I don't think people appreciated the fact the Jack never took anything away from Shirley. He didn't touch her career. Marty Ingels in pulls Shirley down and a lot of people don't want to work with Shirley because of him.
I suspect Shirley has a lof money problems becuase of Marty.
The whole Cassidy bunch are snobs. Shirley, a snobby Republican that claimed she was often uncomfortable around the gay men of Broadway (yet she married one). David, an egotistical douche. Shaun, Shaun who ?
@ire4along No need to copy and paste. "I have studied his life and he was straight." Well I would suggest that:
1. You read David's book, C'mon, Get Happy, where he writes at length about when he learned of his fathers homosexuality after his fathers death & how he has never forgiven Evelyn and Shirley for keeping it a secret.
2. You watch the PBS show American Masters where Shirley Jones speaks of her knowledge of Jack's promiscuity with gay men & how it affected their relationship/marriage.
aS far as Shirley, both her and Jack said that the separation they had before his death was a mistake.
Here is also a interview with Shirley from 1983.
" He wanted to come back to me right up until the day he died," she said. "And I wanted him. Thats the terrible part. Much as I love Marty and have a wonderful relationship-
I'D say this is Marty were sitting here. I'M not sure if Jack were alive I'D be married to him
@ire4along lol...well I suspect that the debate between you and I on a dead mans sexual orientation is most likely boring the others to tears. So unless you have an interest in digging six feet under and asking Jack if pee-pees were his thang and reporting back...I'm done. Enjoy the music.
Think I'll skip off to watch a Rock Hudson flick. Oh the memories of Rock sitting at the bar at La Cage stuffing dollars into dudes socks. Hmmm, was that before or after his marriage? I forget. Peace out.
@Showinbulge If Jack Cassidy was gay he gave the likes of Rock Hudson, Walter Pidgeon, Janet Gaynor, and Rosalind Russell one hell of a run for their money as far as "window dressing" is concerned.
Part of the problem is the apparent insistence upon pushing his less talented kids as a way for folks to get to know him. Just find clips that demonstrate the great talent Jack was. Exsna on the kids. THEN YOU'LL KNOW JACK.
I agree. Jack was a talented man with a wide range of acting ability who made a name for himself.
His kids had an advantage because they had a famous last name and connections.
Even with that, David Cassidy is not the most pleasant person in the world. Shirley Jones at least is honest in saying she would never have survived in show business if it weren't for Jack.
@ire4along I guess what bothers me the most is that even in death Jack Cassidy is somehow in the position of having to be defended. Who really cares that Shirley Jones thinks she wouldn't have survived ya da ya, that Jack suffered from bipolar d/o---folks should just take a look at his body of work and they will see that that's what made him a star.
I agree again. From reading about stars, bipolar is a prerequisite. Jack was sold out by certain members of his family for ,"the story of my life" type things. Jack started out in show business when he was 14 and worked his way up. He wrote, directed and at the end he had his own production company.
i read how people enjoyed working with him. Jack had a great work ethic.
Now that we have youtube and hulu we could see the body of work.
@ire4along I was informally connected to What's My Line during its last two years in production, and I remember from the few times he was on the panel that he was so cool that I wished he would have been asked to take a permanent seat. I didn't recall feeling similarly about any of the other panelists. To take it a step further, I think it would have been great had he replaced Soupy Sales.
This is a quote from Shaun Cassidy in People Magazine. This is a few years after Jack died.
"The biggest disappointment in my life was that my father never got to hear me perform. I think he would have been proud of what I've accomplished, but he would think the way I try to handle things is even more important."
Oh Jack, we hardly knew ye! Even though he didn't live to see his 50th birthday, he still looked like someone my father would have played bridge and drank gin with at the Tarratine Club in Bangor, Maine in the mid-70's.
Up to the time of his death in 1976, Jack Cassidy had played more villains (3)in Columbo than any other actor, and deservedly so. Had he stayed among the living, it is is probable that he would have appeared in countless others. Suave and sophisticated, he had that rare ability and screen presence which allowed him to play a bad guy who didn't have to be overtly evil and elicit hatred from the audience in order for them to want him to be caught.
