There is actually very little to no hard evidence that women served as warriors in either celtic or pictish society. Their are only a few vague instinces were women fought as in sort of last ditch effort, not unllike soviet women in world war 2 serving as partisans, but they did not belong to the actual class of warriors in the celtic or pictish society. For example, the celtic warriors were customarily buried with their weapons. But as of to date, no armaments have been found in a womens grave.
A general from the worlds greatest army defeated by a village girl. I'm not of Roman descent. I am of Illyrian. But if a company is going to make a movie with the Roman Army/Empire, they need to get their facts straight and pay some real respect. For this scene would fit a porno film better.
@Reno2324 You obviously haven't seen this movie, and I'm pretty sure that "Village Girl" would probably kill your sorry ass if Gun hasn't been invented.
@RoyalDog214 You are a 24 karat idiot. I'm referring to real life roman generals, not the idiot movie director. This bitch in the movie did not exist. Roman generals did, they were the best of the best and no motherfucker in this earth could stand against them including the almighty praetorians. Fucking kid, go get some sleep and get ready for school.
@Reno2324 You're also forgetting the fact that the Roman General was tortured, starved, deprived when he was fighting her. And it's not like he lost easily, you could see him fatiguing during the duel, even though lasted awhile.
And it's not like the "Village Girl" was weak, most tribes during that time were Hunter Gatherer, so it's most likely she spent several years hunting deer and learning about combat skills.
Next time you feel the need to insult me, do your own homework first. Kid.
im irish gaelic and i think this is based upon what happened in my clan, the romans went to wipe thm out but a maid (wife of the leader of the clan stood up to the general) the general smacked her down and proceeded to rape her but she got up and took a spear and killed him in ther fight thn killed his soldiers only clan in ireland to do so to stand up to a legion and defeat thm
The ongoing argument between fucked-up weird ass 40+ year old historian geeks about which land / language is better and what happened / what didn't happen is done. If I happen to see anymore of that sad, pathetic shit commented on this video you get blocked & your comment gets removed.
Take a peek CompleteCarnage99--Last week,Senator McCarthy appeared on this program to correct any errors he might have thought we made in our report of March 9th. Since he made no reference to any statements of fact that we made, we must conclude that he found no errors of fact.He proved again that anyone who exposes him, anyone who does not share his hysterical disregard for decency and human dignity and the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, must be either a Communist or a fellow traveler.
@slideharp1 I got the comment. Thank you slideharp1. I would like to keep in touch. I subscribed. Nice people are scarce these days. I will send an email through Youtube. There are still nice people. :) Talk to you later.
@CompleteCarnage99 When you attack someone personally instead of the argument, effectively you are saying the person you are critiquing is correct. And that person is me. Read a book. Watch Edward R. Murrow depicted in Good Night and Good Luck. You are not a nice or happy person. Someone said "crackhead" or "piss-taking" to refer to someone not being able to handle what I am saying. I think that person is right.I will try to find Edward R. Murrow's quote on this topic.
@Thecrazyeditor You fucking psycho, weird ass piece of shit. I didn't attack you personally you came on my video leaving about 15 comments in a row like some fucked up guy with down syndrome. All I said was "are you drunk or something"
You're getting blocked, damn mental patient. Go get help you old senile bastard.
The history of a language is complex. Actually, the history of all languages is complex. Arrogant to say one language is inferior to another language. Sounds ethnocentric. I can't find the word for what I am trying to say, because I am "inferior." :)
I see. The poster of the video was the main person I saw making nasty comments. Are you gay and are you a nerd? "Not that there is anything wrong about it. Not at all."
Notice how antejutronicthing doesn't know his first contention from his last and can say something that directly contradicts Itself?. Here's a prick saying English is 50%Latin, courtesy of the French who wormed their way into England on the backs of the Vikings of Normandy to be part of the "Lords of the Land", having nothing to do with the English populace who lived their Own lives, IOW, the class system. He then points out that the country was settled by Germanics/Vikings....who spoke French?
Which is why today in Scotland, a large part of our heritage today is Scotti and Pict, which is our original settlers. That's why what you just stated there is false.
@ScottMcK9 I gave your comment an extra thumbs-up, But - the Scotti, according to Roman sources, were a people in North Ireland who "colonized" the south-western portion of Caledonia and eventually the name was attached to the whole country. It was close to the same time as the Angles did the same in what became England i.e. when the Romans pulled out.
