  • It would be nice to see a Gladiator as well.

  • 'the most ' Bombed place in the World ' I have heard, this is great film tribute with the perfect sound track / music, thankyou ...

  • So many killed , so much destruction, we were in the war by default. And the Brits. were discussing handing Malta over to the Germans for a while. Read your history folks.

  • @1stREMESquaddie. I certainly agree that the Maltese people were never asked if they wanted to take part in WWII. I also know that that there was serious doubt at the time about whether Malta be adequately defended against an AXIS attack. Could you elaborate on your statement that Britain considered handing over Malta to the Germans. I have never heard this assertion made before and would be very interested to learn more.

  • @colorgrinder It was a very close call, the govener of Malta was at his wits end, try reading these two books, Malta Spitfire by George Berlang & Leslie Roberts also Fortress Malta By Jmaes Holland, The Luftwaffe were taken from the Malta siege to deal with the Russians so a breather in the air war saved the day.

  • tears in my eye viva malta viva inglaterra

  • malta is the only country to get the victory cross

  • @terry123416 Nearly right... Malta was awarded the George Cross, the highest award a civilian can be awarded in Britain.

  • Aircraft with the flat/straighter leading edge wing is a Hurricane... not a Spit

  • Viva Malta!

  • Always brings tears to my eyes to see these two aircraft over Grand Harbour, knwing what it means to the Maltese people, and to my family. My grandmother is Maltese and remembers seeing these aircraft as a child during the siege between 1940 and 1943.

Malta endured so so much at the hands of the Axis, bombing more ferocious than the Blitz or the Battle of Britian...and still came through. May the sacrifices never be forgotten.

  • Goose bumps !!

    Hurricane and Spitfire!

  • Goose bumps!!

  • mein got! this should have a health warning. fantastic

  • shame the R.A,F, are not their anymore...however i respect the malteese peoples wishes...

  • great to see spits over malta again, they saved britain and of course the great island of malta...

  • my dad was stationed there on mtb's during the seige, sure he must have seen this sight every day and felt good that we had these lovely creations on our side.God bless the maltese people, the british people and the peoples of the old empire whatever anyone say's. A different breed and a flicker of light in very dark times.

  • my grandad was stationed there during the seige on the anti aircraft guns

  • exelent vid. ,.good music too!

    love it.

  • One is a Spitfire, the other a Hurricane. Both aircraft were powered by Rolls Royce Merlin Aircraft engines, 1750 hp. Super Charged! My father during WW II was at 14, loading the ammunition belts of the 303 Browning machine guns (before th 40 mm cannons were fitted) for those who fought for the freedom of Europe during the Battle of Britain

  • Absolutely glorious! Could do without the music though, those Merlins make their own music!

  • Merlins and classical music... best combination ever!

  • The real flying hero's of Malta were Faith, Hope & Charity... Look it up.

  • Ecellent filming and editing .... thank you!

Yes, Spitfire and Hurricane look superb especially flying over heroic Malta and music works well.. Very good display flying too, showing the aircraft off well. They suit the clear blue skies!

  • If i had the choice to wed the most beautiful model in the world or to pilot one of those for an hour... obvious choice, i'd have the Spitfire

  • Oh nice Merlins! But! Where are the BF109!!! :-))) Wo bleiben die Messerschmitt!!! :-)

  • @powerheli777 In the sea.

  • @RRAvon hahahahahaha!!!!! thats good!!!

  • @powerheli777 Only kidding lol, that was a little harsh.

  • @powerheli777 well, Beurling shot down a record 25 or so proving the ME of BF were inferior to a great plane and pilot, but i can see the die-hard Heil Hitler salutes, arms raised high, as they slowly disappear under the waves of the med. sea

  • A beautiful place.

  • Friking A bub..I got goosebumps!!

thank GOD its a MkIV not a IX

  • Makes me proud to be a Maltese aviation enthusiast. Iconic planes around the Grand Harbour, perfect backdrop to such a special aircraft. Touching video excellent music.

  • Waghorn41.....thank you for your uncles sacrifice......believe me he will never be forgotten by us and we will always watch over him.

  • Thank you for posting this, unfortunately I couldn't be there but I did make a small donation to the fund to help this happen. My uncle was a Hurricane pilot who died in the defence of the island in 1941, and is buried there.

