@uxbram You are so lucky! that must have been the best gift ever! I'm seeing Waters when he tours from this year into the next. Still waiting for David though. Hard to believe this tour was 4 years ago.
I was at this show, front row center and it was absolutely mind-blowing. One of the best concerts I have EVER seen in my short life. RIP Rick. Got Rick to shoot me a thumbs up. The playing was impeccable as was the music unleashed on the crowd.
singing-wise, yes. but at Live8 Waters was nasty on bass. and keep in mind he did write the lyrics of this song and most of the others in the Floyd repertoire.
While that's technically correct, bookmdano, I can pretty much guarantee that's not how Gilmour and Waters (and Mason, don't forget) will be remembering Rick Wright. They'll be focusing on his many accomplishments in his short 65 years on the planet. After all, that's the subject of Gilmour's "On An Island", isn't it? "It's about how friends live on in your memories after they're gone." (RTN DVD)
I might have seen about 20 different versions of this song, but this is number one. Rick sings this song as if he was an angel, and David plays with his strings as if he were just fooling around. Still it might just be the best version of the solo as well. I love the guy hwo taped it and downloaded it. Can you vote 6/5?
Its all over the net: Mason said 2 months ago in a flash TV interview he spoke to Waters and he consented, so it was now up to David. Im wondering when will you realize that Gilmour is the one that makes that music so perfect. I wouldnt like Pink Floyd so much when there wouldnt stay an awesome Guitarman. Aye and i wouldnt like them so much if there would stay someone else that cant Play like him. Gilmour alone can Play like that perfectely without others . Guitarsound dont need good text.Yes and its Gilmour that know how to play cool solos . its not Waters that telling him about the Style he plays . so Gilmour is the point.
You're absolutely correct . . . and that is something I, too, have been arguing for a long time.
Listen, there are a LOT of people who resent that Gilmour entered the fray, as if Floyd could keep writing about and singing about "Apples & Oranges" into the 1970s.
Roger is the better lyricist and main conceptual artist, but he is not the brains. To say that suggests the others were simply his side men which was not the case. Where Roger was more devoted to songwriting the others chose to focus more on musicianship to complement his strong lyrics.
Dave alone is not the soul, but the playing and singing of both Dave and Rick are the soul of Pink Floyd. Without their playing Pink Floyd's music would not be so timeless and moving 40 years later and counting.
What about Rick Wright, hes the best! lol, But overall, Roger is the lyricist, Gilmour put it together with music, and Syd barrett kicked Pink floyd off with Arnold Layne and was a huge inspiration to both, noticed in many of their songs they wrote about him
It's kinda funny. If they had Mason with them, it'd be Pink Floyd. I mean, even the backing band has played with PF for what, 20 years? How lame to leave Nick Mason out. It's always been like that. Wright and Gilmour, Mason and Waters. Hasn't Mason done something with Waters lately? Could be my imagination.
Mason did play a few songs on one of Gilmour's concerts. But he didn't work on Gilmour's solo album, so why would he tour with them? It's not like they're married, there's no need to look for reasons behind it.
And yes, Mason played on some of Waters' concerts.
Jemdrix, Pink is a combination of Water and Barrett. He says so in the Wall's commentary. Roger Water's dad died in the second world war... Pink's dad died in a war. But Syd's mom was overprotective, which is what the song "mother" is about. It's a combination
Syd, Roger, Dave, Rick and Nick are Pink. Not anyone member. When will people realize that no one member is bigger than the band. When Roger started that whole "Which one's Pink?" nonsense back in the 80's he was so clearly not in a healthy mental state.
not alone mate... i have betted with my brother that i can do the first solo of this song within 6 months... 10,000kr thats about 2000 us $.. so i have to make it... lol..
Gilmour is the music, Roger is the lyrics. I think good rock music is a combination of both. This makes Gilmour a better musician but Roger a better lyricist. As for who exactly is 'Pink' it's neither, Syd Barrett is Pink.
David Gilmour hands down is the better musician . Rodger is a competant bass player , and a decent guitarist. David takes it all to a higher level . Rodger was always comfortable with his bass playing , David was always pushing his guitar playing . JMO
I know I'm going to get attacked for this, but my vote is on Roger Waters. Overall, vocally for sure. On the guitar Doyle Bramhall II on In The Flesh. When I listen to David Gilmour play here, he just sounds stale and a bit slow in some parts, but great in others. Bramhall pours everything into that guitar, and the emotion you get out of that solo... I don't feel anymore from David. Thats jmo though.
This year I found "DSOTM" Vinyl, barely touched, in my fathers collection...I'm sure he played it, but if he would have played it more, maybe I would have found Pink Floyd earlier, and been fortuned to go on a consert with David!? Since I found them 2 years ago, I've been playing them almost every day. They also were "re-born" for my fatehr..and this year we saw Roger Waters...very very good show! /Floyd 4ever!
theres so much argument, on whos a better musisian waters or gilmore, in my eyes, (now i dint make this up i got it from a different post, but feal the same way) waters is the brains of PF cause he wrote alot of the material but lacks alot of emotion playing well takes, and gilmore is the heart, he plays with so much emotion
The argument isn't who's a better musician... because among everything else, Gimour played bass better than Roger... I think the argument is: who was "Pink"? My answer is both....
...Let's not begin to pretend that David Gilmour's solo tour(s?) remotely compare in scope or longevity to what Roger Waters has been doing for the past seven years.
Gilmour never sought the scope that you speak of (i.e. just simply doing stadium/arena rock concerts) but rather purposefully chose to do smaller venues. The inevitable result is that fewer people could see a Gilmour show and then paid upwards of $600 in NYC and $500 in Toronto to see him.
I can assure you that with all respect to Roger Waters and his intelligence (not genius) as far as rock stars go (if you want "genius" pick up a book as intellectuals are not found in pop music), Gilmour's musicianship illustrates beyond a shadow of a doubt where the Pink Floyd sound came from. You need only listen to the dilapidated Waters(minus "Amused" where he had Beck mimic the Gilmour atmospherical soundscape) to realize how much Gilmour was missed.
Why Gilmour does not use visuals is strange for a former member of Floyd. But remember, Gilmour used the biggest visuals in the history of music on the PULSE (aka Division Bell tour). At the same time Syd and the old Floyd line-up were big on visuals before Gilmour came so in some ways he was not part of that original history.
No matter how many times you listen to this song, It will always Stagger you the power this thing has.Quite Possibly the Most Beautiful Harmonized Songs of all times, Goes Beyond words. Loved to See a concert with them and Rogers together again.
I saw him on this tour first in Hamburg, then in Austria, and I can tell you he is the most wonderful musician you ever can listen to.always worth the money,no matter what the tickets costs. go and see him while you have the chance...
Rick Wright was also a huge part in the success of pink floyd from wish you were here album and before. He is not in the spotlight very much, but he deserves to be, because he contributed a lot in the success of early pf to mid pf.
They both but on good damn live shows, but there is something missing when you go and see roger waters live,Gilmour's tone. Roger Waters would not look as much of a genius if it were not for Gilmour, and likewise. No one should say who is the genius behind pf, if they didn't have one or the other, pf would have probably washed away in the late 60s and early 70s. They both are extremely and equally talented musicians.
For all the people that say Roger Waters is the genius behind Pink Floyd, Well they are PARTIALLY correct. Roger Waters was without a doubt a mastermind of lyric writing and basic song writing, but the sound, the tone, the atmosphere, the solos, even some of the vocal harmonies we think of pink floyd, but that is all because of Gilmour. Without Gilmour, Roger Waters would not be nearly as successful as he is now, likewise with Gilmour.
I was lucky enough to see both of Gilmours shows at massey hall and they were the best ive ever seen. I have seen two of rogers shows but they just dont compare to this. The is one of the if not the best solo i have ever seen David play. I think he is the greatest guitarist of all time.
damn, I really should have myself over to T.O. for at least one of the Gilmour shows. I will come to regret that . . . but won't let it happen again.
And, by the way, I totally agree. Waters puts on a great show. Gilmour puts on a great show. But Gilmour wins by a nudge because he IS the epic musicianship behind the Pink Floyd Sound.
I just saw Roger Waters in Toronto on the 14th... and I was lucky enough to see Gilmour at this concert here... and with Richard Wright on keyboards, it was by far a better performance... hes the guitarist of floyd for christsakes...
David Gilmour puts so much soul and spirit into his playing! Cool thing about him is that he was getting the cool delayed effects in the early 70's before ANYONE else!!
If a terrorist came to my home tonight and shoved a stick of dynomite up his ass and blew peices of me all over the wall. I Don't f in care. I have seen/done bad, I have loved, I have seen freedom, And I have seen Pulse Live in person. And now I have seen this. Extra bonus. Where is my pine box.
Yes, the actual rhythm was too slow. The version from the 1980's was not as good as it had been in its original tempo. When Roger Waters plays it live, and apparently now David as well, he keeps it in the same time as it was written. I wasn't sying that it was "too dark" I was saying that they slowed it down toom much, but they must have realised it and returned to performing it the way it was meant to be.
I love this song so much. I've seen and heard many versions of the song (none in person, unfortunately), and this version stepped it up a notch or two. Absolutely fantastic.
I ve heard the "Flesh" with Waters, other non PF versions too. Comfortably Numb breaths through Gilmour. Everything else sounds like amateur music or something. Even if he is not looking like he used to do, he can play gittar like only a few can. RESPECT.
David Gilmour does what he loves... and loves what he does. that is to play and keep us wanting more

