Thumbs up if you think England only won this series because McGrath trod on a cricket ball and rolled his ankle, out injured for the rest of the series..
benaud made the moment, magnificent commentary. 'JONES! BOWDEN! Kasprowicz the man to go, and harmison has done it! DESPAIR on the faces of the batsmen and joy for every england player on the field. victory, by TWO RUNS.' even he called it 'one of the most thrilling games of cricket there's ever been'

@abest00 you just hit on the nail i wish most people would think about that about test cricket but they dont that match was the best i ever watched when england got the last week i was nearly in tears i was so happy
Best test series i have seen in my opinion and im an aussie. i think it was set up well with us winning the first game easily and it looked like it would be a repeat of previous years but u brits just played too good. 09 was a great series too. but this years hahaha that was just ugly but we'll come back sooner or later and make the ashes competitive again but looking at the current team it mite be a while yet.
@bobbythelord Always cyclical, it's England's turn to be in the ascendency. In the 70's it was Lillee, Thompson, and Aussie domination, in the 80's Botham inspired England, in the 90's Border, Warne and the Waughs ruled, then halfway through the last decade Freddie and co came along. There's been compelling Ashes cricket down the decades from both sides. Long may it continue. (By the way, I live a 10 minute walk away from the pitch where the 1948 Invincibles scored 700 in a day against Essex!)
what a great test series that was. i can remember the kasprowic dismissal like it was yesterday. really felt for brett lee that day. it just shows u that u dont always need a 20-20 game for exciting cricket.
The greatest Cricket ever seen, totally superb!every game seemed to have so many twists and turns....the Aussie had arguably the greatest team ever at the time,England were no2 in the world, both went at it hammer and tongs, ile never forget this series as long as i live!!
(My wife just got me the 2005 Greatest Series 3 DVD set that is compatible with North American DVD players for Christmas! Needless to say I watched and relived 2005 Ashes all over again!)
@mshk1989 LOL no I married a fellow Yank. When I lived in England I had no luck pulling English women, it doesn't generally work for us that way although the reverse tends to work with English men pulling Yank birds!
this series was what sport is all about man. No side deserved to lose and as a patriotic Englishman it would have hurt a lot but I would have cared far less than any other sporting loss because of the spirit it was played in. If this series comes even close to this it will be doing well.
i watched this whole video just so i could see the flintoff/lee moment at the end. i heard about it and i've been searching for it for a few years. i wish i could find the live version with some commentary. special moment. i'm a sap for such stuff.
@vladtepes97 you're not the only one - it was voted picture of the series by all of the UK media - just summed up not just a great contest, but also shows the genuine respect by both teams. We are the best of enemies as they say...

