After listening to Gould '81 for years and years ('55 is insane, I can't listen to it), I recently started listening to Tureck, and must say I've gotten a lot out of her '99 recording. She plays so precisely and so delicately, and I think with such balance between the counterpoints. And she also takes a long view of the phrasing, which is really interesting. My other one I really like (not included here) is a Karl Richter performance on harpsichord. It's fierce, like everything he did.
Great piece of music and the performances were all great. It really comes down to personal preferences, and for me Gould and Kempff were the favourites.
Tureck is the most transparent (her Bach interpretations always are), but I think she over emphasizes articulation in this one and it suffers as a result. I prefer the interpretations of Kempff and Gould for this particular variation, especially Kempff's dynamics.
I barely can listen to the Goldberg Variations- not a favorite piece- but I listen I must, let it be on a harpsichord! Therefore, Wanda Landowska or Pierre Hantai performed "best" to my taste. Hantai's version, a modern recording, is cleaner, just as Landowska's loses something for the cobwebs. Without the cobwebs, Landowska is an old favorite, and so too says her cat, often seen on top of her instrument while its mistress played.
For me, Tureck reveals more of theis contrapuntal music than the others, But I loved Kempff's bouncy rhythms - wonderful playing. And wonderful playing from all of them. Does there have to be a winner? I thank God that we have so many magical interpretations. Thanks for the video

1) Gould: perfect
2) Arrau: very nice
3) Tureck: a little bit slow (IMHO) but very well articulated
4) Schiff: a perfect house-steward (orrible idea the low octave repetition)
5) Kempff: tasteless as usual
6) Berenboim: orrible (was him angry?)

Enjoyed the comparisons! I was tickled that the harpsichordists were the 'Bonus' tracks though haha

Out of these people, only Barenboim and Schiff are still living =(

I think -
1 - Gould
2 - Barenboim, Schiff, Kempff, Arrau
3 - Don't yell at me, but I think Tureck's version could be better. I wish there's a recording when she was younger.

They all played well in homage to the great Johann Sebastion Bach.

1 Gould d'assez loin
après, bof...
2 Barenboim
3 Schiff (bonne idée le changement d'ocatves dans les reprises)
4 Kempf (bonne idée les reprises piano)
5 Turek (tempo)
6 Arrau: (plat à mourir)
Je laisse de côté les boîtes à punaises