Rick Wright was also a huge part in the success of pink floyd from wish you were here album and before. He is not in the spotlight very much, but he deserves to be, because he contributed a lot in the success of early pf to mid pf.
Echoing1313 4 years ago

I saw them live on Denmark

No one can play that Solo like Gilmour can.
Absolutely Amazing.

This is my favourite Floyd song as well. This song makes me cry. David Gilmour: what a legend.

David Gilmour puts so much soul and spirit into his playing! Cool thing about him is that he was getting the cool delayed effects in the early 70's before ANYONE else!!

This is MUCH better than the version Gilour was doing with Pink Floyd in the late 80's (and early 90's) which was too down tempo.
THEDEEDEEZOMBIE 4 years ago
Too down tempo?? Welcome to Pink Floyd bro... you obviously haven't been paying much attention.
xroguessj 4 years ago
Yes, the actual rhythm was too slow. The version from the 1980's was not as good as it had been in its original tempo. When Roger Waters plays it live, and apparently now David as well, he keeps it in the same time as it was written. I wasn't sying that it was "too dark" I was saying that they slowed it down toom much, but they must have realised it and returned to performing it the way it was meant to be.

I love this song so much. I've seen and heard many versions of the song (none in person, unfortunately), and this version stepped it up a notch or two. Absolutely fantastic.

Actually, I have a feeling, David expresses well the emotional pain through this song....via his play on the guitar...

I ve heard the "Flesh" with Waters, other non PF versions too. Comfortably Numb breaths through Gilmour. Everything else sounds like amateur music or something. Even if he is not looking like he used to do, he can play gittar like only a few can. RESPECT.