Jesus. No matter how many times I see it, that dismissal of Kasprowicz to win the match, and Michael Vaughan's reaction, makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.
Great rearguard action from Australia and truly great finish to a game.
This in my opinion was the best cricket series ever. It put Ashes back on the map and revived the spirit of the game in England. I remember watching every day of every single match with my dad (Ex-1st class cricketer here in Pakistan). I think pretty much everyone can agree with me when I say that they wanted England to win. Eversince this I've been a fan of the English cricket team. Broke my heart though to see Eng play against Pak right after this in Pak. My 2 favourite teams. Good ol' days.
i will never forget this day, it will always be in the back of my mind. So much emotion and really shows the world what this amazing game is all about. And an ace video, really well done buddy :)
But it wouldn't have been a great series if Australia had not played well, too, and it would not have meant as much if this had not been one of the best Australian teams. It was a wonderful Ashes series, and went down to the final ball on the final day of the fifth and final test at the Oval.
It was a triumph for cricket, and the whole series was an illustration of why this remains the greatest of all sports.
This is one of the best test matches that i have ever seen, i still remember the thrill, the excitement and all the emotions! I loved it; it also shows the true spirit of cricket. It truly revived "the beautiful game"
And nice end with the famous Lee / Flintoff caption - I have a 16 x 12 print of that photo and in just one image shows the spirit that cricket has over football, rugby etc etc.
I'm ignoring all the banter of who won the match - it was just special to watch the Edgbaston match... The draw in the next match at TB made up for the aussie pain somewhat...
I was in the Walkabout bar at Temple Tube station watching the final days play surrounded by at least 150 aussies. No one in that bar begruged Englands win that day. If fact most of them said that was probably the best cricket match they had seen. The Aussies always play to win, and the defeat must have been hard to swallow being so close to winning it, after being blown away for four days, but they do appreciate when someone outplays them. A day i'll never forget.
Ahhh poor old convos! i sat in my front room with my head in my hands for 2 horrible hours...even when Jones caught the ball i wasnt happy...NO victory is worth that stress! Harmys awesome slow ball to bamboozle Clark late on Sat was my highlight...wow!
as an australian i can safely say this match at edgbaston and the match at adelaide the following ashes series, would have to be the two greatest cricket matches of all time!!
That one gesture by Freddie and the way he played in that series will make him a legend of English cricket forever. You can argue till you're hoarse about him not fullfiling his potential, the man is still a legend and a true Brit.
It was refreshing to see the entire series played with such intensity epitomised with such a sporting gesture. My 12 year old son always has a big passionate story to tell every time he sees that picture with Lee and Flintoff. Thanks guys!!
they should imortalize the flintoff lee embrace in a trophy. its a gr8 image and our rugby league trophy is based on the same thing. a gr8 trophy it is too.
flintofs gesture to brett lee, makes you proud to be british, and thats they way cricket, in fact all sport should be played, two great teams battling it out till the end, gracefull in defeat and magnanomous in victory
Andewrson and Monty defying 11 overs, the Aussies destroying out batting at Headingly and then a win at the Oval with the great bowling by Brad and the defiant batting of Ponting and Hussey.
fuck man, i really miss the old boys...where are the likes of warnie, mcgrath and gilly :( , i don't think we will have players of their caliber in our generation. Cricket is so much poorer now that the Aussie greats have gone
What an amazing game that was! I couldn't watch properly, peeking through my fingers, the screams of delight from my whole street when the final wicket fell, good memories, the summer of 05 is all about this...
That video pretty much sums up the whole series for me. The great Magrath, the ferocious Flintoff and the good sportsmanship shown at the end. The greatest series ever. Bring on the next one.
the last scene was absolutely fantastic when Freddie Flintoff was cheering up Brett Lee showing the true sportsman spirit by both teams.
I remember the T20 world cup when Misbah ul Haq was sitting on the ground after losing the match and no Indian player came to appreciate his effort and cheer him up.
Brings back so many memories of a fantastic summer...outstanding test listened to on a beach on an radio that wouldn't tune in properly, strangers walking over and listening in sharing out the beers....life does not get much better than this...if only we could do the same this summer?
i hate to say it but i doubt it there can ever be a better series than 05. it was a great summer and even though they lost im sure the australians will say it was a great series aswell. i hope im proven wrong bu its gonna be tough to beat.
The start of the decline in Australian Cricket. England proved in this series that Australia was beatable even with Glenn Macgrath & Shane Warne. The greatest Team in a decade was showing its age & now they are coming back to the field.
I rate this series as one of the best ever played....no media battles over sledging - the players just let the cricket do the talking.
As the West Indies ruled the 80's, Aust ruled the 90's & part of this decade, time for another country to step up.
I lost Simon Jones?? I'm an Australian mate....My point is Australia's decline had started. The greatest team was now showing its age & sadly this is proven even more now with the departure of Gilchrist & Hayden. England played out of their skins in that series & yet played dismally when they came out to Aust. Tests against decent competition have Australia battling now...ie Indian & South African Series.
Somehow - I don't think you'll see a 5-0 this time around.
