The guys at the dealership next to mine (no names dropped here) drained the oil without using the silicone turning a Lincoln into a fireball. Death Panels is a vivid, effective term recognizing rationing must occur in ANY economic system, including free markets, because of scarcity. In a free market, individuals self-ration via prices. In a centrally-planned system, presumptuous surrogates supplant their rationing decisions for the decisions of these individuals. The choice of receiving that medical treatment or not has been made by government. These are often life-and-death decisions, ergo Death Panel.
The only death panels that I know of are American private insurance companies who cancel the policies of their clients just before they're administered life saving treatments.

My dad was lucky. His liver cancer was detected during a follow-up exam of his gall bladder operation. The doctors couldn't save him with regular chemo (he was already in very poor health), but they did manage to extend his life nearly five years using an alternate treatment method!

C4C Dumb Economics: Any so-called stimulus program is a ruse. Government increases its spending only by reducing private spending equivalently. Whether government finances its added spending by hiking taxes, borrowing, or by inflating the currency, the added spending will be offset by reduced private spending. Plus, private spending's much more efficient than government spending replacing it because people act more carefully spending their own money than spending other people's money.

If the car was really worth more (not sure it was) then this just again shows the corrupting influence of government: Wealthy people often don't care about getting every dime of value when giving up a car. They're happy to pay for the convenience of a quick sale. Without the feds interfering, this Volvo could have ended up in the hands of a poorer person the rich guy knew and liked, for $4500 or less. Was the silicone solution poured into this one? It seemed like it took an awful long time to die. The guys at the dealership next to mine (no names dropped here) drained the oil without using the silicone turning a Lincoln into a fireball. It burned up a neighboring car and a brand new asphalt parking lot. If you are doing the clunker killing, BE SMART AND USE THE SILICONE!

The Invisible Hand was working beautifully until Obama's bailout. GM was on the verge of bankruptcy and that would have been the perfect solution. It would have divested those responsible for the inefficiencies of all their production assets and put those assets into the hands of more responsible parties. National health care programs will always have a few management issues; it's true of all nations that have it. But they all strive for the same goal: keeping the population alive and healthy for as long as possible.
As for the cars being scrapped, those are just machines; they can easily be replaced. But I must admit the "Cars for Clunkers" program seems bizarre from my perspective. It doesn't appear to either help or hinder your economy, but it does seem like a whole lot of work for nothing.

It's not a perfect system. Sometimes the health agencies do have to send patients to the States for treatment, all covered by our insurance. And the aging population is introducing new problems. But EVERYONE gets treated regardless of pre-existing conditions.

My dad was lucky. His liver cancer was detected during a follow-up exam of his gall bladder operation. The doctors couldn't save him with regular chemo (he was already in very poor health), but they did manage to extend his life nearly five years using an alternate treatment method!
Those were good years.

I oppose term limits in the House precisely because of Williams's brilliant idea. Limits---even in the Senate---would be completely unnecessary if the House could be made representative of the people again. It would fix all the trouble we have with special-interest lobbies.

American presidents don't have as much power as a lot of you think. Almost every bill or law that is passed in the US has to first go through congress and who ever else before it even gets to the president. Ultimately it was him that had the final say but he wasn't the mastermind behind it.
