@thecreativeone tell your friend this: a gerbil must be in pairs, the same gender. and the cage is WAY to small. glass cages are much better for gerbils, but they do need air, so what a lot of ppl do is they get one of those cages where the top is non-chewable wire cage and there's a glass cage attached to it under it

@TheZerox09 Ok have you got a good cage if its so wide the cage like the bars are realy wide and your gerbil can fit throw it then i would say get another cage or you can always use big plastic boxes which will help too or a fish tank! And also tame it!

He looks nice and healthy now but i'm pretty sure hes gonna go downhill if some things aren't changed. He should lots of bedding to burrow in (tanks are better) and it shouldn't be wood shavings, He will get respitory problems. Also he needs something to chew on(cardboard rolls/wood) or his teeth will overgrow. Nesting material would be nice too (hay or shredded tissue). I know hes not yours but at least try to recommend these things to your friends. He will live a better life this way.
Thats the same cage i had my gerbil chewd the wheel to pices and i add ed some clean socks brand new for her to make bedding since its kinda cold in december but i got her a new wheel and let her exersice outside the cage
i have a gerbilarium and a dwarf hamster cage but i only orriginally had the gerbilarium for both of my grbils and they had a fight a bad 1 so i had to buy another cage so the one that is the bad 1 is in the gerbilaium and the gd 1 is in the smaller cage but they are 2 now and the one in the small cage is in better shape tha the 1 in the big cage
Gerbils are awesome, I love them. But dude you gotta get another cage, that's too small. My baby mouses cage is bigger then that. I can tell you in a few days that wheel will be chewed to pieces. I personally like the bed, though. :) Try getting a standard cage that's twice that cage.
Um...sorry to tell you this but that habitat is a HORRIBLe place for Chico..they should NOT have that cozy bed, they should NOT have that kind of cage, it needs to be a terrarium, There should be NOTHING plastic in there. The bedding should be aspen.

Gerbils need a gerbil friend to live with, also they need some sand to clean their fur with. And they need a home where no one can see them so they can feel safe. That's probably why he's sleeping under the bed...

they like living in pairs yes but gerbils BASIC NEEDS are.. something to dig/burrow in(ie ASPEN wood shavings perhaps).. wood to knaw on, space to run and some nesting material.
This is so so sad. He has no mate, no space to run, and nowhere to burrow. Its just cruel. I have 2 gerbils in a huge tank with loads of room for them.
They are also very social and like company even if the owner gives them lots of attention they still have to eat alone, sleep alone and have no playmate and can get depressed. Tell your friends to google 'gerbil care' but not to take any just one sites word as there are some contradictions here and there

Gerbils need sawdust at least 3 to 4 inches and like lots fo tunnels and woodne things to nibble on to keep thier teeth short as they grow all their lives. They would be better in a tank than a cage like that.

omdz I just bought two boys and called them Benji and Coco and I swear they're on lil gerbil crack cus they are just overly hypo! And they chew EVERYTHING. Everything plastic will have to be converted to grass and metal lol. I totally didn't realise they burrow more than hamsters. They kinda kicked all their sawdust through the cage bars so I guess I'll have to buy a tank now :s They're lucky their so cute...hmm....lol

well not to burst your bubble but gerbils aren't supposed to have plastic, pine bedding, or any type of cloth... so pretty much your whole cage is effed up lol. that cage is wayy to small. i know you're just sitting, but maybe you'll inform your friends they're putting his life at risk. all of those can kill him. get aspen bedding, its nice. and any wood (besides pine) and cardboard are great treats!! you should tell your friends to get at least a 10gal tank so he had room to burrow.

gerbils are more active than hamsters, hamsters sleep in the day and wake up at night, gerbils just take short naps in the day. i suggest to have at least 2 gerbils they need a parter

A gerbil is USUALLY bigger and they have longer tails. In my opinion i prefer gerbils (: I have had both and Gerbils are just more friendly. ;D

Gerbils need a gerbil friend to live with, also they need some sand to clean their fur with. And they need a home where no one can see them so they can feel safe. That's probably why he's sleeping under the bed...

I used to have a gerbil. Mine always jumped out of my hands when I tried to pick it up too, guess they don't like to be held.

owkay, tgis is really bad! He needs a friend, he needs much more bedding to dig in, a tank is better, do NOT use plastic, they will eat it, remove the "bed" he will eat it!!!! Give him some wood to chew on!

they like living in pairs yes but gerbils BASIC NEEDS are.. something to dig/burrow in(ie ASPEN wood shavings perhaps).. wood to knaw on, space to run and some nesting material.

This is so so sad. He has no mate, no space to run, and nowhere to burrow. Its just cruel. I have 2 gerbils in a huge tank with loads of room for them.

Ive got a gerbil that looks like a skunk. His name is Willy........
He never used his wheel though.....
He ate the ENTIRE thing.
He chews on anything I put in there
And his house is a cracker box.
He loves it!

They are also very social and like company even if the owner gives them lots of attention they still have to eat alone, sleep alone and have no playmate and can get depressed. Tell your friends to google 'gerbil care' but not to take any just one sites word as there are some contradictions here and there

I know this gerbil isnt yours and he looks totally gorgeous but may i point out a few thigns if that it ok and maybe pass it on to yourf riend.
Gerbils need sawdust at least 3 to 4 inches and like lots fo tunnels and woodne things to nibble on to keep thier teeth short as they grow all their lives. They would be better in a tank than a cage like that.

yeah, but... dont you thinks its pretty ignorant to tell tell someone that their raising their pets wrong, and then give them and then lecture thim incorrectly? that gerbil would have been just as bad off if he had listened to you and gotten wood shavings. He could have gotten CEDAR! or something else harmful to gerbils instead. just make sure you give correct information next time babycakes

lol.. @ babycakes. Just please tell your friend to give your gerbil some quality of life. It only takes a little looking into on the net and larger gerbilariums/tanks dont cost much really( even second hand). Something to knaw on some tunnels etc. I suggested googling 'gerbil care'..to ensure whoever owns the gerbil gets the CORRECT info. I was generalising.

omdz I just bought two boys and called them Benji and Coco and I swear they're on lil gerbil crack cus they are just overly hypo! And they chew EVERYTHING. Everything plastic will have to be converted to grass and metal lol. I totally didn't realise they burrow more than hamsters. They kinda kicked all their sawdust through the cage bars so I guess I'll have to buy a tank now :s They're lucky their so cute...hmm....lol

he's adorable!!! Gerbils are illegal where I live, but I've pondered getting them in the future since my fiance and I will probably move out of state in the future.
Anyhow, you may want your friends to look into a proper set up for Chico. If they google: 'pet info packets' they will have link to a site that will tell them anything and everything they need to know to properly care for Chico.

well not to burst your bubble but gerbils aren't supposed to have plastic, pine bedding, or any type of cloth... so pretty much your whole cage is effed up lol. that cage is wayy to small. i know you're just sitting, but maybe you'll inform your friends they're putting his life at risk. all of those can kill him. get aspen bedding, its nice. and any wood (besides pine) and cardboard are great treats!! you should tell your friends to get at least a 10gal tank so he had room to burrow.
