  • A little bit of me wishes they sang 'Hogwarts, Hogwarts, hoggy warty Hogwarts, teach us something please!' at the end instead

  • what a privilege to have her speech at your graduation! What a privilege for us who have access to youtube to get to hear this too!

  • her ending sentence is really picturing her true character.... thank you ms Rowling for share your thought and wisdom

  • the 2 idiots who dislike this do not have a brain or life

  • i didn't want the audience to stop clapping nor did i want she to spot speaking. her speech was so beautiful it made me cry. she will forever change my life. and i could never thank her enough for doing so!

  • :'D

  • She inspires people every single day. Thank You Jo, Rowling for truly shaping my world. You deserve every ounce of success and happiness in your life. Well done for making me cry like a baby.

  • She is truly an amazing woman

  • I wish I were there to give her a big hand too!

  • I feel inspired and once more pushed out of my comfort zone to try and find something that will not only make me happy but also better the lives of those around me...

  • Wise words from an intelligent person - something the world can never have too much of.

  • so so true, we all have a responsibility for one another. Living with privilege in America or other countries means you are lucky to be born where you are and don't take that for granted. You can choose to do so much more with that power for we are all connected. If you choose to tune everyone else out..that is ignorance. People living in ignorance live in fear.

  • inspiring and heart-opening. and she is quite a milf as well.

  • SO HUMBLE!! INCREDIBLY ORDINARY!! She's a person just like you and i!! Very beautiful and inspiring!! I love it =D GOD if i had the honor of meeting this great woman...!!

  • So humble = so inspiring!

  • priceless ...

  • The little wink she gives at 445 is so sexy

  • WOW! That was amazing, awe-inspiring, breathtaking. Her words about the horrors she witnessed whilst working for Amnesty International had me in tears & has, in an instant, slapped me out of inaction. Her perceptive words on failure make me intrepid for new ventures ahead.

I hope her direct address to the US graduates about their unique socio-political responsibility, struck a cord with them, & resonates throughout their lives. There are few orators who rouse such emotion. JK is one of them.

  • beautiful!

no wonder they clapped for nearly 3 minutes

  • A beautiful speech. We really need to put more value on imagination and friendship in our lives. It's a shame that many of us lose our imagination as we get older, especially when (well, i think) it is what makes life go from mediocre to the extraordinary.

  • she can convience anyone that God is a she indeed!

  • mental agoraphobia!!!!

    thats briliant

this woman is a ocean of wisdom

  • so humble and honest. she is certainly a life changing woman in not only what she has created but in who she is

  • She is a true superstar. All celebrities could learn from her.

  • And this is why Harry Potter will ALWAYS be better than Twilight.

  • @ali93xx you have got to be kidding me xD idiot THAT is what you took from it? be ashamed man the woman talks about war, love and friendship and finding oneself and you bring up twilight and some dumb shits even thumb it up? LOL

  • gut-wrenchingly good

  • I can only conclude that the two dislikes must have been given for the guy at the end of JK's speach....

  • I found an inspiration today!!

  • This is a fantstic speech :) She's an inspiring person :) Who are these two people who disliked it!

  • @ais0611

" Who are these two people who disliked it! "

    PURE BLOODS

  • she is just brilliant ! and a brilliant human being!

  • (average harvard grad) - "blah blah blah i just want to make money"

  • I have never seen anyone so incredibly rich, famous, and talented yet so incredibly humble and empathetic. Not only is she a GREAT writer, but she truly is an amazing human being.

  • she is a charming woman!!!

  • she is awsome! :)

  • Longest appreciation clap ever.

  • I do not have a single negative remark about this woman. She is astounding.

  • Very intresting way she put resposiobolty on U.S citizens

  • @batain: Responsibility is with everyone. This speech simply happened to be aimed at Harvard students - the vast majority of which are US citizens.

  • Empathetic, intelligent, and an excellent sense of humor....such an inspiration.

  • That's the best speech speech I have ever heard. She is truly an inspiration. Standing Ovation!! I concur!!

  • Truly an inspirational model for lost souls!!!

  • Thank you very much for posting it!

  • Now that is called "Standing Ovation"

  • 3:52 to 4:30 was inspiring

  • She has been gifted with an incredible way with words...... wow! just wow!

  • This is truly one of the best speeches I've ever seen --- honest, unassuming, purposeful yet humorous and unmistakably excellent. Though I am not a follower of her books, her simplicity and depth during her speech says it all that she is one of the greatest writers of our time.

  • It is indescribably wonderful to listen to a celebrity who dismisses that status in favor of titles like "mother" and "writer" and "lover of classics." J.K. Rowling's capacity to think complexly about life and express those thoughts in words inspires me as much as her imagination. After listening to this, I want to keep working at being a writer, even if all I ever write is a thousand journal entries, because being a good writer means being an exceptional thinker.

