@Brotherofcats. they kick Big Dog while it is moving. This thing is standing still, let them push it when it is walk. This is still good technology. but to compare it to Big Dog is a case of apples and oranges .
If I were programming that robot.. I'd sneak in there in the middle of the night and load a program that made it look in the direction of the input (push) and ball up it's fist. (grin)
Then post the youtube video of the year to see the look on the guy's face as the robot shot him a look and got ready to clock him. (evil me)
I imagine in a few years we'll have a robot walking a tight rope just like a human... Then later, one that can free-run better than a human, and eventually soldiers will be replaced with acrobatic robots, at first there will be 1 reconnaissance robot, then in many years a whole army. I think you can see where I'm going with this.
The reason this video is silent and highly edited is to hide what really happened. Robot- "Please sir, I am private property and I will have to ask you to stop. I am quite expensive and you could damage me." Human- "Screw you. This is fun!" Robot- "Again, I must warn you.. this is rude and bordering on illegal. I cannot allow you to continue." Human- "What are you going to do about it?" Robot crushes the human's knee caps. Robot- "It appears that you have lost your balance, sir."
BD is self contained with its own power source not hooked up to cables and pneumatic hoses. and YES they are working on a two legged walker.
When this contraption can walk on its own unassisted then be kick in the ass and still maintain an upright stand then I'll be impressed. So far... I see no achievement here. But they should kept at it.
@creaturebotman i agree. its a shame that they have such a noisy engine on BD for the Hydraulics though.. BD will first relly impress me when the bipedal model is walking about.. then after that they might impress me even further if they make it quiet (unles meant to be noisy) and maybe a little more entelligent
Your right. its noisy. But given the technology and physic to make it all work the annoyance of the noise is tolerable. That's whats so remarkable about BD. They had to have a sufficient power source that could deliver and still have a power to weight ratio that allowed it to be carried. Its nosy but you can't beat the power weight ratio of a a gas powered engine. That's the real brilliance.
@creaturebotman yeah. aslong they are only going for transport and stuff like that, the noise isnt the big probleme either. but if they want to join the party of humanoids with the two legged one, they would have to find another efficient sulution. though im not sure they want to be a part of that party anyway.
Power required is power reqiured... I bet as these japanese team move forward you might just see them starting up a gas powered generator on their two legger too.
@creaturebotman i dont know about you.. but i wouldnt want a humanoid that sounds like an RC plane... its very not human.... unless u got something funny for supper last night...
@creaturebotman@creaturebotman well if a human could sneak up on you, why shouldnt a robot..? since they are kinda heavy they also have a punch in the step.. unles they use those plastic muscles which i cant remember the name of then you can also hear the electric engines and gears.. so it wont be noiseless.. but would be bearable
Makes you wonder how much longer until we're driving in mechs instead of cars. We're close to getting the walking down, now we just need a power source...
@Shadowbonez probably never. even if we could get the walking down, wheels will always be faster, more comfortable to ride and much more efficient since you only have to drive the wheels instead of loads of different joints. easier to fix and cheaper to build aswell :P
Beautiful. You guys must have some serious funding. I am assuming your robot is not kick resistant yet. I believe there is a DARPA sponsored "robodog" project that got further in that respect. Although it's balancing on 4 legs not 2. Either way very impressive. I presume next step is to solve more radical shifts in center of mass. Like a kick :P
who would be kicking their robots? after paying so much money for them, I doubt anyone would. no, they might perfect the balance a little more, but for the two legged ones, I think they're just going to get them to be able to stand back up if they get knocked over.. I already seen a couple different ones get back up like a human would.
that's not the point of what they are proving. look at how much he's shoving it continuously and rapidly. there is no other robot that can handle that much jostling without falling over. the tester is also applying forces on different parts of the robot's body rather than just on the robot's shoulders or chest. this is truly impressive.
because your a moron and cant see the true genius of this robot. its truely amazing at how they are able to achieve this. They are trying to mimic that way a human does this, and any intelligent person knows that the human body and how it works is soo complex and almost impossible to mimic. but they have come close and done an amazing job
"because your a moron..." First of all it's "you're" and second, your logic is utter fail. I don't give a shit what they try to mimic, it's still not impressive. GTFO the internet and an hero.
Sorry the fact that you are using the internet lingo "Fail" to correct me on a grammar subject. Is in fact an oxymoron, because in that same sense that i am using 'your' instead of 'you're', is the same for you. Using 'Fail' instead of illogical, or stupid, pointless, or ignorance, is contradicting your statement. You expect Youtube comments to contain proper grammar, you good sir, Fail. And you expect something like the ASIMO, or a human like robot.
But the fact of the matter is, that what they are accomplishing will in turn be a break through. Seeing as how ASIMO has the AI, this robot has the balance and almost a self preservation aspect, and the "Android" robots have the features. With those three breakthroughs there will be a true human-like android in the future.
What's not so impressive is that this robot is absolutely useless. Same goes for ASIMO. They both are very useless. Useless things are unimpressive. What good would they do for mankind? Make you life easier? no. They'd steal your jobs if they were "smart" enough.
The thing with most people is they fail to see the bigger picture. Everyone's looking at the little things, the "impressive" things. But when it all comes down, nobody knows what hit 'em. We're all so...Clumsy
well the asimo can kind of take the place of a seeing eye dog in certain tasks around the house, such as getting food and the like, and just helping out disabled people
ppl who fight with people about spelling and grammar on youtube are fuckin losers- if you wanna argue with someone, insert yourself into a random ass fight and call both sides fucking dumbasses-dumbass...
im assuming its trying to mimic a humans way of balancing, by shifting its weight using its muscles, since a gyro is really the only effective way we have of artificially making a "sense of balance" i would think so.
It's fun, though you know what's going to happen, if there are kids in the house, they are going to tackle the robot like they do people, jump on it like a football player, not nudge it politely on the shoulder or knee like the guy in the picture. So the robots will take some work to get to where they can take that kind of pummelling and really be our "buddies" and physical playmates. It would be fun to have one that really could be a kid's playmate, in some future incarnation.
We are teaching them to walk, the disaster will come when we teach them to kill.

Sure it can take a kicking... Sure it can self correct...
Because of all the cables and wire holding it up..
Try as hard as they might but the Japanese can't top Big Dog created by Boston Dynamics.
No matter how much they "Pretend" to kick it hard (Like the famous BD video clip)
Keep trying. Japan always surprises the world with cool looking robots.
