im doing this play for my acting clas...(not the whole thing) I play as jerry and in this video he makes up some line or gets them completely wrong, i start from "I said i want this bench, and im going to have it, so get overe there." and i have all my lines memorized and i know for a fact that this guy is a terrible actor..(im directing this towards the guy playing jerry)
this guy is just way too nice for the role of jerry. supposed to be a bully. i guess nowadays you could just place some menacing incoherent nyc nig for a real-life scary effect.
The actor attempting to play Jerry is absolutely TURGID. All attitude with NO CLUE of how to play an objective. He actually paraphrases and adds his own dialogue to the text. PUKE!!! Oh, and by the way -- Jerry doesn't use foul language. You should try reading the whole play sometime, idiot.
i am currently studying Zoo story, and considering the intensity of the piece, which Albee uses...what an hour and a half before this section to build, you got the climatic structure really well..and also Zoo story when it is performed is really funny, but considering the lack of time you and as well and you were also improvising i think that this is really good! thanks, it has helped me visualize this section of Zoo Story for my exams!
oh and 4. WachyXP, if you like regurgitated material so much, watch more TV. What ever happened to people taking a piece of work and making it there own.
Haha I just saw this. I am the guy with the beard. A few comments.
1. I had no idea people gave a shit enough to sit here and criticize a video. Did you know that this video is on the same website where "You bit me, Charlie!" is the #1 video.
2. I am a comedian. Sorry for the comedic tone. I am no 5-minute Jim Carrey.
3. Soren Viuf is the shit. Everything he puts out is fucking awesome. You guys should check out some of the projects that don't fit on YouTube.
You can do the zoo story as you wish, but this is not an interesting choice. You have a shy character and a talkative character, this is all that you have.
Try to create a man who was no body to REALLY talk with, and the play will start to walk.
I am writing my university thesis paper on Albee's 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?', plus I am a member of a drama group with whom we performed it and I played Honey; so I feel close to Albee's works, and that's why I viewed this video. And I tell you, this is exactly how I imagined Peter while I was reading 'Zoo Story'.:)
Hehe I'm not talking about clothes. Like, Jerry doesn't sit down until he is done with his monologue and as far as his character can be interpreted, and I have observed a lot for this one, he doesn't touch people at all - only when he tickles him, which is like a breakthrough. By the way, this is not a comedy, it's a very tragic play. Almost everything you need to know about Jerry and Peter is written in the monologue, which describes the same thing that happens between the 2 guys. :)
Okay I certainly don't disagree with you, but let me just explain the constraints of the project: It had a 4-minute limit (which I broke) and it was a very hurried casting and rehearsal process (about a week), so I selected the segment of the play which could be easily memorized and give equal number of lines to both characters, not to mention have a semi-climactic structure. Hence the line changes (some of which were improvised) and blocking.
it's not about the opinion of the actor, it's about the author, and he didn't write 20 jerries, but one, and pretty clearly :) i don't think he can be interpreted in so many different ways. :)
I agree with you; but, I do think it has too much of a 'light', 'comedic' tone. I understand, though, given your time restraints. But, I really liked the actor of Jerry: if done fully, I think he could do it well enough to shut up all the other people complaining. One last thing: if the same actor plays Jerry, a different actor should play Peter. They don't really seem to work well together. Peter is, in my opinion, the main reason people have disagreed with this interpratation. Just my opinion.
It doesnt have to be exactly the same characters. I couldnt agree more with Aqualung. Actor/director interpretations are what make acting so fun. My friend and I just did this part as a duet for a forensics tournament where Jerry was way over-the-top crazy and Peter got progressively angrier until he was full scale yelling at Jerry. We got first place with it. So, interpretations are not in any way bad.
What's with all the line changes? Albee wrote some very beautiful lines, not just a good story, you should stick to them. I'm all up for interpretation, but don't change the source so unnecessarily.
I really like your Jerry. Not as dark a character as I interpreted him when I played him, could really see where you were going with it and would really like to see that character done throughout the whole show. Most of the lines were very well delivered..most of the lines.
Yeah, the lines were changed to sound less dated and goofy, which, don't deny it, some of them are. Also, this was a straightforward directing scene and I only had a few minutes, so I wanted to have more of a bookended structure, rather than just a segment-of-a-play.
I doubt the people who said "what a hell?" (And what the fuck at that anyway?)... and "wow. this sucks" never actually READ The Zoo Story... nor do they know who Albee even is.
I'm doing the end of this play for my final exam next week. Thanks for posting this; every resource helps.

the Zoo Story is kind of investigation rather than a conversation... there are Jerries and Peters everywhere...

i didnt say im a perfect actor, and i didnt mean to say he is a terrible actor but i dont get why het threw in some random line in here and there

Mr. Albee, who guards his work fiercely, would KILL these actors, chase them off the stage. Otherwise, these actors have range.

next time try not rewriting the script.

the man who played jerry was not tormented or weary enough. he did not have that gentle wit eaither that those lines bring

Don't think much of the actor playing peter but Jerry is good

Really, though, just because he's not wearing a leather jacket doesn't mean he's all that different. I'd really like to see "your" Jerry.

this is not the zoo story by edward albee, i am playing it now and this is not even close to the characters =/

That's what is great about having different actors and directors with different opinions.