honest analysis mate. These days it's more like the balanced situation where all the top nations are a big ask on home turf. Should be a hell of a summer.
Beating England 5-0 after losing their last series and beating the rest of the world easily MCG (maybe not as much, but still) as quite memorable as well. It's a ridiculous statement, sorry. Next you're going to say "oh, and they lost the bodyline series"... Ha.
lol wtf are on about mate? firstly u never beat SA in the world cup, u tied with them. and yes even thu aus progressed, in history its remembered as the great tied one day match. beating a depleted england 5-0 is no remarkable acheviement and nothing close to being as memorable as my list above. face it, altho aus dominated for a decade, they happened to lose in the most exciting matches of the MODERN ERA (bodyline doesnt count fool).
see your just further justifying the reason why i labeled u a fool. clearly my initial comment was more than a month ago, before India actually won the B+G series. therefore ur statement "ur cool" is true, because i am..or at least cooler than you. cos ur here having a sook when you can just can't admit that aus happened to be on the losing end of some of the greatest matches of all time even tho they were the champs during that era of cricket. FOOL
Your as in you're? I'm not gonna be nit picky. And i'm not going to deny that you were right about your first comment over a month ago, fair enough. Touche'. Doesn't make you cooler though, does it? It's just a conversation. But i still believe they did manage some good victories, or otherwise they wouldn't be a great, would they? Why the fool in capital letters? Just so i remember?
look here it is plain and simple. In the last decade when Australia won, the rest of the world was not surprised. No one cares or remembers when Australia won a match or a series except of course the Aussie fans like you. Everyone around the world remembers the ones in which Australia happened to lose. My South African mate tells me about the world record one day match in 2006. Or when my uncle was in the windies, they raved on about that match where they chased 400 in 4th innings. Face it.
Well, they beat them, as in they progressed when "Alan Donald had a meltdown and forgot how to run", (Billy Birmingham) and i'm sure if i could be assed researching i could find some memorable wins in modern era. are grand finals to world cups memorable?
AND i'm not saying Australia sucks at cricket. Oh no, I very much admit they were the true champions for over a decade. In fact they were so dominant that opposition teams found a draw as a win. Hence whenever Australia won, it wasn't fantastic or memorable, it was what was expected. Hence to defeat them, a country/team needed the extraordinary and thats why names like Laxman, Lara, Gibbs and Flintoff are so famous because they played a leading role in defying the odds and beating australia!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You dirty cheating cunt Trescothick....... sucked on a lollie recently have you??? I guess we should have expected this though from the country that gave us Bodyline....... When you realise you can't beat the Aussies fair and square you have to resort to blatant cheating.
When the australians realise that they have been beaten they just resort to bitching. U mention bodyline but if you knew anything about it you would know that know players were ever injured whilst a bodyline field was set. When looking at the game today how many bowlers dnt go out atleast once with the intention of ruffling up a batsman with a blow to the body, its not cheating its using the laws to our advantage.
I don't think Bert Oldfield was injured with a Bodyline field. He was the guy with a fractured skull? The Bodyline field was removed a few balls before his injury, but because of the controversy people associate his injury with Bodyline.
Anyway, I think us English fans are deluding ourselves if Australia are going to come here this year and capitulate. They are still a competitive outfit. Losing McGrath, Gilly, Haydos, Gillespie, Martyn, Langer and Warne has just levelled the field.
Maybe the indian team and the australian team can learn a few lessons from bret tlee and freddie about sportmanship. Great gesture in the end. Makes me proud to be a follower of this great game and to be watching that awesome moment live on tv.
great test, great finish. well done england. didn't see much difference in the end of game celebrations than the what the Aussies were castigated for against India in Sydney recently, except that the batsman stayed out there longer after the final wicket and Flintoff had the opportunity after going nuts with his team mates to seek out Lee and congratulate him. Great moment. Kumble turned and walked off in Sydney and the Aussies got slaughtered for arrogantly celebrating winning. Kolkata 2001?
it was awesome too bad we lost however i liked the india australia game in sydney better...probably because it had something to do with australia winning :)
well this is the last time i see england winning against australia in the ashes for quite a while yet. Unless sidebottom can take out the whole aussie team by himself.
A few months a go i would have probaly agreed with you, but we have got some good bowlers coming through
Sidebottom is key no doubt but we have Paneasar whos maturing, Anderson (who i was sceptic about) showing his class against New Zealand. We also have Simon Jones and Flintoff getting back to fitness
Also and outside chance for Mahmood who is getting back to his best and Plunkett who i believe deserves another chance (Sidebottom proves that everyone deserves another chance)
I'm an Aussie and Flintoff is just about no.1 on my list of respected sportsmen. Watching it live at 3am over here in Australia, couldnt've been more prouder of Brett Lee, and Flintoff's handshake was just a fantastic gesture to show his appreciation to Lee and Australia for a sensational game of cricket, and what in the end was a quite superb series.
One of the best test match of all time. Great last moment with freddie coming over to console brett lee after his heroic effort went in vain. Great sportmans spirit. England deserved this series.
I remember watchin the final few overs in pakistan with my bro, the moment from 4:04 we were jumping up & down, i will never forget tis moment!!!

