Admittedly, Katie Holmes sounds awful and should not take on a career as a singer- but it was a moving and genuine (acting) performance. You can very much see her fear and vulnerability. It was the first time she really expressed her feelings for Dawson. It made him really see her for who she was- not just the tomboy next door. The scene following this was pretty awesome, too. It looks pretty retarded taken out of the context of the show.
