@Dummweltschutz If your parents are halfway worth their salt they will be proud to help you to put some of your money in this. And if that doesn't work out, maybe you can find someone else trustworthy to help you do it. :)
If I get a job. and I'm paid every other week. And after all my money is set aside for things I have to pay for, and then I donate 25$ to Kiva.. and then the next payday, another 25$. Then I have 50 dollars that I have saved without saving. Hmm....
As I was watching this , I happened to be reading looking for Alaska for the third time. My iPod had the video playing on my table and I was reading haha
kiva partners charge a good amount of intrest. perhaps necessary but there are some things i find wrong with kiva. do some research before you loan through them. I did.
There are no awesome bankers. There are only bankers that screw you or bankers that are getting ready to screw you. Peer to peer lending has done more than corrupt banks ever will.
I remember Kiva. It's a really good tool to help people NOT living in the U.S.A.
Or it WOULD be a good idea, I believe, if it did not strike me as a financial band-aide; which (much like leaving tips for one's Waiter) had the potential to further delay the correction of the ever-widening gap that is Socio-Economic Inequalities in our increasingly shrinking world economy. **gasp for air**
Don't worry, John. Some day soon, you're baby will pay YOU to poop. #Winning!
How about yes?It was once illegal to charge interest. Now banks charge interest that keeps you in debt forever. While the federal reserve gives them no interest loans.
I am philosophically in favor of living within one's means. Is there another organization where I could just donate the money and the people who get it will pay it forward once they've succeeded?
John (and other nerdfighters), have you seen that the Nerdfighter team at Kiva has now essentially doubled the $30,000 they had before your message, and has set as a new goal $100,000 by January first. DFTBA.
This isn't really about this banking/lending, but it is about decreasing world suck. Some friends of mine really need some help &I figure Nerdfighters would be willing 2 do what they could. See, they fell in love over a hike to raise domestic violence awareness, &he's trying to get legal status here in the US but it is so much money. If we can all take a look at this link and help, every bit helps them, who have done so much trying to decrease world suck. itsaboutpower.blogspot.com

Instead of thinking of the poop your baby produces from that food, you could choose to think of the other things she does with that sustenance. Such as growing, playing, and being generally adorable. ;)
when I see that we (nerdfighteria) almost doubled the total amount loaned on Kiva ($57,000 at this moment), I just get this happy feeling that we are indeed decreasing worldsuck. Thanks, nerdfighters.
I've been using Kiva to reduce world suck for years and I love it. So far I've also enjoyed a 100% repayment rate, but I really wonder what local organizations Kiva works with, and do those local groups charge these poor business people interest?
This is awesome. Great initiative. Can you do more blogs on the economy, and money, and that kind of thing? Cuz this clip was way more fun and informative than any economics text book I have EVER crossed. How about doing something on the WTO?
Thanks for spreading the message on this, it seems like one of the most positives ways to donate to developing countries! I'm definitely going to be campaigning about this at my college.
Tak about decreasing world suck. Since you recorded this, Nerdfighteria has brought the total amount lent on Kiva.org to over $55,000!! And I'm about to give it another push...
John, don't get me wrong, I want to see funding for the maginalized. Your proposition about the credit crunch regarding banks holding cash as protection against a run on the bank. Consumer response (competition) is part of the regulation these bank guys should be facing - your (kiva's) scheme seems to reroute the bank's work to everyday people thus eliminating the banker's need to respond against the inefficiencies that trigger better practices. If banks are bad, people SHOULD withdraw the cash.

Kiva originally was fantastic. However since they've been sold they are terrible. The amount of money Kiva is now making combined with thier growing rate of shonky 'investigators' is causing the end user (poverty stricken entrepreneur) to suffer.
It's a pity that such an brilliant idea is being taken advantage of.
@specialfae1989 I did at one point have a few hundred dollars in Kiva unfortunately I've been forced to remove it due the the problems mentioned above.
you're nearly at 70,000 (for books signed) cool! you're getting close to halfway! now that i have congradulated you on that, HURRY UP AND SEND THEM OUT! please
Hey John, did you know you can auto-loan the money if you forget to sign in? I forget where the option is, but you pick what kind of countries, businesses, etc you want them to auto loan, and as soon as a loan is paid back... BAM they send it out again for you. I did this because I kept forgetting to sign in!