fuck man, i really miss the old boys...where are the likes of warnie, mcgrath and gilly :( , i don't think we will have players of their caliber in our generation. Cricket is so much poorer now that the Aussie greats have gone

the whole series just doesn't feel the same this year. One of those times and place things i guess...
maybe it will all change as the series goes on but...
will we see kids playing cricket rather than football in their gardens this year? it doesn't feel like it. yet?

What an amazing game that was! I couldn't watch properly, peeking through my fingers, the screams of delight from my whole street when the final wicket fell, good memories, the summer of 05 is all about this...

compare this to this years ashes and even after one test at cardiff that 2005 was one in a million it will never happen again

Bugger it, bloody England played brilliantly in this series and it was worth losing all that sleep to watch it. That's tough to say for an Aussie!

however do you agree that we would have won the series back if we had more than a week of training before they left for england

That video pretty much sums up the whole series for me. The great Magrath, the ferocious Flintoff and the good sportsmanship shown at the end. The greatest series ever. Bring on the next one.

Yes absolutely. A great moment. Brett Lee showed great courage...and dignity
FIFTY2WEEKS 2 years ago 2
the last scene was absolutely fantastic when Freddie Flintoff was cheering up Brett Lee showing the true sportsman spirit by both teams.
I remember the T20 world cup when Misbah ul Haq was sitting on the ground after losing the match and no Indian player came to appreciate his effort and cheer him up.

Brings back so many memories of a fantastic summer...outstanding test listened to on a beach on an radio that wouldn't tune in properly, strangers walking over and listening in sharing out the beers....life does not get much better than this...if only we could do the same this summer?
mgbartlett73 2 years ago 15
i hate to say it but i doubt it there can ever be a better series than 05. it was a great summer and even though they lost im sure the australians will say it was a great series aswell. i hope im proven wrong bu its gonna be tough to beat.

BANGER5NMA5H 3 years ago
good one mcgrath was injured for the two losing tests
lilbennyt 2 years ago
So you are saying that Australia was a "one man team"?
BANGER5NMA5H 2 years ago
no the aussies best fast bowler was injured. and we lost and the next series we played england what happen ? you lost simon jones and lost 5-0
lilbennyt 2 years ago
I lost Simon Jones?? I'm an Australian mate....My point is Australia's decline had started. The greatest team was now showing its age & sadly this is proven even more now with the departure of Gilchrist & Hayden. England played out of their skins in that series & yet played dismally when they came out to Aust. Tests against decent competition have Australia battling now...ie Indian & South African Series.
Somehow - I don't think you'll see a 5-0 this time around.
BANGER5NMA5H 2 years ago
honest analysis mate. These days it's more like the balanced situation where all the top nations are a big ask on home turf. Should be a hell of a summer.

