XTC is one of the greatest bands of all time, and it is a damn shame that XTC is not widely recognized. All one has to do is pay close attention to their songs from Skylarking, English Settlement, and other albums to see what XTC is capable of. The music is staggering in its power to move the listener emotionally, not to mention the technical skills of these musicians -- especially for lovers of acoustic guitar.
It's called interesting and intelligent music, performed by one of the most revered bands in pop music, XTC (no doubt you were here thinking the XTC on offer was drugs. Duh).
Obviously this is WAAAAYYY above your head, so bye bye!!
I read that Andy didn't think they ever picked up all of those dolls in the field and he joked something to the ring of "Some day in the future when they're using plastic detectors they'll find all those dolls and wonder if they had something to do with a cult".
One of my fav British bands, love em, and my fav of their songs, the percussion is awesome throughout. They were also very good at producing videos for under £50, this being a good example (not a criticism).
Hope there is still much to come from Mssers Partridge and Moulding.
I understand this song is about stealing and slavery. I've heard it before and own the album Mummer but I'm going to say this now, I'm reminded of Avatar.
I really like when pop artist write songs about historical subjects. That being said, slavery is still a huge problem in the world. This is a really well done song. They tell it how it is. No sugarcoating. Evil is evil. Those who choose to serve evil become it's slave.
I have to say on a whole that Mummer is very underrated as XTC albums go. It's one of my favorites.
Can't say I agree with the conventional wisdom on Mummer (and The Big Express for that matter). Both albums are treasures to me - XTC at their most experimental yet still wonderfully musical, finding a distinct voice in a musical era known mostly for it's sameness and lack of adventure.
A complete mis-fire as a single though. Granted, Mummer presented difficult choices for any singles, IMHO, but Wonderland should not have made the cut.
This video was made (along with Love on a Farmboy's Wages, Funk Pop A Roll, In Loving Memory of a Name and Beating of Hearts) specially for a Channel Four programme called 'Play at Home'.
I think it's here somewhere on YouTube in its entirety.
this is my xtc,- they are the best since genesis to me. so straight guys and yet so outwordly gifted musicians---I know what i like, and it is British Understatement!!
I love old Genesis (have you heard the recent remastered versions?) and I think XTC was the best band of the last 30 years! Both bands were too intelligent for mass consumption.
Because the critics at that time were commissioned to promote, not critique. What has "sellability" was promoted. And as much as I like Peter Gabriel, he was never quite the talent that Andy Partridge is.
gosh...how i love xtc...they were such a god to me...

I used to think I was the only one who liked old Genesis and XTC together. Most people divided them by decade/genre...completely pointless.

Dhassp 2 years ago
from "mummer", which i strongly recommed you to buy. it is cheap, underrated and abundant 2nd hand, but it has in fact not one weak song on it i find
MoveOverCasanova 2 years ago 3
I would humbly submit Wonderland as being one of the weakest of their catalogue...and the worst choice of a single in their career.
geech55 2 years ago
Disagree - I like Wonderland very much.

Why is Mummer considered to be such a mediocre album from the critics