@gyrofoam1 Historians are saying that the Scotii could've ben indigenous to our land, because the theory that they came in from Ireland is that the Scotti massacred the Picts, if that had been the case, why is most our heritage today, strongly Pictish? So it's an interesting subject, Scotti people could've came from Ireland, then again, an interesting theory suggests they were already part of the land, indigenous, just living on a different part of it. The theory you state though could be true!
@ScottMcK9 I'd read of the Scotti being a folk in NE Ireland - who then became described as the folk in SW Scotland, having invaded and settled there, and it eventually becoming the name by which it was called. I think the sources were originally Roman. In Irish histories it's referred to as the colonisation of Alba (Albion, Gallic?) and was the first half of the 6thC - can't remember the date but it was less than a century after the Germanic invasions in the south.......
@gyrofoam1 The problem with that theory however mate, and what makes other historians say otherwise, is that most of our heritage today is Pictish. The claim that the Scotti invaded from Ireland is that they wiped out the Picts, they never. Certain historians now claim that they could may well have been original settlers to our land. Although we'll never know for definite. One thing can be said however, our people came from the Basques, blood proves that. High chances are, if from Scotland or...
@gyrofoam1 It's to do with a time period, after the Ice Age melted over, three small pockets from the south survived, one of which was from the Basque Region of what is now known as Spain, thus moved up into Britain after the ice started to lift. That's where our dark features, dark hair and eyes comes from. The Picts could may well have spoken a Basque language, they don't know. Interesting point about the Iberian though, I couldn't say who they were, but would be an interesting book to read.
@ScottMcK9 The Basque have dark features? Northern Spaniards have dark skin and dark eyes?? can you please browse on google and type in basque or asturians or galicians. Iberians are pure Spaniards hence the Iberian peninsula. Type in Santander, type in Aragon. See Spaniards have dark features. Better yet come to Spain. Yes southern Spaniards are more moorish, but still the authentic Iberians are white. I am from Spain and I find your comment very offensive.
@gyrofoam1 ...or Ireland (like the Scotti) then there's without doubt, our people have been around on these lands from the time after the Big Freeze 11,000 years ago, perhaps even 14,000 years ago, depends.
@ScottMcK9 ....I only ever found One book about the Picts. There are loads about the Celts and they're all called "The Celts". It's a real old one from a real old shop in New Orleans, called 'The Pictish Nation, It's People and it's Church' by Archibald Scott. I posted this to another guy and he went and downloaded it from google books. There are several maps with Picts being located in lots of specific regions, Lowlands and Highlands - parts of northern England too..after the English
@gyrofoam1 Haha, I just thought of the Caledonians - no doubt you know it was called Caledonia - but I've also seen regions where 'caledonians' was written as the lands where they lived, the folk who inhabited the places. So there must've been a lot of land bargaining or aggro if it came to it, prob'ly did. No doubt the Clans evolved from all this.
@gyrofoam1 The name Caledonia was the name the Romans gave our land, 'Caled' meaning 'hard rocky land' or 'hard fought people', our people known as the Caledonii. But aye that's how the land got it's name, it's a Romanticised name for what our land was to become. The Picts soon adapted to the name as being called Scots, thus is why they moved forward with that name and culture. It was Kenneth McAlpin who formed and united our people as who we are today, to fight the south instead of each other.
@ScottMcK9 It's easy to see why the Romans weren't more than curious about venturing further and heading to Ireland, tho' it was contemplated a few times. Naming it Hibernia wasn't a compliment. 'Land of eternal Winter'. If you were from the Med. would you be excited about the idea?
@gyrofoam1 True, saying that, they never had maps, they may not even have known there was an Island there. The main reason they ventured north is because they first settled for resources, when attacked, then then set off north to basically wipe us all out. But because of Scotland's rough terrain and people, it showed why after 500 years we remained unconquered and free. Their main concentration was the main land, and after fighting Scotland that long, they eventually gave it up and went home...
@ScottMcK9 Yeah, right. One thing tho', the Greeks had maps before the Romans did. And before that, the 'Islands at the end of the Earth' were well known to the Phoenicians who traded mainly for tin. In "The war diaries of Caesar" there's an easily recognisable and detailed map on the first page. The conquest of the north got to a point where there was a ? about why they wanted it. Britain was invaded mainly because the people had 'aided' the Gauls and was the seat of Druidic Europe.
@gyrofoam1 You're right about why they invaded, but it's not the reason they invaded Scotland, I can tell you that for a fact. They invaded Scotland because the Romans done business with Britagnnia Clan, attacked the Welsh and the Britagnnia turned their back on them, the Romans set about wiping them out, and of course, they then decided it was time to march north and wipe out the rest of our people, but of course, they failed after 500 years at war with Scotland.
