  • best bassist on z planet

  • shame he's a complete cunt

  • You can do anything with any instrument, as long as you're good, like Tom for example.

  • this is really my all-time favourite jenkinson, too bad i saw him once in brussels with the introduction of the last cd and he didnt perform this one, damn shame

  • it's definitely fretless. Those are merely lines, not frets, you can tell by the smooth slides and the distinctive growl. (could be a conversion) You'd hear stair-stepping in the slides if there were frets.Frets would reflect the stagelights, also.

  • it's definitely fretless.

  • those pants. srsly wtf lol.

  • funny how squarepusher calls himself squarepusher, yet his bass guitar doesn't have any squares to push. It's fretless

  • oh NO he didnt. this is ridiculoussssssss

  • Comment removed

  • thats a real talent ! he used jaco's bass stile so clever. and his music is just so great progressive and difficult

  • Love the SP when he's doing musical stuff like this which is brilliant, but the belches, blips and bleeps grate on my nerves pretty quickly.

  • SICK! (that's all I gotta say) =)

  • its not about being rich, if some of you punk ass wannabes got off your azzez and maybe got a job, you could afford this shit, if all you have is a computer dont bitch about it, because it doesnt matter if you have the skill than it doesnt matter what the fuck you use, to behonest, in this day in age, its stupid to NOT use a computer...

  • hes fuckin ridiculous. waaaaaaaaaayyy underrated!

  • @tgeer123 I like him underrated

  • so bad ass

  • Very impressed!!!

  • i know aphex twin is considered the king, but sometimes i think that tom should have that title, i mean because that shit is just prodigious on every level musically, I mean look at the guy, its like watching a ufo landing its so unreal

  • afx isn't the king in my book... the tuss is! I like the tuss more than aphex twin sorta. I prefer squarepusher for live-sounding stuff, autechre for more computery shit, and aphex twin for accessible human creepiness.

  • King of what though? I have never heard Tom make anything en par with Analord, NOR have heard mad Richard make anything en par with Just A Souvenir (The next to say that album is shitty, gets a boot through their fucking head!)

Lets all agree that they are both amazing at doing what they do.

  • funkalicous!!!

  • man what happened to the old mtv ):

  • good.. fuckin..question

  • rap?

  • they got rid of music :/

  • yes they did.

  • im sorry but... being able to play a fretless, in the dark, with flashing lights and loud background music... takes some ridiculous skill

  • @1Meursault1 In your pajamas too...

  • Fucking awesome. He can genuinely do everything with music.

  • @1Meursault1 Not picking holes but I think that it isn't fretless, Not saying it's any less impressive though. It's just a low quality vid, I think if you check the flash at 1.21 you can clearly see its frets

  • @TransformerMusic You may well be right, I still believe it to be fretless though. I have a fretted Fender Jazz and it sounds very distinct from his which leads me to believe it is a fretless, particularly all those ridiculous slides.

  • this is one of my favourite pusher tracks but I must say I have heard him play much better than this live in the past, he's quite sloppy in this performance....

  • i almost like hearing that. i don't wanna wonder if it's dubbed. i like this :)

  • Bass face! LOL.

  • This shows why bassists make the best arrangers. Once you get out of the background, it's the most expressive stringed instrument as it (especially fretless) has the ability to bridge rhythm, lead, and percussive elements. Can't do that with a guitar.

  • he plays the bass like no other. The proggression he makes is alot more of a leading role than a back bone. I dont know if its bassists, the pusher is a genius. Im into BassNectar the Aphex twin, blockhead, rjd2, autechre all this shit really, still jenkinson is my favoraite by far.

  • except you can do that with any instrument...

  • @cmglandt just my opinion but you can do that with any instrument if you practice enough

  • @theashdude Yeah but who elts plays bass and is also a DJ?

  • @cmglandt Plus the low end power to shake every booty in da hows.

    Thanks to the bass.

  • @cmglandt

Yeah Tom really planted seeds for a culture of musician/bassist.

As a bassist and a growing musician, Tom has been an idol.

