Muskie should have been Vice President from 1969-1977 and President from 1977-1985.

Ed Muskie was a friend of my family. He was a college classmate of my mother and father at Bates College. I met him several times in social situations and even though I was a teenager at the time he was governor, I always admired him for what I perceived as his straight shooting, honest, trustworthy character. I believe we lost a wonderful man as president when he dropped out. Thank you for posting this, so I can see and hear him again as I remember him.

truckereleven: I knew Muskie, too. He had a volcanic temper, but could be charming and friendly when under control. His problem was his far-left mind-set. He would've been a disaster for the USA had his extreme agenda been enacted. But Ed may rule from the grave if the Obama platform is adopted.

His name name was Edmund Muskie, not Edward.