I have found this quote from Jack's son Patrick Cassidy on Patrick's career choice to follow in Jack's footsteps in Theater.
He'd be really touched and proud, I think, that I made the conscience choice to make the theater a career and that I'm making a living at a craft I have developed," said Cassidy, somberly. Jack Cassidy died in a 1976 fire at the age of 49.
I found this quote on the patridge family webpage from Shirley
What can you tell us of the bright side of Jack?
SJ: He was an incredible human being. Incredibly talented! He had this charisma that, when he walked in the room, not only women fell all over him, but men did too. He had a great sense of humor. Not to mention he was as handsome as he was. The fact that he could make jokes about himself and that he didn't take himself that seriously made him interesting.
Do you really know how Frank Sinatra or anyone else is in their personal life.
Kay Ballard (of the 'Mothers-In Laws') wrote a book last year and she said very nice things about Jack. She didn't have nice things to say about everybody.
Paul Lynde she said was not always nice and was bitter.
There is an actor with 2 stars who is still alive; I'm not kidding! Jack sang as well as acted; he has been gone 30 years and his family deserves to see that star.. I have Ryan's photo put away from "little finger's" in my house & display my starforjack magnet in my kitchen. His performance on Columbo was awesome, and I loved him on Bewitched as well.
I hope that you contribute. This man should be remember for all the good acting. We all know how hard it is to keep a show business career going. During Jack's life he managed to do it.
Who do you think you are? This man work hard at what he did. I hope that you or one of your relatives suffers from bi-polar disorder. 80% of those with bipolar self medicate through alcohal. You go pick on the other actors hat suffered from it like Vivien Leigh, Richard Dreyfuss Carrie Fisher and Patti Duke. Jack did the best he could to deal with it.YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
Catanncar, maybe my whole outlook on Jack Cassidy is wrong. I really need to research his life deeper instead of just reading so far and thinking I have the whole story. I guess what I am trying to say is I should know the facts before I comment on things I may not know about. I wish to your and yours good health & A Happy Holiday Season.
catanncar, as one who has had many years of experience living with bi-polar and alcholic persons, no matter how fine their "normal" life, it is unkind, not only to look at their problems instead of their successes and it is even more unkind to wish this on someone else. Hoping someone or their relatives suffer is hardly civilized and you may not know what you are talking about.
The media eats it up. They have their own hell to face; wishing the problem on someone else is what I objected to. I think the thing that needs to be remembered is the tragedy of that talent being ruined by a condition that can be controlled; but it is up to the person who has it to control it. It does destroy families, let alone the person who is suffering from it. Take care of yourself. I wish you the best.
Brilliant video for a brilliant hard working actor who, in life never got the recognition that he deserved! Let us all make the star happen for him. A truly worthy cause.
Since Jack was cremated I think it is fitting for his children and grandchildren to have a place to memorialized him. (By the way, Jack has two grandchildren named after him).
Wow, what a voice!

Dave Madden recently wrote a book called "Reuben on Wry".
Dave Madden played Reuben Kincaid on the Patridge Family
This is what he had to say about Jack Cassidy in his book.
I was great fan of David's father Jack Cassidy.
I got to know him on a personal level and I liked him very much.He was fun and funny.
I thought he was enormously talented.
There's a movement to get him a star on the Walk of fame. I hope that happens. He deserves one. That would be nice.

Jack Cassidy was a man of many roles.
'And no finer role, nor for which he was more suited than friend.'
This is from Sheila Macrae's autobiography
"Hollywood Mother of the Year"
Her husband was Gordan MacRae who was Shirley's costar in the movie version of Oklahoma! and Carousel
Jack Cassidy was Shirley's costar for the road version of both plays. Jack and Shirely were engaaged during the filming of Carousel.
Gordan and Sheila are Shaun's godparents.

I am sorry you took my comments the wrong way.
I too have relatives with these problems.
You must agree there is lack of compassion among the media for people with these problems.
Britney Spears is an example.
Sometimes the only ones with understanding are those who have dealt with the issue.
The responder did nicely apologize.
I give Jack's son Ryan a lot of credit for getting this campaign going.
Now if only David would stop writing those badly written autobiographies.
