I listen his music, for a few years; one year after another, my love for his music, and for him, as an artist and a man, was growing up! Now, i saw him in concert-London-- and i realised one more time;he, and his music, are timeless!I can so easy die, listening his soft, warm, gorgeous music! What a unique artist! We are rich, having him!
I'm celebrating New Year but even if I'm by myself, I don't feel alone and I smile ...I'm enjoying Leonard Cohen's music and verses and I think I can have no better celebration...Happy New Year to all :)
It is a shame that popular music and culture cannot produce more Leonard Cohens and fewer Gangsta Rappers. Cohen's music is transcendant - it acknowledges the reality of the "street", but it goes beyond and above that.
What a fantastic song, a handsome man and a lovely songbird, this was the most tearful music I've heard for very long, I did know it for many years, but a re-listening is fantastic. Thanks for the music..
It is coming, it is coming, the end of the exile of the Shekhinah, it is coming, then we all shall we reunited with our source; until then we have L Cohen's songs to fill our hearts, satisfy our "swollen appetites." It is coming, it is coming . . . one day
I first heard Leonard 35 years ago and finally got to see him live in Wellington New Zealand in January 2009 and with out a doubt it is the best show I have ever been to. He just seems to get better with age. One of my wishes in life is that I get to hear him again live.
@peglegs69 It´s true. When I was 14 he won my heart with "Suzanne" which is my real name. I´ve seen him on the the Isle of Wight 1970, in Paris 1975 and at last in my hometown Stockholm Sweden in October 2008. Yes it was the same for me - a perfect feeling. This old man just gets younger and better and gave me a feeling that this was the best that happened to me 2008 - some kind of refill? - past or future I don´t care
@TheMarieco1Yes I agree. With his 75 years today Leonard Cohen is still like 3 x 25 years. What does it matter? As long we are listening to his music we don´t have to care about time anymore. Did you ever see his DVD from London 2008 - Wonderful !!!
Hej. Jag tycker och känner precis som du när det gäller denna fantastiska artist. Har tyvärr bara sett honom två gånger i Stockholm. Jag lyssnar nästan varje dag på honom. Hans texter och musik är förtrollande.
first listened to cohen in long kesh cage 10 in 1976 loved his music and lyrics never got to see him live hope he lives forever pure genius my youngest daughter brady alice (15) started listening to him a yr ago and actually performed one of his songs at a gig in olean ny long may she listen and sing his songs the argument about his voice is really imaterial the lyrics and emotion with which he sings are what count gonna try and get him to come and sing at sean patricks in olean
This is his best sound right now. Absolutely awesome. I heard this Joan of Arc done in his younger years, and as a musician myself, he sounded like Adam Sandler and was as atonal as one could get. Actually hurt my ears to listen to him slide flat/sharp to try and settle on a recognizable note. I thought it was a joke at first. Ok, getting on my asbestos suit....flame on!!
The Muppets version was sadly the first version of this song I heard.Miss Piggy on a pile of wood that spoke and sang, and that mad professor going bonkers with a fire extinguisher while his assistant did the squeaky beep-beep's.Finally heard the original...sometimes it works that way...
I want to do this because I'm scared. PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
Ah, but is it really a tragedy when all is said and done? To be a martyr for Christ is no tragedy. It is a blessing! Leonard does such an excellent jobs always of taking fact and metaphor and blending them into sheer beauty. His imagery exceeds all others, and I've checked around!!
He is a broad-minded person who's seen all sides of life, from addict to living in a monastery. He encompasses it all. Even had an affair with Janis Joplin. I'm the product of that union. Just kidding! But that's my own personal urban legend. Anyway He's comforted me for decades, long may be live. I just adore all he does. He's a Canadian institution, poet laureate, whole 9 yards.
so i take it some of you really look forward to seeing through Irish perspective. i've got some Irish autographs on my wishlists :)) :D :P. really, i do! i seem to be stucked in my country for a pretty long time now! my fault? i think not!
I don't know but his words certainly cut to the heart and soul. The idea to symbolize her death as a marriage between 'fire and wood' is amazing and brings out the tragidy of the whole event.
Having recently studied Joan of Arc's life I was deeply moved by the words of this beautiful and sad song.I am a middle-aged man and this brought tears to my eyes.
no one can do Cohen like Cohen. One of the highlights of my (external) life was seeing L.Cohen in concert with these two ladies. It was at a conference centre that had once been a gracious train station -seems fitting- and it was filled with tables, cafe style. There wasn't a single eye/heart/ear not riveted on him, male and female alike. Wine glasses were (almost) untouched. Best concert I've ever seen, I think.
My current understanding of this song, haivng heard it MANY times, is he is exploring a delusional system of thought that allowed Joan of Arc to pay this ultimate price. It's beautiful, psychological, and very, very sad.
Not at all, unless all love is a delusion. I think for Cohen it must live on a number of levels, but that it is primarily about the love between a man and a woman, for all its destructiveness, in all its transcendent glory...
About 1988, PBS aired a Leonard Cohen concert on 'Austin City Limits.' I video-taped the concert and have listened to it many, many times since. I never tire of the experience -- it's very difficult to describe. It must be experienced!! Great poet, singer, and philosopher. The last news I heard of Leonard, he was in a Buddhist monastery in California.
Is there any way to see this and/or get a copy of it? I just saw Leonard at Radio city music Hall...I have a few precious aurdio recordings on my cell phone but had no idea how good he is live!
Leonard Cohen is a true seeker. He has experienced the sacred and the profane, and he puts all of that into his music. I believe in old souls and he truly is one.
I remember, when I first started listening to Leonard Cohen, the imagery of his lyrics was so overwhelming, I'd need to listen to a track four of five times before I heard ALL the lyrics. In each verse, he'd raise such powerful images, I'd get lost in thought on them, and not hear the rest of the song.
- "And high above all these wedding guests he hung the ashes of her lovely wedding dress."
Geez! If there are such things as 'old souls', Leonard's must be 'ancient'.
I can relate to what you have said. I stand in awe of this mans talent. Easily one of the best song writers in recent history. In English at least absolutely.
I started listening to Cohen when I was 15 in about 1995... I had to listen so many times that I memorized all his early stuff. Finally had a chance to see him this year at Radio City Music Hall.
I have been unable to find any dvd's, i would love to have just one live performance from this time period with this song and everybody knows his voice during this time is just so great, if anyone knows where to get a dvd, would love to know,I live in Nashville Tn and you can't find alot of his music.
Thanks so much. This is fantastic. I also love one where Leonard plays guitar where you are in that is in a DVD collection of Leonard concerts. Loved seeing you at the tribute at UCLA last April, "Anthem" was beyond words.
Julie, it's wondrful hearing back from the source! The internet is amazing. I will check out what you are doing currently and hope to see more. You are a true artist.
Julie??? Really??? I'm seriously in awe! Thank you for all the beautiful and brilliant music you made with Leonard over the years! Your voice is amazing. Just well, I don't have words, just thank you again!!
Oh the imagery! Joan of Arc... smokey night. Leonard you're so brilliant, I can't begin to pay proper respect. And, Julie's voice is gorgeous, too. I actually prefer this version to the studio. Aboout Nico, of course. Leonard had a crush, ain't that sweet?