  • "People who have been kind enough not to sue me when I took their name for Death Eaters" XD hahahaha... what an inspirational woman and speech! :)

  • She really is an amazing person. Just a brilliant speech. x

  • Wow applause 1 min 45 seconds straight!

  • I like her smile at the end, after she said "Thank you very much" :)

  • i didn't want this speech to stop. she is brilliant.

  • Without my imagination I think I'd be a totally different person. Our home is truly where our souls live...inside our bodies.

  • That was such a wounderful speech. She talked about everything in the world that these people (and we) needed to hear. I'll always love her and her work.

  • Wow, that speech exuded hope, humility, courage and love. I cannot believe I just had the opportunity to hear and watch this commencement speech- JK Rowling is an amazing human being. Thank you for the upload.

  • She's like, when Dumbledore was talking, ingenious!

  • She's lovely.

  • what a great, great speech......

  • beautiful.

  • i don't fully understand what she say but i get what she want to transcend to graduate ..I like her so much.

  • I want to go back to college

  • JK Rowling imagination is the power to empathize with humans she has never experienced. Amnesty international has shaped her empathy and her failure was shaped by her imagination. The product of this process is Harry Potter.

  • So utterly moved by that speech, as I wipe tears from my eyes. Thank you, Ms. Rowling, once again, for your words.

  • This is so good.

  • Very impressive. I haven't read her books and I have to admit to underestimating her. She is obviously a strong and very high minded person. The stress on imagination in the form of empathy is something the world needs. There is too much emphasis on imagination as a vehicle for dishonest trickery in our world.

  • Wow I love this woman.

  • Wow, they clapped for so long. =)

  • holy shit... the applause...

mind you, if I was witness to such an incredible speech, I would probably still be clapping :)

  • i cried that whole speach <3

  • she's an amazing woman. i hope to find a wife like that.

  • what a terrific and inspiring speech to encourage anyone and everyone it touches - like me.

  • Excellent, very encouraging and inspiring.

  • Her way of painting a picture with words is impressive. I truly felt alive while listening to her.

  • That thunder of an applause was hair-raising!

    What an incredible female!

I loved the astute way in which she mixed humour and graveness.

  • I agree wholeheartedly with you. The so called "fairytale" of her rise to fame was knocked squarely on the head by her own honesty, humility, and with genuine forthrightness rarely seen in the world of celebrity.

Being the author of, Harry Potter brought with it more than she could have possibly imagined. What we all know now to be self evident, she was solely instrumental in the movement of millions upon millions of young kids clambering to read again.

  • I really, truely, catogarically, bloodingly like this...

  • Great quote of Plutarch 1:14

  • i am happy for her

  • "people who have been kind enough not to sue me when i took there names for death eaters"

    ROTLF

She truly is inspiring, she will alway be my role model not just because she wrote my favorite books but because she is an unbelievable and inspiring woman

  • okay, you can't say the gay wizard joke will be the only thing you remember after that. (still I'll remember it, but that's not the point^^)

  • I actually started to clap myself xD

  • she should run for prime minister

  • That was such a wonderful speech! I'm actually inspired.

  • That might just have been the most inspiring and thruthful speech I've ever heard. Had I been there on that day and in that moment, had I listened to her words live, that would have been the greatest moment of my life.

  • amazing. the speech, jo, everything was just amazing. i am so proud to be one of the millions who have read her books, and have helped her out of poverty. her writing takes us out of poverty too - her books are a wonderful escape, and i thank her for giving it to us. she deserves a standing ovation a year long.

a truly inspiring speech, by a truly inspiring woman.

  • she's brilliant.

    amazing xD.

she's so inspiring and so funny.

    <3.

  • She is a genius!

  • That was outstanding. I mean, the speech was indescribably spectacular, but what really got me was her modesty. Despite being more famous than just about every living celebrity in the world, her speech wasn't about her. It was about those in need. But it wasn't done in some sort of, "I help people and so should you," manner. It was the most awe-inspiringly modest yet completely brilliant commencement speech I've ever heard. She's honestly one of the most important people of our generation.

  • truly inspiring, i'm lost for words.. just WOW !!

  • she is a wonderful human being

  • Wow! That was inspiring! J.K. Rowling is a brilliant woman and I hope that one day I can be as wise as she is.

  • wow. Im shocked honestly.

brilliant, and everyone in attendance benefited greatly from this speech.

  • yeah everyone except that annoying guy behind her left shoulder who couldn't sit still the last third was driving me nuts.

  • "We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. We have the power to imagine better."