great vid...australia seems to lose in the most memorable games of cricket eg:
Edgbaston test 05 v england
Kolkata test 2001 v india
against SA in 2006 world record ODI
i'd rate them as some of the most memorable of the modern era
siddharthsingh12 3 years ago
I'd also rate:
Beating SA in 1999 World cup Semi
Beating England 5-0 after losing their last series and beating the rest of the world easily MCG (maybe not as much, but still) as quite memorable as well. It's a ridiculous statement, sorry. Next you're going to say "oh, and they lost the bodyline series"... Ha.
willausten 3 years ago
lol wtf are on about mate? firstly u never beat SA in the world cup, u tied with them. and yes even thu aus progressed, in history its remembered as the great tied one day match. beating a depleted england 5-0 is no remarkable acheviement and nothing close to being as memorable as my list above. face it, altho aus dominated for a decade, they happened to lose in the most exciting matches of the MODERN ERA (bodyline doesnt count fool).
siddharthsingh12 3 years ago
i love how i'm being told this by an Indian just after they've beaten us. You're so cool.
P.S. nice use of the word fool
willausten 3 years ago
see your just further justifying the reason why i labeled u a fool. clearly my initial comment was more than a month ago, before India actually won the B+G series. therefore ur statement "ur cool" is true, because i am..or at least cooler than you. cos ur here having a sook when you can just can't admit that aus happened to be on the losing end of some of the greatest matches of all time even tho they were the champs during that era of cricket. FOOL
siddharthsingh12 3 years ago
Your as in you're? I'm not gonna be nit picky. And i'm not going to deny that you were right about your first comment over a month ago, fair enough. Touche'. Doesn't make you cooler though, does it? It's just a conversation. But i still believe they did manage some good victories, or otherwise they wouldn't be a great, would they? Why the fool in capital letters? Just so i remember?
willausten 3 years ago
look here it is plain and simple. Face it.
siddharthsingh12 3 years ago
Well, they beat them, as in they progressed when "Alan Donald had a meltdown and forgot how to run", (Billy Birmingham) and i'm sure if i could be assed researching i could find some memorable wins in modern era. are grand finals to world cups memorable?
willausten 3 years ago
AND i'm not saying Australia sucks at cricket. Oh no, I very much admit they were the true champions for over a decade. In fact they were so dominant that opposition teams found a draw as a win. Hence whenever Australia won, it wasn't fantastic or memorable, it was what was expected. Hence to defeat them, a country/team needed the extraordinary and thats why names like Laxman, Lara, Gibbs and Flintoff are so famous because they played a leading role in defying the odds and beating australia!
siddharthsingh12 3 years ago
this game has to be the greatest test match ever

You dirty cheating cunt Trescothick....... sucked on a lollie recently have you??? I guess we should have expected this though from the country that gave us Bodyline....... When you realise you can't beat the Aussies fair and square you have to resort to blatant cheating.
mtk19712003 3 years ago
When the australians realise that they have been beaten they just resort to bitching. U mention bodyline but if you knew anything about it you would know that know players were ever injured whilst a bodyline field was set. When looking at the game today how many bowlers dnt go out atleast once with the intention of ruffling up a batsman with a blow to the body, its not cheating its using the laws to our advantage.
obituarypigeon 3 years ago
1 person did get injured (Bert Oldfield) but he admitted that it was his own fault (top edge)
cjm2fast4u 3 years ago
I don't think Bert Oldfield was injured with a Bodyline field. He was the guy with a fractured skull? The Bodyline field was removed a few balls before his injury, but because of the controversy people associate his injury with Bodyline.
Anyway, I think us English fans are deluding ourselves if Australia are going to come here this year and capitulate. They are still a competitive outfit. Losing McGrath, Gilly, Haydos, Gillespie, Martyn, Langer and Warne has just levelled the field.
tkw251070 3 years ago 6
So what if he did? we regained the ashes anyway. Oh and we're not so good oursleves, just look at the underarm ball

great test, great finish. well done england. didn't see much difference in the end of game celebrations than the what the Aussies were castigated for against India in Sydney recently, except that the batsman stayed out there longer after the final wicket and Flintoff had the opportunity after going nuts with his team mates to seek out Lee and congratulate him. Great moment. Kumble turned and walked off in Sydney and the Aussies got slaughtered for arrogantly celebrating winning. Kolkata 2001?

it was awesome too bad we lost however i liked the india australia game in sydney better...probably because it had something to do with australia winning :)
mcvilla25 3 years ago
well this is the last time i see england winning against australia in the ashes for quite a while yet. Unless sidebottom can take out the whole aussie team by himself.
leeds0united 3 years ago
A few months a go i would have probaly agreed with you, but we have got some good bowlers coming through
Sidebottom is key no doubt but we have Paneasar whos maturing, Anderson (who i was sceptic about) showing his class against New Zealand. We also have Simon Jones and Flintoff getting back to fitness
Also and outside chance for Mahmood who is getting back to his best and Plunkett who i believe deserves another chance (Sidebottom proves that everyone deserves another chance)

awesome, without doubt the best cricket moment ive seen im my life! I went mental when we took that last wicket!

Well done Freddie.