@gyrofoam1 And we all know about the Ancient Greeks, in fact one of their explorers had travelled the coast line long before the Romans, there's even a Greek coin been found in Scotland to prove there had been trade long before it.
@gyrofoam1 I do have a belief though that our people could may well have came from the land of Hibernia, because we're a similar people in that sense.
@ScottMcK9 The original settlers were Picts the Scots eventualy conquered all Scotland the reason why is called Scotland not Pictland! The Romans estabalish trade and comerce with local peoples it wasnt always war "Picts" or whatver the peoples north of wall apraice Roman things many cloths and clay are found from Roman Culture and of course Roman coins are also found north of the wall. The Vikings mingle with Scots a reason why you have Norse-Gaels.
@antejutronic As for the English language influenced in Scotland with Scandinavian, that was adopted in Scotland, not forced upon us, have that for facts.
@antejutronic You seem angry-testy.#2--What is the other 25%?I don't want to read the book. #1--simplistic view of language.Uniquely American.Or where are you from? #3--I hate this type of fraction or stupid percentages. For example, 99.99999%-usually bullshit. #4--Screw you."Who speak"--not you.And not proper English. Not much reading going on there.Don't be rude. Thanks for the bad history lesson. #4--"did the Celtic Britons survived?" Bad use of grammar from the expert.
A lot of the words you use today descend from Gaelic. Also, Swiss, Austrians and Bavarians are descending from Celts as well as Portuguese and Spanish. French and English are german/celtic languages. Like all modern languages it lends a lot from latin/old greek but it"s surely not 50% latin.
Ireland and Scotland were not conquered by the Romans. And the vikings also could not fully conquer them. And normans by the way were christian vikings.
Poor Britons, don't have nothing more than fantasies (as the French with Asterix) about defeating Rome - Reality is that the Romans kicked their blue-painted asses so bad, that today the only ones that speak Celtic are some minorities between the Welsh, Irish and Scots... The huge majority in the isles speak today a mix of 50% Latin and 25% Germanic, or what we call today "English".
@antejutronic I dont buy that, even in England Celtic languages were still spoken, in the "old North". Most of Scotland, and all of Wales and Ireland were all dominated by Celtic languages until recently. Fuck im Canadian and I have Great Grandparents that were fluent in Gaelic, so yea the Romans can suck a big blue cock, no one I know today speaks anything similar ancient Latin, English is predominantly a mix of Anglo-Saxon and norman french, witch is Vulagr latin, not Roman Latin.
@antejutronic the only Roman esc influence in English is the recently added Scientific words, witch were added to English not by Romans but the English themselves.
@mothman64 Telephone, Telegraph, Teleport, Telegram, Hydraulic, Hydroponic, Aeroplane, Interview, there's an endless list of English words which are compound words derived not only Latin but Greek also, probably a reasonably equal measure of each. We've always taken the Greek and Latin root-words to name a new invention, discovery, syndrome, etc. They weren't given to the English by some asshole from France. Don't bother about antejutronic-thing - he just can't deal with what he is.
@antejutronic Face it, you really don't have a clue, do you?. In fact you just made the entire thing up out of thin air. 50% Latin?...like what, any examples?
@gyrofoam1 The languages of the majority of europe have some basis of Latin. However English has the widest variety of languages as a basis, on grounds of it contains elements of Celtic, Nordic, Germanic, Gualic and Latin. As well as some greek thrown in.
@darkshardshoots We learned German at school. It was obvious to all that most of the common root-words we use today are German in origin. I also found, when I lived in Holland, how many words and, more importantly, pronunciation were from that branch of the language.Nordic is a Germanic language also, and is more influential as pronunciation. My dad's folks were from Durham - Nordic pronunciation. Re. Celtic: maybe you can come up with a few examples as I don't hear them myself.
Lucky for him that Julius Caesar, after he'd just conquered NW Europe with 60,000 men, didn't go further north - his entire army would've been annihilated by Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
In real life... he would have swung one punch at her... and snapped her face... bitch would of been on the floor crying like a hoe and he'd of fucked all them barbarians up....
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX awww well arnt you nice. :) i was simply pointing out that its a shame u clearly havent botherd to look up any information on fighting styles let alone leart those styles and compared the effectivness.
How in the world did a fight between a Roman and a Pict turn into an argument over which European country in the world has the most military power in the 21st Century?