Wow. Truly some of the greatest words I have ever heard. I am incredibly moved by her. She is magnificent.

  • this speech is amazing.

    jk rowling is an inspiration.

she gave a gift to this world.

  • Jo Rowling, you are a beautiful woman. Inside and out.

  • the wave at 6.36, that wave is to me... good lord.

  • i have about one million things to say about this but here are a few:

    1. she is brilliant. and it makes me practically salivate.

    2. i went to this speech,

3.i am jealous of her perfectly articulation.

    4. and of her genius.

    5. i was the one she waved at at the very end when everyone was supposed to be quet and it made me cry.

  • that brought tears to my eyes

    this is so inspiring

i agree with everyhing she says

and u can relate harry potter with almost everything she says:)

imagine being her daughter or son

  • Did you get a look at all those cheaters graduating! They were admitted and people 40 weren't.

  • "people who was kind enough to not sue me when i took their names for death eathers"

    Haha XD

ohh Jo.. you are funny but at the same time you give a wonderful speech! :)

  • such a beautiful speech.

  • I viewed this speech months ago and I've returned to let you all know that if you really apply what JK relates it can change your life. I began to make a lot of changes to my own life after watching this and for that reason I believe it is one of the most affecting speeches I've ever heard.

  • I'm crying right now.

    What an amazing speech!

  • An amazing speech.

  • She didnt reach those smooth upper class kids

  • Holy shit, they applauded for nearly 2 solid minutes...

  • wow...

  • "As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters"

    such a great quote!

  • She is a amazing author and speaker...Life is what you make it

  • Best speech I've ever heard and it made me cry. I feel a failure, I'm 29 years old, unemployed, back home with my parents but I dream of being a writer too.

  • Good luck. Don't give up! Remember, just because you're unemployed doesn't mean your value as a person has diminished. You're still a great person. :)

  • Thank you for your kind comment. :)

  • Best of luck with your dreams, Jo! :-)

  • i know. i went to this speech, and when she waves from her chair at the very end she was waving to me!!

i cried so hard, and agreed it is the best speech ive ever heard as well.

    and good luck with everything.

  • Brilliant speech. Never underestimate the power of imagination.

  • Truly the best speech I have ever heard.

  • Her inner beauty shines right through!

  • Excuse me? I am a "women?" Let me give you a quick grammar lesson, so you won't call someone "a women" in your new book. "Women" is plural. "Woman" is singular. I would be a "woman," not a "women."

If you believe that fiction is really that separate from reality, then you shouldn't be writing a book. The events in Harry Potter may not be real, but the lessons they teach us are.

  • You judge too quickly. I'm not a grown man. I'm a 17 year old kid. Secondly, any true writer would not be so quick to pronounce a "children's book" meritless. That the stories convey powerful messages about prejudice, courage, magnanimity, altruism has obviously eluded you. You see only silly spells, which is not the main point of the books. You're no writer. You're a fraud like Trelawney.

Voldemort did not value children's tales either. He paid for it dearly.

  • You call yourself a great writer and intellectual when you resort to childish ad hominem (personal attacks) arguments to try to refute a valid rebuttal?

  • MJED... No, I'm not JK, but I have learned a lot from her books. Maybe you should try listening to her messages.

  • MJED1978...It is not for you to judge what is bad or good character. Being imperfect yourself, as all humans are, you cannot make a judgment with absolute certainty that it is the truth. To place so much confidence on your judgment is to say that you are God, flawless and infallible.

Again, there is a distinction between advocating tolerance versus advocating homosexuality. Morality is complex, like Snape and Dumbledore, not black and white like your vision.

  • I'm sorry being gay is not an illness or a bad thing. I don't think we have to ''protect''children for learning about it. I also don't think telling a kid a fictional character is gay is going to make him choose to be gay. It's not something you become nor is it a choice, it's something that you are. People should learn to accept it so we're not living in an intolerant world like ours. The fact that you are so openly against it makes you, I'm sorry, the disgusting one.

  • that was the most amazing insparational speech ive ever heard

  • Another note, didn't you say you were going to blow out your brains with a gun, because people disagree with you? How ludicrous is that?

A true writer accepts that there will be anything but unanimous praise for his/her work. A true writer sees the infinitesimal complexities of life and portrays them in his/her work, channeling the experiences (through imagination, like Jo said) and opinions of others. You are intolerant of any opinion but your own. That's a trait of a shitty writer there.

  • More examples of facts...

    - You confused "nay," which means no, for "anyway."

    - You wrote a run-on sentence. "Thats just your opinion michealnrdx, as for..." You should've used a period or a semicolon, smarty.

