTW !!! <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Westernnn!!!!!!!!! I love western!!! It is so fun to barrel race. English is to fyhiddzszbdxidc I don't even kno a word to say about it ;)

  • English :) i have done both but i prefer english

  • Western is better. It's not uptight and fancy shmancy like English. Plus it's fun

  • @Helix1396 English isn't fancy lol i spend most my time galloping across fields and having fun jumping logs in the woods, everyone thinks it is snobby cos of people at big shows but us english people are not like that! We are really nice fun people who just mess about on our horses ;)

  • i am an western rider and i loving it !! nobody can touch western!!!

  • WESTERN! because its like english riders don't know what the word speed means and when i barrel race my horse its like i'm riding the fastest horse in the world.

  • English all the way.... I cant STAND the western lope.

  • English

  • English!!

  • I ride English but have good friends who ride western, they are different sports in my opinion and are both hard. You should see me tide in a western saddle, its a comedy show!

  • english all the way :) to be fair, I've only gone western about three times but I love english - the control, the freedom of the saddle, and the jumping :)

  • i ride english

  • i rode western most of my life now i ride english for a year and i love english more.English comp. racing, jumping, hunter, dressage, polo, and eventing Western comp. barrel racing, pleasure, and pole bending. There are more people who rides english so english is better and more famous so stop arguing. If you havent tried english and is arguing saying western is better then stop and try riding english ok.

  • You all say how western is sloppy. Excuse me? Do you realize how difficult it is to run barrels or rope? It is not even close to the word sloppy. We are just as good as an English rider is.

  • @TurnNBurnBaby3 THAT IS SO TRUE

  • And in Engilsh you can do the exact same thing as in Western. I used to ride a horse and he was English and Western and I did barrels on him ina n english saddle. So, stop dissing us and stop saying were snobs and we aren't. Thanks(:

  • Look people. Whoever keep saying "Western is sooo much better because English is uncomfortable for the horse and we hold them back" Well...I ride English and maybe you should realize. Yeah we hold our horses sometimes because they can get a little fast. We let our horses relax. My horse is a very nice horse and will go a long way. She started out as a western horse but the old owners taught her English and turns out she loves to jump!! She would rather do English than Western. Sooo yeahh........

  • @MegaHorsesaremylife Have you seen what most of the people who ride English say about western?

  • @SpenceAndAria729 Its a battle on both sides, and both sides need to shut up and realize we all ride for the same reason: we are passionate about it and LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE horses!!! Battles like the ones people have on YOUTUBE are immature! and no offense...but last time I checked EVENTING is an Olympic sport!

  • @mooneypadfootprongs Once again, I completly agree. :)

  • western is about control and looks sloppy i'm with the English riding because it is so much more collected and elegant

  • @sashulse But it takes MUCH skill.

  • i go with both i love speed and games for western but i love to look good and have a cleaned up horse to show off to. there both great

  • @tufflittelcowgirl one summer day i spent litteraly the whole day makeing my horse beautiful and i let my da hold him while i went to get the camra... my dad let him freakin roll in mud -_- he was like "he was going down and i didnt know what was going on" i was like "right now i could kill both of u so please go get the hose and as for YOU.... well u just think this is hilarious dont u"

  • i ride both and i love both! tbh i love ridding bareback but that is sooo untrue people who ride english are stuck up snobs trust me im not stuck up or a snob me and my friends just like to have a laugh when we go out for rides western or english, i give my horse a rest if i ride with a bit i ride bitless most of the time. I dont think there should be western vs english you should just love ridding and your horse no matter what way you ride!

  • okay everyone that says " western is better because everyone that does english are stuck up snobs" thats not even true, yes i ride english and im not a snob. lots of people i know arent, and some are but hey i know people that ride western and their snobs too. sooo.

  • western is the best we will win and we always will english is for snotty stuck up know it alls!

  • i love english riding

  • you can do the same things in a english saddle as you can western i do poles and barrels for fun riding english and jump and everything.

  • @justgottaloveatticus Well ya but at least in western we let our horses relax and not hold them back in a bit and make them wear an uncomfortable saddle and make them jump higher and higher!

  • @2301Allie umm yeah, english is more comfortable then western the western is much heavier on their backs then the western, and yes we hold the horses back sometimes so we actually have control of our horses, and by the way horses like jumping. also we do let our horses relax.

  • WESTERN!! Lol Im adicted to the speed events, barrels, poles and mounted shooting :D

  • @GottaLoveMyHorse why would anyone choose western!?!?

  • for english u do jumping and stuffand when u take western whats the difference?

  • i ride english mainly cause i am english but i love it !

  • @ Lilbat: Rly? That's so cool!

  • I rly miss the horse i used to ride. He was a big, beautiful chestnut with a white stripe down his face. he was so friendly <3 only trouble I had with him was the bridle, since I think someone hurt him with it. every time i tried to put it on him, he would throw his head back and I would look like an idiot for not being able to get it on him properly. still luffled him though.

  • @BriannaRose013 I ride a horse mathing tht description named Nevada. The only problem is the bridle too! He has a cyst in his ear and they cant fix it and he throws a fit when you put the bridle on.

  • @LilBat54 Matching*

  • @Lilbat: XD 'Tsall good!

  • @BriannaRose013 I just noticed this. WE have the same first name! Cept I call myself Brie XD

  • 2013, get it?

  • @ Lil: XD no, 013 is the year I graduate HS.

  • @BriannaRose013 OOo okkk XD hahaha I was clueless! Yeah I get it noww

  • @ Lil: I AM 16 and I DO have a job. i hade 170 last week for work as a waitress at the village Inn. But it goes to college and a car, since im getting my liscense (sp) in a few months.

  • @BriannaRose013 Ahw :( I guessed u were younger because of the 130. But I'm guesing tht means Jan 30th? haha my bday is Jan 29th XD but good for yo, saving up for college

  • :( gosh i miss riding like heck. I haven't ridden in years. mom couldn't pay the 35 bucks a week. The barn I went to (Blue Valley Stables) had 2 barns, an indoor rink, outdoor rink, and a pony barn. I enjoyed it a ton :) I rly miss it. and my trainer.

  • @BriannaRose013 Ahw that suck :(. Maybe when you're older like 16 and can get a full time job? The only reason I can pay for mine is because I babysit for this couple a lot and make 15$ an hour. I hope you can ride again at somepoint

  • @ Lilbat what barn did she ride at? i've never been to do a place that actually does teach side saddle. I learned to canter and jump and everything before my mom had to stop paying for lessons. But I didn't know that riding side saddle was apart of riding lessons...

  • @BriannaRose013 Schauber Stabled New York. They just got in trouble because a rapist was there XD. It was a terrible place. They wouldn't let her tack up a horse or groom it. They also put her on a horse with severe back problems and she thought she was walking but she was in a canter. I felt terible for the horse. Good thing I never set foot in that place.

  • @MOOMALATTACK: I'd stop antagonizing this girl while you're ahead if I were you.

  • @Lilbat: I don't believe that. 'Princess' riding would be side-saddle, or sitting in a open-top carriage behind a horse. So there.

  • @BriannaRose013 My friend went to a barn that taught English and they lied to her telling her they would ride western later and she was side saddle the whole time.

  • @LilBat54

We dont ride side saddle every listen, hell we ride in our english saddles 24/7