@slideharp1 I don't get why you would say this movie is only for white boys.. It is about one of the, if not the most powerful Empires known to man kind, whether you like it or not. I think you don't like it because you're apperantly British (I looked at your channel) and this movie in a way glorifies Rome. What I do not understand, is why you would bring the 'whiteboy' thing in here...
@slideharp1 White woman have always historically been crazy fucks. Cuchulain was taught to fight with a Sword by a woman from Scotland. Your comment screams personal experience.
@mothman64 Cuchulain is a Legend - tho' he was based on a real leader. Like most tales of ancient Ireland, his prowess as a warrior is absurdly exaggerated. Here's a man who threw a spear that ten men couldn't lift, then after he'd thrown it, he'd jump on and ride/guide it towards the enemy.
@gyrofoam1 Being trained by a female in those times dose not seem to unbelievable to me though. Back in the Iron Age everyone had to be bad ass in order to survive.
@mothman64 Back in the Iron Age, bub, men killed each other and took their women. This is a CGI movie, not an historical documentary - Of Course 'it doesn't seem unbelievable to you!!' - now go read some history.
@gyrofoam1 I never claimed to give historical credence to the twig woman killing an injured roman, I read plenty of history and know it's a fact that warrior woman existed in that time, the Amazonian's that the Romans describe, were Sarmatian's.
@gyrofoam1 What does some Iceni bitch and a shitty american show about female vampire hunters have to with anything, Im saying the fucker complaining about puny white boys being pussy whipped is in reality the pussy white boy being pussy whipped.
@CompleteCarnage99 Well I don't know. I won't say everything about homosexuality. I myself have dated women but I came to look at your video. I don't know why people have to be rude about it. There was nothing wrong with your video. I was also a bit of a nerd/am actually. I could find homosexual nerds that would comment nicely. Give me some time. :)
Evilscotsmin, I agree with you about Rome and what all it did. I have a lot of Scottish blood in me of which I am very proud. I was merely commenting on the two individuals fighting, not their countries, or what cause was right, etc.. But yes, I often wonder what Europe would have turned out like had not Rome destroyed the Celtic way of life, their culture, society, everything.
Real brave bad ass, killing a soldier who is already weakened and wounded. I bet if he was not wounded and weakened from fighting and loss of blood he would have killed that skinny girl right off!
@DMEII real brave like rome when it rapes and kills and steals with its WELL TRAINED army invading places for no reason other than to enpower them selfs ..they came to scotland and got fucked .like everyone ells who tryed : ).
Isn't anyone else sick and tired of movies where warriors are played by girls with stick-thin arms? That spear was probably empty inside, made especially for her. Come on, she doesn't even look like a fighter! Was Cynthia Rothrock the last female martial artist? I am sick of this constant make-believe... :)
The way the actress playing her is built makes this scene comical to me. She has barely any muscle mass for even a woman. In reality he would get close and easily overpower her with her long rendered useless due to its length. Shes obviously nimble, but in many parts of this fight she throws the general around like someone double or triple her size with no apparent technique to make up for that disadvantage.
@KrazyKommieKiller In real life the general would have won. Men are physically stronger than women, a Roman general was highly trained and disciplined, and despite the fact that the general in the movie was already weak from what happened before he still would have won, it was a close quarters battle and she had a STAFF
@DargorV when is rapping and killing and stealing from unequipped men woman and child considered badass ? because thats what rome did least they gave it a good try ...ill put it in your terms ..they had a harder fail when they came to scotland
@jimsy7al , not really the tribes in Britannioa had great female leaders & warriors, do you Boadica who almost dorve the Romans out of Britain?. he was a beaten, defeated former Roman General who wanted to end his life with some glory not as a POW. She had evbery adavantagew anyone could have in this situation, hius Roman pride got him killed not her.
@Wolfen443 Yes she did manage to ambush the ninth legion and almost destroyed it, but when it came to a pitched battle with Roman she lost miserably at Watling Street nonetheless as you said Bouccida almost made the romans give up on Britannia.
Maxmius against Etain would of been a good fight :)
@jimsy7al What do you mean, I thought it was just a movie? It is supposed to depict what society was for the barbarians. i'm not trying to make you upset, but if you look around on the internet you'll find that this movie is pretty accurate in some forms. :)
Fucking bullshit, warrior women never existed !! War is not for women !! The roman legionaires were more disciplined and with better tactics, and the ninth legion were spaniards from the roman province of Hispania.