He showed that there isnt a thing the bass cant do. You can play it melodically, rhythmically ,percussively, any way. And that fact means that you can do anything with just the bass.

  • @cmglandt you can do it with a guitar......

  • @3510211 You cant rock da rump as good as a bass can.

  • Reggie Wooten (among many) would beg to differ. But yes squarepusher is incredibly expressive.

  • @cmglandt You can totally do all that with guitar, it's just that most guitarists don't focus on certain techniques.

  • old school squarepusher jazzisms.

  • Dammit, i'd LOVE to do stuff like this. I'm pretty much the same standard bass-wise, and can write music until the cows come home, but it's the programming of beats that I have NO idea about. I tried Ableton, but it gave me a nosebleed. I'm old-school in the sense of the typical "band" enviroment, rather than programmed stuff like this. I love it. If any one creates D&B, but wants real bass over the top, please give me a shout!

  • you're a man after my own heart. i feel your pain :)

  • I find reason very user friendly. Thats what I use in my live set up.

  • use Kinetic 2 from sony. it'll take a while to understand but it's great for drums. it has so many samples from drum breaks like amen and the step recording lets you get really accurate (down to 128th beats!) It does melody too, but it's tough... i can make some dnB loops, post them on my soundclick profile and you can download them.

  • A good friend of mine got me back in to FL Studio. Fruity Slicer is amazing. Just upload a break and chop it up to hell. You can do alot of pitch bending and chopped rolls. Its amazing. I'm working on a track right now. It'll be my first using FL Studio. I'll be sure to give you a heads up once its done if you're interesting. It'll be ambient dnb!

  • check out Renoise. it's amazing for cutting up and sequencing breaks.

  • Well, it all depends on what gives you the best workflow. Try all the major ones, and use the one(s) that works best for you. I use a combo of Renoise and FL.

  • it's like anything in this world. have a dream, do a bit of research, get some practice in, learn to love what you're doing and you'll pick up beat programming like you picked up learning to walk.

  • he programs them with his bass using a midi pick up. so he is the drummer. he is going on tour with a human drummer soon by the way.

  • I don't think he does in his early stuff. There are slap pop bongo sounds and stuff like that, but all his early stuff is boss dr660 and akai sampler for beats. early shows he mostly played to a backing track, not that theres anything wrong with that...

  • Jojo Mayer has accomplished this very well. You should probably check 'em out.

  • i find that using fruity loops as a sequencer and using komplete 5 among millions of other vst's for effects and everything else gets you the best sounds you can get out of digital. if your rich go buy an assload of analog gear and hibernate in your room for years and youll be squarepusher!

  • favourite trak on the album 5*

  • 2:07 is the real deal

  • 2:07 is straight funky.

  • The hook at 2:07 > - fucking insane.

  • He has literally ALWAYS been good. Everything that he has ever done has been the best in its respective genre. F*ck I love it.

  • What dimension was this, how could this have been on mtv? Mtv only plays bullshit. How is this possible?

  • too true

  • Probably in the middle of the night, nobody watching. Shame.

  • sounds like people's court and hawaii five-o gone porn.

    no, i kid

    squarepusher is god.

  • greatmusicpusher

  • Wow, back in the day when MTV used to play music, and good music at that. Things have certainly gone downhill for that network.

Anyways, Squarepusher has been praised backwards and forwards and sideways and diagonally, so there's not mucho more for me to say.

    <3

  • well, maybe that he was only 22 at the time... *sigh*... I'm worthless... ;)

  • Quality stuff, excellent bass, what more needs to be said...

  • dude's a genius. in every possible way.

  • i have this song on a cd

    real good

  • Man that song is so awesome. I like that funky bass.

  • Squarepusher wins at bass. And music.

Seriously though, this man is a bloody genius. Can't wait for a new record, whenever he decides to put one out.

  • Jenkinson rules.

  • cool stuff

  • Great stuff. Kinda reminds me of Percy Jones..Is this on a studio release?

  • Yes, album is called Hard Normal Daddy (1997)

  • Omg this is ferking nice...

Ashamed its taken me this long to stumble across..

    Cheers for the Up.!

