It's interesting that they got Keanu(KEY NEO) Reeves to play the part of Neo, the One, the Magician, in a movie symbolic of the fool's journey thru each Tarot(Torah) card in its proper sequence. You csn almost say that he was "born" for the role, synchronistically speaking.

Folks, anyone purporting to truly know tarot should know that almost all movies have tarot correspondences -- the tarot is special because it represents fundamental human archetypes! And archetypes by definition don't have one representation, be it magician (doctor), empress (wife), or hierophant (teacher). But of course it is exciting to notice similarities, but no larger transcendent revelation is announced.

i disagree on the associations. To just refer to the beginning. The magician is the one who prepares the world for the arival of the fool which is the avatar. The magician is the pontifex, the bridge builder who has the task to connect the above with the below. The fool is the son of god manifesting as the fool. The fool follows the smell of the rose, looking backwards, walking forwards towards the abbys. New Aeon = foolsworld. He represents the 0. not an "either=or" but rather an "as well as".

This is a great analysis. The Major Arcana of the Tarot has a pattern for the hero's Journey that has been used countless times in movies- the most well known being Star Wars, both the individual films and the entire series as a whole.

The masterpiece in this realm has to be The Wizard of Oz, a prototypical hero's journey written by L. Frank Baum, who was a member of the Theosophical Society - it's no accident the Hero's Journey is incorporated into it.

Really interesting. The only suggestions I would make would be to make Morpheous the Hierophant (think about his role connected to religion) and Smith the Emperor (bringing in the negative aspects of that card).

I would have to agree with you given the Martial energies associated with Aries and the Emperor card. However the Hierophant card's negative qualities( or when reversed) can indicate Saturnian limitation; materialism and misogyny. In the last film it is said that Smith is Neo's opposite. So in Platonic terms, Neo would be the Unlimited and Smith the Limited and thus cancel on another out. However you are right it is a better fit given its Martial characteristics.

Intersting, nonetheless analogy can be found between everything. For example card death doesn't need to mean deth itself (as most people got used to understand this word). Meaning of this card is rather change/transformation. Death can fit also to the scene, where neo takes the red pill and awakes from the "unreal" matrix... But what I wanted to say is, that it would be short-sighted to strongy associate each card with one part of the movie.

The Hanged Man doesn't always appear in the same position, there are Tarot decks where he's hanged differently, though almost always upside down.

Im not dissing the video. I think its entertaing. I like movies like the Matrix. But really tarot was only really meant to be a card game. The Fools Journey and all that other stuff has no real historical connection with what its supposed to be. We might be spammers but we serve a good purpose. Whichever interpretation of the Tarot (esoteric or not) you consider to be the "real" one does not change the fact both have their followers. I don't claim the Tarot is esoteric, I just claim there are people who do. And this analysis of "The Matrix" only makes sense when looking at that interpretation. It is obviously a spiritual movie in many ways, so if I'm right and they hid the Tarot structure in there on purpose, they obviously had in mind the esoteric interpretation, "real" or not.

This is really about a tarot meme called "Fool's Journey" It is not directly related to the cards but about a certain interpretation of them. I'm not surprised that someone could read that kind of meaning regardless of the film maker's actual intent. I've seen tarot symbolism in other films especially in German silent films. Dr Caligari is a mountebank or magician. The Tower appears many times in Metropolis. I could give other examples.

The cards were actually "meant to be" a card game and not divination. That's what history tells us. Tarockspieler is being factually correct and I am glad there are people now telling the truth about these cards. The way Tarot cards are often presented in countries such as the US needs some revision because it is doing some collateral damage to certain aspects of culture. Divination itself isn't harmful, it is the perception that Tarot is ONLY used for divination which is causing problems.

This really helped to lay a foundation of understanding. You should elaborate on this video. Most people take a very negative look at pop culture and think evil conspiracy; but I see this story as very positive and strong role models. It's a B movie...but deeper.

I see it more as social conditioning - to encourage acceptance from people of the ideas promoted in film. It is positive in that - yes - these things may play out (the 'new world'), but is negative in that it will have the complex effect of making most people play the 'pawn' role. Hi, nice video, but my impression is that the tarot is like a book that contains everything that humanity can be and do, so finding connections or relationships with a movie is irrelevant. Tarot is related to ALL made by man. It´s because its full of archtypes, and they are universal. Try to find relationship with any other movie, ANY, and you will find strong relationships. Thats my honest opinion, and a recommendation: Use the Restored Camoin´s Tarot de Marseille, That´s the ONE. Greets!

Similarities are always gradual. You could find parallels between any two movies, for example. So of course you could find similarities between the Tarot and any movie, as well.

The question is how far you get and how significant those similarities really are. I think that the Tarot has a lot more meaningful similarities to the Matrix than it has to most movies. The references are much more numerous than in other movies (such as Matrix Reloaded or Matrix Revolutions) I think.

As a Tarot Instructor, I agree with you...there are far more connections between the Tarot and "The Matrix" than in other movies, even "Reloaded" and "Revolutions". The connection between Tarot and "The Hero's Journey", as presented by Joseph Campbell, is well known. As Hollywood tends to follow this format, Hangler is right...you can find associations in most movies. However, the number and strength of the associations and connections, dpwn to the numerology etc, is staggering.