@braven117 Warrior women did exist. War is for women. Roman discipline and tactics used to pretty much fall apart when their formations were disrupted. And since when have Spanish troops been worth a damn?
@braven117 Lol. Are you kidding me? The only place Spain ever conquered was South America, and those guys were using vastly inferior technology. Most of those kills were from diseases that the Spanish took over with them as well. I think you will find that the largest and most powerful Empire in the world was created by the British, and it covered somewhere between a quarter and a third of the world. Please learn some history.
@braven117 Yeah, when we destroyed the Spanish 'Empire' I suppose you could say it was against people with inferior technology. And if you read about the aftermath of the Siege of Cartagena de Indias you will see that within only a couple of years Britain had once again started to crush Spanish shipping. I'm sorry. I forget, what happened to the Spanish Empire again? Because I thought it was torn apart by the British fleet and army.
@135wish I forget what happened to the british empire in the U.S. ?? Oh, i guess the former colony surpassed the Metropoli. And dont say "we" like if you participated in those events !!
@braven117 Lol. I know what happened. We fought a war in which we were outnumbered across several thousand miles of ocean, against a people who were being helped by both Spain and France, whilst at the same time fighting several other wars, and after we lost we went on to create an even more powerful empire that took even more land all over the world, then destroyed the Spanish and French empires. :)
@braven117 And, although I was not there, almost my entire family for the past thousand years has been made up of warriors and soldiers fighting for Britain, so I think I have earned the right to say 'we'. And for most of the past thousand years, English/Britain has been one of the top countries in the world. America has been powerful for the past 60 or so years, after Britain gave up its empire, so I I think America needs to hold on for about 940 more years to actually come close.
@braven117 Oh, and here's the funny part. Even though Britain has given up it's empire, it still controls 14 other countries as overseas territories, has the commonwealth nations as its allies, and is the fifth most powerful country in the world according to CIA rankings. Mexico is numbered at 30. Spain is at number 29. According to CIA information Britain could in fact challenge every Latin country at the same time and win.
@magicjj7 And yet that small ass country created the most powerful empire the world has ever seen. Size has nothing to do with it. Spain sent two armadas. One was destroyed by a storm and another was destroyed by Sir Francis Drake. I presume those were the two things you were commenting on.
@135wish No im saying that i just unlikely were not talking about when it was an empire im talking about now. Britian has a small army and to attack all of south america is kinda of unimaginable possibly if you take Brazil out of the equation and you got Venezula to worry about. And i thought the Spanish Armada's were destroyed at different times.
@magicjj7 Britain's army is small compared to somewhere like America, not compared to most other countries. It is also one of the most skilled military forces in the world and has a large amount of artillery equipment compared to any country in South America. Take the Falklands War for instance. Argentina took it over, prepared for an attack and outnumbered the British troops. The U.S. said that it was a 'military impossibility' to counter-invade.
@magicjj7 Two months later and Britain had killed three times as many troops, injured a few hundred more than Argentina and captured over 11,000 of their troops. Pretty much all of the countries in South America are on the same level military wise and thus I can only conclude that they all lack the necessary skill and discipline to fight Britain, and the CIA concurs.
@magicjj7 Valid point but venezula as oil and lot of it. So whoever they bring into the fight most likely would knock off britian. That being said I highly doubt that America would get in another war over oil so they wouldn't join in i don't know about the rest of the EU. The war would have to be fought on 1-2 fronts if not their would be huge a logistics problem. And even if they do fight on 1-2 fronts they would be outnumbered and outgunned hugely. It just seems overwhealming
@135wish I'm sorry man, "please learn some history", more or less 500 years ago we Spanish people owned the world. Our Armada Invencible was destroyed by a sea storm not by your "fleet" (in fact was weaker than ours). Read somethig about Krasni Bor, about Carlos I (or V), about Felipe II, please do not, insult my country. We had our great moment, you had yours. We both were giants some time ago. I speak your language, you probably don't speak mine, anyway, we belong to motherland Europa
@carlingas93 God, I hate people that look back through old comments to troll. One armada was destroyed by a storm. Spain sent another which was destroyed by Sir Francis Drake and his fleet with no ships lost. The Spanish fleet was not stronger than the British fleet obviously, as it was torn to pieces in the almost constant conflicts with Britain. I insulted your country because there was a fool saying Spain conquered half the world and Spanish troops were the best. Both incorrect.