  • thanks for the video!

  • magnificent

  • a true genius

  • how is he a cunt exactly?

i for one think hes dead original and dead cool

  • best squarepusher live vid i seen yet!!

  • such funky style!

  • squarepusher's an intelligent musician, he's the mac on bass.makes the most tech but easy listenin music. you can tell he's not a drug up when you watch his interviews. he's pretty much a genius.

  • MTV is for suckers. All they do is have jojo sing through a expensive piece of equipment and give everyone skimpy clothes.

  • and Square pusher ripping shit on the bass like none other.

  • Amazing stuff My Pusher, I too do a bass thing like this on my youtube page! Not as good as this of course

  • Squarepusher fukin rules

  • you guys dont get it drugs have nothing to do with it and they cant create it its innate and your born with you just gotta leanr how to use it, drugs BLAH FUCK DRUGS!!!

  • drugs can help to bring it out if you've got part of the picture but not quite the whole thing ...

don't say fuck drugs, they can really help if you don't take them like candy

  • I agree. Or at least I WILL agree in about 15 years. :-P

  • i saw this guy with six comuters..by himself playin live in a club in canada. my god drugs get you good

  • food is a drug. so it god.

  • this guy is awesome

  • old MTV...

  • Since when does MTV play music?

    Great song and video, though.

  • About ten years ago they did. Good times.

  • I wanna watch more videos of this live.

    Anyone please upload !!

  • Sounds like an SNES or Genesis game music.

  • Nice Anthrax T-shirt

  • ketamine?))

    PCP?

    DXM&

    diss

    genius musicant

  • Squarepusher is awesome

  • God damn, if you don't see this guy's genius, you need your head examined. Just try making music as amazingly complex and still maintain it's melody, structure and shape. THEN you can criticise. Maybe.

  • There is no way anyone can ever want to downsize somebody as good as Squarepusher. I double defy someone to test his skills.

  • I agree with you but he doesnt really hold a deity status with me. Dont get me wrong, hes sick.

  • Check out a song called deep fried pizza, you wont regret it. You might, if you're a b*stard.

  • yeah deep fried pizza is pretty good!

  • listen to Port Rhombus...it's as genius as it gets.

  • P.s This music will never make you cry. unless your a bass player lol

  • Well I'm quite on the verge of crying here ROTFL... What he plays, technically, musically... You know it's just untouchable by the human mind, esp his music... 'S what I believe... Just wow.

  • Youre quite right, we should all listen to snow patrol

  • i don't regard squarepusher as a musical genius at all. In fact his music is musically similar to lift music especially how hes composes it. Its all to do with the tones he uses for me and how he gets a computer to sound like something real and in ya face. i do love him though. the only dance music i listen to

  • Maybe not a musical genius, but hes definately a something genius, or at least about as genius as you can be in todays worl with T.V. and shitty no brainer distractions.

  • no Tom Jenkinson is a musical genius

  • I have played bass for 15 years and up until recently had never heard of this guy. He is a tasy bass player and does some really amazing stuff with his homemade gear. Nice work Pusher!!!

  • Why did he show up in his pyjamas? :) I'm tempted to make a dig at the haircut, but I'll spare the insult and pay a compliment to him instead. Simply put, his music rocks this world.

  • hahaha

  • When the Pusher is being musical like this he can't be touched by anyone on the planet.... all the other blips and bleeps D&B stuff I can't handle...but THIS? Pure genius. Unequalled.

  • lol wearing an anthrax shirt- why is squarepusher so fucking awesome?

  • Coopers World is a classic track! So awesome! <3

  • no doubt sweet video... and probably some sweet drugs too:)

  • can't believe this is soon 10 f*in years ago..

  • This man is nothing short of a genius.

Most underrated bass player of all time.

  • = teh f*cking daddy!

  • Wow, TJ plays a LOT of bass on this early one!

  • simply amazing

  • Oh my fucking god. this is incredible.

  • thanks for posting that.. i wish he played out more often. a genius in the true sense of the word

  • sick!

  • Tom is a genius.

  • and weatherkop is a geniousmeter