Kiva is amazing. My city's rotary gives my school's Interact Club $400 just to loan on Kiva. My dad also does a lot of Kivaing. (Is that a word? I think that's a word now.)
John, the brazilian version of "Looking for Alaska" is translated as "Who are you Alaska?" and I'm a little bit annoyed by that. PLEASE don't let people do this kind of stuff with "The Fault in Our Stars".
In seventh grade, my Civ class donated 50 dollars a month to Kiva. We voted on who we were going to help each month. About half way through the year, we helped a guy with 6 kids get back on his feet. It was awesome.
JOHN i tried to indirectly buy baby poop but my mom's paypall account said she had to "verify" that it was her and that's never happened before... so she wouldn't get it bc she doesn't know your site... is there a way to buy stuff online w/o paypall?
its fun watching john's latest videos in chronological order so you can see the number of books boxes decrease and the little-red-sign-thermometer-thing go up!
ok so yeah, like, microfinance is a pretty cool way to ~help people in developing countries, but I think there are quite a few problems with supporting Kiva; many of the MFIs Kiva partners with are essentially loan sharks - quite a large proportion are charging interest in the 60-70% range, which i think seems unjustifiable even when you take into account instability and lack of banking infrastructure. how exactly is debt slavery decreasing world suck????
But how will I get to break the struggling 1.5%'s legs? Not to mention, a lot of them have probably already had at least one of their legs blown off...
What you forget to mention, John, is that to transfer the money from you to the entrepreneur, you have banking costs. Each entrepreneur who takes your money for his idea, ends up paying the banking fees to withdraw and then deposit back the money you loan to him. We are not the bankers - by investing in this ideas we are basically charity venture capitalists (true venture capitalist ask for a return/profit on their investment). The bankers are still in the picture, transferring our money across.
Yesterday my 8th grade class did a "My Turn" thing, where we talk about our favorite book. The person who went in front of me did Looking for Alaska. The one I did, well, lets just say, there were 19 Katherines in it. :D
Kiva is a great site! We did it for our Legacy Project in the Eighth grade and it was a blast, I think our class (150 students or so) raising around 6,000 dollars.
You mean we sit on a big pile of Inflation. Not loaning money out means the Fed isnt printing more money to loan out to you. Every time they loan money out they have to cover that in printed money. That causes items to go up in price.
John, I know that you often discuss Muggle Economics, but I was wondering if you could help explain the controversy over Wizarding Economics. I mean I get that Gringotts is the equivalent of their Federal Reserve and what not, but well first of all, how do most wizards make money? How does the Ministry of Magic get money? Is Gringotts just an extension of the Ministry? There are just so many things about wizard economics that have remained unsaid. A video about this would be cool. DFTBA
@swadhera95 Wizards earn money in the same way muggles do, quite clearly. Don't you remember how many wizards were employed in, say, the Ministry? And how there are wizards that own shops in Hogsmeade and probably-a-lot-of-other-places? I'd assume the Ministry of Magic gets it through taxes in the same way our ministry does, not because there is any proof but there isn't any reason NOT to believe this is how it works. Everything that wasn't mentioned in the books was assumed to be the same.
@swadhera95 I've always wondered what happened to the Pound-Galleon exchange rate each year when letters go out and hoards of Muggles visit DIagon Alley to buy stuff.
Cool! My sister introduced me to this site in eight grade when she gave me 25 dollars to loan. I have been loaning to people 25 dollars for over 5 years now :)
I'm curious how you feel about the fact that the third party loan companies Kiva works with charge the borrowers between 15% and 60% interest outside of Islamic countries?
@jalepenobutterfly Let's say it costs the MFI $50 to service a loan, regardless of the size of that loan. That includes the cost of their labor doing all the initial application and the regular weekly collection, buildings, gas for vehicles to travel half a day into the rural areas, etc. If the person is borrowing $5000 then $50 is only 1% of the amount lent. But with microlending, they may only be borrowing $200... so $50 is 25% of the total loan. MFIs also borrow from banks at interest.
John, as much as I love you and Sarah together as well and Hank and Katherine, I must say, if it ever doesn't work out for either of you, I'll gladly be your backup girl because, as an avid friends fan over the years, I would love to be Rachel Green.
Oh, if the economy wasn't so bad and it was easier to get a job I would be all over this. unfortunately, I am broke and have no job. Only a massive debt from a degree that doesn't seem to matter to any employer.
You know what sucks? Not being an adult and therefore having to involve my parents into an awkward discussion about decreasing world suck....

John Green,
Aruguably, your concerns about emerging country small business financing may be overblown.
1) Emerging countries often peg their currency with US allowing them to import low interest rate policies
2) Emerging country small businesses have high interest rates typically due to transaction costs and much less to do with interest rates
3) Kiva is awesome, regardless of points 1 and 2.

ok so yeah, like, microfinance is a pretty cool way to ~help people in developing countries, but I think there are quite a few problems with supporting Kiva; many of the MFIs Kiva partners with are essentially loan sharks - quite a large proportion are charging interest in the 60-70% range, which i think seems unjustifiable even when you take into account instability and lack of banking infrastructure. how exactly is debt slavery decreasing world suck????

I donated $100 to Kiva, and I've been re-loaning that same $100 for over a year and it makes me feel good inside. DFTBA :)

Wait, so:
i) You don't earn interest from loaning money to people through Kiva?
ii) There is a 1.5% chance of not getting your money back, on EVERY transaction?
iii) It costs $25 to join?
iv) It costs a lot of time, where you could be working and earning money.
What the fuck is the point of kiva? Or am I missing something? (I'm taking this from the viewpoint of being a LENDER).

I'm glad you're still supporting Kiva. I saw your older videos and wondered if you still used it.

DFTBA
swadhera95 5 months ago 300

I'm curious how you feel about the fact that the third party loan companies Kiva works with charge the borrowers between 15% and 60% interest outside of Islamic countries?
jalepenobutterfly 5 months ago
@jalepenobutterfly Let's say it costs the MFI $50 to service a loan, regardless of the size of that loan. That includes the cost of their labor doing all the initial application and the regular weekly collection, buildings, gas for vehicles to travel half a day into the rural areas, etc. If the person is borrowing $5000 then $50 is only 1% of the amount lent. But with microlending, they may only be borrowing $200... so $50 is 25% of the total loan. MFIs also borrow from banks at interest.
