Interesting video. I'm sure not all of Saginaw looks this bad. I used to live there when I was a kid in the 50's. On Warren St. and went to Martha Longstreet School. Is the school still there? I also lived on a street called Fitchu, but I heard an expressway gutted that area.
We used to hang out on Potter St, which was the black community(I guess), but it wasn't bad..lots of thriving businesses owned by blacks. I guess like most 'rustbelt' cities, industries left, things happen....

you should do places like pontiac, and especially flint, its the 3rd worst city to live in, in the nation do to violent crimes including murder, gangs, and poverty. I too have called Saginaw home at one point in my life. It is in bad bad shape..... They are no different than any northern town in the US that was dependant on the industrial industry (Flint (Mi), Dayton (Oh) Norwood (Oh), and the list goes on. This town will rise again.

Hey, they should have shown downtown. Last I was there, all the street corners have blinking yellow lights. They don't even bother to change from red to green. It's a shame, because in the '60s, when I hung out there all the time, downtown was a busy place! Now, it's a ghost town.

It's true that Saginaw has some nice areas. I live in Saginaw Township and it's lovely. That being said, the City of Saginaw is a distressed, economically depressed area. What does it say about us when we think the problems in the city don't matter because, "hey, at least my part of town is nice?" I want all of Saginaw to be a place to be proud of, not just the 'burbs. This footage is accurate, and though it doesn't represent all of Saginaw, we can't just pretend that it isn't real.

I was born in Saginaw back in 1986, lived there off and on and now I'm in Ohio due to my father working at GM, and I must say from when I was a child living on the eastside ghetto to being a teenager young adult living on George St. in the township, they are two different worlds. But every city (St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, Youngstown, Ohio) is like Saginaw because it was affected by the rustbelt. So I wish people would not give the city a bad rap when the rest of the midwest is similar.

I have a love hate relationship with Saginaw. I'm from Chicago but spent plenty of summers up there. As a child I enjoyed visiting my grandparents, uncle, and cousins. I loved the fact that people are always friendly...You don't really see much of that in Chicago. I still have a few relatives up there. My family is from Buena Vista and lived on 25th and Perkins. I went up there this past summer and it was horrible. Our family house has been destroyed by vandals.

i grew up in the early 80s in Saginaw down by Court St. I have moved away but still consider it my home. Whenever i go back, alot has changed: crime,empty houses,dirty streets. But it is still my home. I miss the old days. That video is just negative. There is still alot of good to show about the town.
In my opinion, Saginaw is the best city in Michigan. There are many places to fish, like 10 parks and there are no shootings in the parks and its not a gritty industrial city, we have an awesome hockey team called the "Saginaw Spirit" and the White Pine Middle school won an award called "schools to watch". Only a hand full of schools got that award. We also have a wrestling team with a perfert season. Also its not full just ethnicity, it is a diverse city. saginaw high won many district awards

This is the Saginaw I saw when I went there to visit my Dad's family. He grew up on the East side. It was sad going back with him because I could see the potential in the area. The reason why Saginaw fell apart was because of racism by whites, and economic exploitation by Dow and GM. Whites in the suburbs could move downtown and start spending money and create a shared community...but racism and pessimism won't let that happen. Blacks are not the problem...no jobs and backward thinking are.

Interesting video. I'm sure not all of Saginaw looks this bad. I used to live there when I was a kid in the 50's. On Warren St. and went to Martha Longstreet School. Is the school still there? I also lived on a street called Fitchu, but I heard an expressway gutted that area.
We used to hang out on Potter St, which was the black community(I guess), but it wasn't bad..lots of thriving businesses owned by blacks. I guess like most 'rustbelt' cities, industries left, things happen....

you should do places like pontiac, and especially flint, its the 3rd worst city to live in, in the nation do to violent crimes including murder, gangs, and poverty. I too have called Saginaw home at one point in my life. It is in bad bad shape..... They are no different than any northern town in the US that was dependant on the industrial industry (Flint (Mi), Dayton (Oh) Norwood (Oh), and the list goes on. This town will rise again.

Hm... The ugly reality of Saginaw Indeed. I was born and raised on the Eastside, Saginaw High Graduate of 08'. Alot of footage in this video are very very familiar to me, near my house actually. This chaotic disturbing barren wasteland is in fact Saginaw unfortunately... So what about the townships? Yeah, it's nice but who can afford a living there? Don't mean crap compared to this. Hey, they should have shown downtown. Last I was there, all the street corners have blinking yellow lights. They don't even bother to change from red to green. It's a shame, because in the '60s, when I hung out there all the time, downtown was a busy place! Now, it's a ghost town.

It's true that Saginaw has some nice areas. I live in Saginaw Township and it's lovely. That being said, the City of Saginaw is a distressed, economically depressed area. What does it say about us when we think the problems in the city don't matter because, "hey, at least my part of town is nice?" I want all of Saginaw to be a place to be proud of, not just the 'burbs. This footage is accurate, and though it doesn't represent all of Saginaw, we can't just pretend that it isn't real.

I was born in Saginaw back in 1986, lived there off and on and now I'm in Ohio due to my father working at GM, and I must say from when I was a child living on the eastside ghetto to being a teenager young adult living on George St. in the township, they are two different worlds. But every city (St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, Youngstown, Ohio) is like Saginaw because it was affected by the rustbelt. So I wish people would not give the city a bad rap when the rest of the midwest is similar.

I have a love hate relationship with Saginaw. I'm from Chicago but spent plenty of summers up there. As a child I enjoyed visiting my grandparents, uncle, and cousins. I loved the fact that people are always friendly...You don't really see much of that in Chicago. I still have a few relatives up there. My family is from Buena Vista and lived on 25th and Perkins. I went up there this past summer and it was horrible. Our family house has been destroyed by vandals.

I grew up in Sag. There are still people there that care. If people on the eastside want changes, start small.If you rent keep your places clean and fixed up.You may not own it but it's yours while you're living in it.If you have a vacant lot next to you, mow the grass. Go to these neighborhood meetings and see what you can do to help make a difference. Make sure you care enough about your kids to keep their buts out of the streets. Stress EDUCATION. Go to church. Too bad I don't have more room.

i grew up in the early 80s in Saginaw down by Court St. I have moved away but still consider it my home. Whenever i go back, alot has changed: crime,empty houses,dirty streets. But it is still my home. I miss the old days. That video is just negative. There is still alot of good to show about the town.

In my opinion, Saginaw is the best city in Michigan. There are many places to fish, like 10 parks and there are no shootings in the parks and its not a gritty industrial city, we have an awesome hockey team called the "Saginaw Spirit" and the White Pine Middle school won an award called "schools to watch". Only a hand full of schools got that award. We also have a wrestling team with a perfert season. Also its not full just ethnicity, it is a diverse city. saginaw high won many district awards

This is the Saginaw I saw when I went there to visit my Dad's family. He grew up on the East side. It was sad going back with him because I could see the potential in the area. The reason why Saginaw fell apart was because of racism by whites, and economic exploitation by Dow and GM. Whites in the suburbs could move downtown and start spending money and create a shared community...but racism and pessimism won't let that happen. Blacks are not the problem...no jobs and backward thinking are.