@135wish hahahahaha, we didnt conquer half the world, we almost conquered all the world, i'll say again that im speaking your language you don't speak mine, respect please, im not a troll, im a medicine student ;)
@carlingas93 "Your" Armada was destroyed by superior seamanship. Drake's 70 ships pushed the 140-ship armada into the open sea (what? you're not suggesting it shouldn't have Been there, are you?) using long range, accurate gunnery and superior designed ships (Drake and Hawkins completely re-designed the new English warships). The Spanish were refused England's S and E shores and tried to go around Scotland and Ireland to limp back to Spain. About half actually made it back via the scenic route.
By the way, that's nonsense, The Spanish fleet was destroyed by storms, not by the British. Drake and Hawkins did not design anything. The ships of the British fleet were build in the German town of Lubec.
O ya, what what a woman!

The history of a language is complex. Actually, the history of all languages is complex. Arrogant to say one language is inferior to another language. Sounds ethnocentric. I can't find the word for what I am trying to say, because I am "inferior." :)

He then points out that the country was settled by Germanics/Vikings....who spoke French?
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
1.- Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French all descend from Latin
2.- English is 50% Latin and 25% Germanic... Read a book if you didn't know it.
3.- Almost 3/4 of America speaks Latin languages (Spanish, French or Portuguese) the rest speaks a Latin/Germanic language: English
4.- Who speak Celtic languages? Minorities in Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
That's reality... When the Roman left Great Britain, did the Celtic Britons survived? No, Germanic and Norse took the islands, and later the Normans.

@antejutronic The Romans failed to conquer Scotland
The Danish were Massacred in Scotland
The Norwegians were defeated by the Picts
Which is why today in Scotland, a large part of our heritage today is Scotti and Pict, which is our original settlers. That's why what you just stated there is false.
ScottMcK9 1 month ago 15
@ScottMcK9 Give them hell Scott!
Thecrazyeditor 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 My history is weak, but it sounds right. Barry agrees and I concur with him on history. Nice work Scott!
Thecrazyeditor 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 I gave your comment an extra thumbs-up, But - the Scotti, according to Roman sources, were a people in North Ireland who "colonized" the south-western portion of Caledonia and eventually the name was attached to the whole country. It was close to the same time as the Angles did the same in what became England i.e. when the Romans pulled out.
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 Historians are saying that the Scotii could've ben indigenous to our land, because the theory that they came in from Ireland is that the Scotti massacred the Picts, if that had been the case, why is most our heritage today, strongly Pictish? So it's an interesting subject, Scotti people could've came from Ireland, then again, an interesting theory suggests they were already part of the land, indigenous, just living on a different part of it. The theory you state though could be true!
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 I'd read of the Scotti being a folk in NE Ireland - who then became described as the folk in SW Scotland, having invaded and settled there, and it eventually becoming the name by which it was called. I think the sources were originally Roman. In Irish histories it's referred to as the colonisation of Alba (Albion, Gallic?) and was the first half of the 6thC - can't remember the date but it was less than a century after the Germanic invasions in the south.......
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 The problem with that theory however mate, and what makes other historians say otherwise, is that most of our heritage today is Pictish. The claim that the Scotti invaded from Ireland is that they wiped out the Picts, they never. Certain historians now claim that they could may well have been original settlers to our land. Although we'll never know for definite. One thing can be said however, our people came from the Basques, blood proves that. High chances are, if from Scotland or...
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 I'd be curious to know the Basque connection, I've known a few Iberian ones. You're not confusing them with the Black Irish, are you?
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 It's to do with a time period, after the Ice Age melted over, three small pockets from the south survived, one of which was from the Basque Region of what is now known as Spain, thus moved up into Britain after the ice started to lift. That's where our dark features, dark hair and eyes comes from. The Picts could may well have spoken a Basque language, they don't know. Interesting point about the Iberian though, I couldn't say who they were, but would be an interesting book to read.
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 The Basque have dark features? Northern Spaniards have dark skin and dark eyes?? can you please browse on google and type in basque or asturians or galicians. Iberians are pure Spaniards hence the Iberian peninsula. Type in Santander, type in Aragon. See Spaniards have dark features. Better yet come to Spain. Yes southern Spaniards are more moorish, but still the authentic Iberians are white. I am from Spain and I find your comment very offensive.
sfumato1002 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 ...or Ireland (like the Scotti) then there's without doubt, our people have been around on these lands from the time after the Big Freeze 11,000 years ago, perhaps even 14,000 years ago, depends.
You could be right though mate, you could be!
