Well, when It kills kids in different forms, the forms are emphatically REAL, and they're different shapes to the star-spider form. And there's parts where those forms change shape according to who's present. It's kind of ambiguous as to whether it's a shape-shifter or one shape projecting different forms, though when It gets slingshotted, It changes shape as it escapes and Ben nearly sees what shape it really is. Unequivocal, almost?

IT is a metaphysical being that has been around since the beginning of time, the spider form is just the closest thing the human mind can comprehend to it's true form..and the book's description of the spider is pretty creepy.

@DoughboyJonesmk2 That was the thing I hated about the film adaption, one of the many things, in the book it slowly had it going after the characters while they were going through the sewers. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if they would have led up to it.

This scene alone was the whole destroyer of the film's ability to scare small children, let alone allow it to be classified as a horror. I remember watching IT for the first time when i was ten all those years ago when Fox did that two weekend special thing. First half scared the shit out of me, but after the second half. Not so much. Oddly enough this scene sorta blew the fear away leaving an exposed jet black core of black hate. So i guess it was not a complete failure?

Don't know. I guess its just Hollywood at work. They wouldn't follow the book closely. But from what I remember, IT's true form is Deadlights, something you can say is like a spirit. Its a bright orange like glow that if you look at, you become insane(like the glow in the arachnids stomach). Kids perceive IT as Pennywise, people who can comprehend more complex things see this arachnid, and finally, there are some who are unlucky and see the true form, Deadlights.

While reading "It" It is apparent that the story was written in a drug induced haze. I am a big fan of King and do enjoy IT, but, even i must admit that the story is all over the place and rarely ever establishes a clear direction. The only two aspects of the story which give it relevance is how vividly the horror and character development of "the losers" is written. King has great vision, but sometimes i think his vision becomes to big even for him to understand and IT is a perfect example.

It was almost like this in the book as well, they faught him as a spider when they were kids in the book, the same as they did when they were adults. The spider resembles the closest their minds will let them get to seeing IT's true form, which is nothing more than a big mass of light, that takes the shape of whatever they're afraid of.