To put it a bluntly in your Pulitzer Prize-winning terms (which include words like "bullcrap"), your English grammar SUCKS DICK!

  • Are you sure you know the difference between opinion and fact? Let me, the uneducated fool, attempt to clarify.

Opinion: a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty

Example: "I am a better writer than J.K. Rowling." The only grounds for that claim is that you vehemently believe it so. You have presented no valid reasons for your claim.

    Fact: reality or truth

    Examples:

    - You confused "right" for "write."

    - You spelled "michael" as "micheal."

  • You confuse promoting tolerance with advocating homosexuality. For such an alleged intellectual as yourself, you should see that there are distinct, but subtle difference between the two.

  • When you "right?" You mean when you "write." If you can make such a silly mistake, how can you call yourself a great writer?

  • Even J.K. Rowling never said her work was "good," instead only acknowledging that she is satisfied with it. She has the humility to admit that it may well be "rubbish" to some.

You cannot decide whether your work is good, because your personal biases will inadvertently cloud your judgment.

  • Ok, somehow, Youtube isn't letting me reply directly below the message, so I'm posting this again. This is to you, MJED1978. You think you're such a hotshot writer, but here you are writing shitty run-on sentences.

  • Shut up "bakla ka nga talaga". We don't really need english to be perfect.

  • Actually, MJED claims he's a superior writer. Therefore, it's logical to expect his English to be impeccable. For me, it's quite alright if I make silly grammar mistakes, because I don't claim to be a superior writer.

  • You just wrote a run-on sentence. It doesn't look like you're a very good writer.

  • You just wrote a run-on sentence. It doesn't look like you're a very good writer.

  • Why must you be better ? Can it even be proved that any writer is better than the other. Its all opinions, no truth. Who defines it? Now go think about that and get rid of your arrogance. Show respect for a fellow writer and dont come down on her success to bring u confidence. For that go get your self a publisher, and perhaps you will do well, and i wish u nothing but the best, mainly because i dont know you. But show her the respect you long for, then perhaps you will get it in return.

  • If your prosaic writing is anything like that which you present here, you're not going to succeed as a writer.

  • not how long it is, but how good it is...*bawls*...I have heard that so many times before...but it didn't really hit me 'til now...true enough miss rowling, true enough.

  • I said "...ANY work of art.." first of all. Secondly, you still haven't gotten over your own hubris. Only a reader can decide whether a book is a masterpiece. Millions of copies of Potter books didn't just fall out of the sky in multiple tongues-people read and liked the books and publishers wanted in, so they backed them. Where will you be if your books dont even get published? What if they are but they make no money? Do you think everyone who puts out a book instantly becomes a masterofenglish

  • Firstly, you missed the point of my previous statemet: only the READERS can determine whether or not a work is a masterpeice, not the author.

Secondly, your hubris really shines here. No publisher will drop millions of dollars to put millions of copies of books that wont sell, just because YOU like it.

Rowlings works sold in dozens of languages because people loved the work and publishers wanted a cut of profit. If you write your book but no one likes it, it wont matter what you think.

  • amazing.

  • She is a amazing author and speaker...Life is what you make it

  • You can't say whether or not a novel will be better than Harry Potter. Only the BUYERS can decide that. This woman has made more money with 7 books than Steven King with dozens, yet you somehow seem to know exactly how much better YOUR book is without even having it published yet. Isn't one of the key points in making any work of art is that it's a personal communication of ones own beliefs to the reader? Why do you have to step on someone elses toes to make YOUR work better by comparison?

  • Really? Where is your Billion-dollar book franchise and Harvard commencment speach. I don't think its a good idea for you to place your skills above someone who has accomplished extraordinary things in her lifetime without proof, as this makes the situation seem much more like you are just a schmuck with a big mouth and little to show for it. Point out your Septology of best selling novels and then we'll talk.

And for someone liked the speeach, you sure didn't get the message.

  • the awesome thing is she has NO idea how amazing she really is. she is truly a great person.

  • that was amazing.

  • She alluded to John Lennon's "Imagine" when she said, "we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better."

  • In need of the script of this speech, many thanks. : )

  • Thank you very much for this video. Lost for words. She's a genius.

  • i was the one screaming like crazy, after we were all supposed to be sitting, and i stood on my chair with my friends and when she waves at 6.37 that's to me!!!! ahhh!! it was so incredibly excititng.

  • I admire and thank her for recognizing the power and influence of the United States on the rest of the world and not downing it for all of its faults. For once, I hear someone from outside of our borders say something nice about our country. feels good...warmed my heart. Amazing woman.

  • She's SO amazing! Thank you for the upload! Thank you Ms. Rowling for the uplifting speech! Thank you!

  • Totoallly a wise woman!