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 ....I only ever found One book about the Picts. There are loads about the Celts and they're all called "The Celts". It's a real old one from a real old shop in New Orleans, called 'The Pictish Nation, It's People and it's Church' by Archibald Scott. I posted this to another guy and he went and downloaded it from google books. There are several maps with Picts being located in lots of specific regions, Lowlands and Highlands - parts of northern England too..after the English
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 Haha, I just thought of the Caledonians - no doubt you know it was called Caledonia - but I've also seen regions where 'caledonians' was written as the lands where they lived, the folk who inhabited the places. So there must've been a lot of land bargaining or aggro if it came to it, prob'ly did. No doubt the Clans evolved from all this.
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 The name Caledonia was the name the Romans gave our land, 'Caled' meaning 'hard rocky land' or 'hard fought people', our people known as the Caledonii. But aye that's how the land got it's name, it's a Romanticised name for what our land was to become. The Picts soon adapted to the name as being called Scots, thus is why they moved forward with that name and culture. It was Kenneth McAlpin who formed and united our people as who we are today, to fight the south instead of each other.
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 It's easy to see why the Romans weren't more than curious about venturing further and heading to Ireland, tho' it was contemplated a few times. Naming it Hibernia wasn't a compliment. 'Land of eternal Winter'. If you were from the Med. would you be excited about the idea?
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 True, saying that, they never had maps, they may not even have known there was an Island there. The main reason they ventured north is because they first settled for resources, when attacked, then then set off north to basically wipe us all out. But because of Scotland's rough terrain and people, it showed why after 500 years we remained unconquered and free. Their main concentration was the main land, and after fighting Scotland that long, they eventually gave it up and went home...
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 Yeah, right. One thing tho', the Greeks had maps before the Romans did. And before that, the 'Islands at the end of the Earth' were well known to the Phoenicians who traded mainly for tin. In "The war diaries of Caesar" there's an easily recognisable and detailed map on the first page. The conquest of the north got to a point where there was a ? about why they wanted it. Britain was invaded mainly because the people had 'aided' the Gauls and was the seat of Druidic Europe.
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 You're right about why they invaded, but it's not the reason they invaded Scotland, I can tell you that for a fact. They invaded Scotland because the Romans done business with Britagnnia Clan, attacked the Welsh and the Britagnnia turned their back on them, the Romans set about wiping them out, and of course, they then decided it was time to march north and wipe out the rest of our people, but of course, they failed after 500 years at war with Scotland.
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 And we all know about the Ancient Greeks, in fact one of their explorers had travelled the coast line long before the Romans, there's even a Greek coin been found in Scotland to prove there had been trade long before it.
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@gyrofoam1 I do have a belief though that our people could may well have came from the land of Hibernia, because we're a similar people in that sense.
ScottMcK9 1 month ago
@ScottMcK9 The original settlers were Picts the Scots eventualy conquered all Scotland the reason why is called Scotland not Pictland! The Romans estabalish trade and comerce with local peoples it wasnt always war "Picts" or whatver the peoples north of wall apraice Roman things many cloths and clay are found from Roman Culture and of course Roman coins are also found north of the wall. The Vikings mingle with Scots a reason why you have Norse-Gaels.

MJFAN666 1 month ago
Wrong. Simply wrong.
ExtremeDeathman 1 month ago
Poor Britons, don't have nothing more than fantasies (as the French with Asterix) about defeating Rome - Reality is that the Romans kicked their blue-painted asses so bad, that today the only ones that speak Celtic are some minorities between the Welsh, Irish and Scots... The huge majority in the isles speak today a mix of 50% Latin and 25% Germanic, or what we call today "English".
antejutronic 2 months ago
@antejutronic I dont buy that, even in England Celtic languages were still spoken, in the "old North". Most of Scotland, and all of Wales and Ireland were all dominated by Celtic languages until recently. Fuck im Canadian and I have Great Grandparents that were fluent in Gaelic, so yea the Romans can suck a big blue cock, no one I know today speaks anything similar ancient Latin, English is predominantly a mix of Anglo-Saxon and norman french, witch is Vulagr latin, not Roman Latin.
mothman64 2 months ago
@mothman64 Not to mention the normans probably spoke French in a Nordic accent, Being the north men.
mothman64 2 months ago
@antejutronic the only Roman esc influence in English is the recently added Scientific words, witch were added to English not by Romans but the English themselves.
