I work in Max9 primarily and I have autosave every 5 minutes turned on, and I save a separate file whenever I add or change models or the animation settings. Max has crashed many times and my work has always been saved. I also render to frames instead of movie files, a HUGE life saver!
Nice work so far. I am assuming you are using PFlow for the particles, have you tried turning on motion blur?