mothman64 2 months ago
@mothman64 Telephone, Telegraph, Teleport, Telegram, Hydraulic, Hydroponic, Aeroplane, Interview, there's an endless list of English words which are compound words derived not only Latin but Greek also, probably a reasonably equal measure of each. We've always taken the Greek and Latin root-words to name a new invention, discovery, syndrome, etc. They weren't given to the English by some asshole from France. Don't bother about antejutronic-thing - he just can't deal with what he is.
gyrofoam1 1 month ago
@antejutronic Face it, you really don't have a clue, do you?. In fact you just made the entire thing up out of thin air. 50% Latin?...like what, any examples?
gyrofoam1 2 months ago
@gyrofoam1 The languages of the majority of europe have some basis of Latin. However English has the widest variety of languages as a basis, on grounds of it contains elements of Celtic, Nordic, Germanic, Gualic and Latin. As well as some greek thrown in.
darkshardshoots 1 month ago
@darkshardshoots We learned German at school. It was obvious to all that most of the common root-words we use today are German in origin. I also found, when I lived in Holland, how many words and, more importantly, pronunciation were from that branch of the language.Nordic is a Germanic language also, and is more influential as pronunciation. My dad's folks were from Durham - Nordic pronunciation. Re. Celtic: maybe you can come up with a few examples as I don't hear them myself.

TheBrightestFan 3 months ago
The way the actress playing her is built makes this scene comical to me. She has barely any muscle mass for even a woman. In reality he would get close and easily overpower her with her long rendered useless due to its length. Shes obviously nimble, but in many parts of this fight she throws the general around like someone double or triple her size with no apparent technique to make up for that disadvantage.
KrazyKommieKiller 3 months ago 14
@KrazyKommieKiller In real life the general would have won. braven117 4 months ago
@braven117 Warrior women did exist. War is for women. Roman discipline and tactics used to pretty much fall apart when their formations were disrupted. And since when have Spanish troops been worth a damn?
135wish 4 months ago
@135wish Since they are the most fearsome warriors in Europe and conquered half of the world !
braven117 4 months ago
@braven117 Lol. Are you kidding me? The only place Spain ever conquered was South America, and those guys were using vastly inferior technology. Most of those kills were from diseases that the Spanish took over with them as well. I think you will find that the largest and most powerful Empire in the world was created by the British, and it covered somewhere between a quarter and a third of the world. Please learn some history.
135wish 4 months ago

braven117 4 months ago
@braven117 Yeah, when we destroyed the Spanish 'Empire' I suppose you could say it was against people with inferior technology. And if you read about the aftermath of the Siege of Cartagena de Indias you will see that within only a couple of years Britain had once again started to crush Spanish shipping. I'm sorry. I forget, what happened to the Spanish Empire again? Because I thought it was torn apart by the British fleet and army.
135wish 4 months ago
@135wish I forget what happened to the british empire in the U.S. ?? Oh, i guess the former colony surpassed the Metropoli. And dont say "we" like if you participated in those events !!
braven117 4 months ago
@braven117 Lol. :)
135wish 4 months ago
@braven117 And, although I was not there, almost my entire family for the past thousand years has been made up of warriors and soldiers fighting for Britain, so I think I have earned the right to say 'we'. And for most of the past thousand years, English/Britain has been one of the top countries in the world. America has been powerful for the past 60 or so years, after Britain gave up its empire, so I I think America needs to hold on for about 940 more years to actually come close.
135wish 4 months ago
@braven117 Oh, and here's the funny part. Even though Britain has given up it's empire, it still controls 14 other countries as overseas territories, has the commonwealth nations as its allies, and is the fifth most powerful country in the world according to CIA rankings. Mexico is numbered at 30. Spain is at number 29. According to CIA information Britain could in fact challenge every Latin country at the same time and win.
135wish 4 months ago
@135wish i highly doubt there's no doubt their tough and very well equipped but Britian is a small ass country.
magicjj7 3 months ago
@magicjj7 And yet that small ass country created the most powerful empire the world has ever seen. Size has nothing to do with it. Spain sent two armadas. One was destroyed by a storm and another was destroyed by Sir Francis Drake. I presume those were the two things you were commenting on.
135wish 3 months ago

@135wish I thought a storm destroyed it.

@braven117 Also, do you know who Sir Francis Drake was? Do you remember what happened to all your armadas?

@carlingas93 You took south America. That's pretty much it. You did not almost conquer all the of world.

@slideharp1
By the way, that's nonsense, The Spanish fleet was destroyed by storms, not by the British. Drake and Hawkins did not design anything. The ships of the British fleet were build in the German town of Lubec.