  • @waghorn41 God bless him

  • GOOD SHOW!

The sight and sound of these things is special anywhere, even more so over Malta.

  • Thank you Fortress Malta and its Maltese heroes !! without your strength we would not of stopped the Nazis ....thanks to the RAF and NAVY ..both US and British ...For your sacrafice ...we will not forget !!

  • Thank you for posting this marvellous video. A fantastic tribute to the greatest generation.

  • Pardon my grammar but it is sure nice to see those two spitfires flying over Malta. Thanks for the video and well done! I'm willing to wager that if George Beurling would have been there he would have buzzed the crowd for sure.

  • I read about George Beurling's exploits in 'Malta Spitfire' when I was a teenager. It's about time I dug it out again. Thanks for the comment.

  • one of those Spitfires is a Hawker Hurricane

  • @kn1ghtstemplar

    yes,I noticed that .

  • @windsorwindow ONE SPITFIRE the other is a Hurricane

  • @kn1ghtstemplar .. true. There is one Hurricane and one Spitfire in my video. I noticed the Hurricane while shooting my clip but failed to mention this as I just ad libbed the commentary on the spot. We lost a lot of men in those Hurricanes so that is why it is part of our memorial. We had a Lancaster bomber there, previously. Windsor plans on building a museum for that.

  • @kn1ghtstemplar Right on !!

  • @windsorwindow One Spitfire and second is Hawker Hurricane

  • @windsorwindow what a biutifull sight i'm shore he would have...... but he got blown up over rome...... ps the blue one is the spit the other one's a Hurricane.

  • @bamsawa Thanks for correcting me: one Spitfire, one Hurricane -- affirmative.

  • @windsorwindow In fact it was a Spitfire and Hurricane, both powered by Merlin engines.

  • god blees malta and england and d spitfire

  • God bless BRITAIN and the brave MALTESE !!!

  • Excellent video, wish i was there on that day

  • Being of Maltese descent, and a young boy, I was an avid model builder. My mother used to take me to the large department store and my reward was a model plane to build. I wanted them all, she said pick one. I asked her favorite and she said "Spitfire" without a moments hesitation. Those pilots saved her remaining family back in Malta during the war...... God Bless em....

  • Thank your family back in Malta...lovely brave people !!

  • my early memories of Malta were at a seaboat area known as Kalafrana, I was with my father who was an aIrframe fitter with the RAF. I was very young but had many Maltese friends and have great memories but when I come in the summer I find no trace of anything that I can remember with the exception of Hal far. Is Kalafrana now called Birzebuggia?

  • I would help you if I could mate, but Hal Far now is only a detention centres for Illegal Immigrants and on most of it lie the R.A.F Barracks I believe

    Kalafrana...never heard of it

Birzebbugia is actually on the coast though, there is Marsaxlokk beside it

  • thanks for the reply. Iwent to the Bocca club in Birzebuggia where one oldish man told me that if you know where to look there are remains of the raf base known as Kalafrana,it has been swallowed up into Birzebuggia but if you look at even the latest motoring map it still shows Kalafrana to the west of pretty bay/ Birzebuggia. I also went to Mtarfa where I was born in the military hospital and visited the commonwealth war graves near Ta`Qali. We have booked again to come back next year.

  • Looks like Birzebbugia is now where Kalafrana was. Kalafrana was a flying boat/ seaplane base.

  • God bless Malta and Britain

  • I was there into that big block of flat ( my house). I was on the roof at that time and they came at about 100ft above me. it was a great moment.

My dream came true seeing, feeling smell the merlin engine.

  • awesome

  • Hail the bravery of the Maltese people, the British, Commonwealth and other Allied pilots who fought in the battles in the seas and skies around Malta. All for the liberty that we take for granted today.

  • and Gozo of course ;) such a beautiful place...

  • God bless Malta and Britain

  • that is the very speldend thing that a maltese person can see well done uploder !

  • my god.listen to those engines!the plane has a soul!

  • Onore alla REGIA AERONAUTICA! Onore all' ITALIA! Onore agli equipaggi degli SM 79!

  • beautiful, i remember that event, we're staying on the other part of the harbour. by the way, what't the name of this music?

  • nimrod elgar

  • As soon as I saw that first spitfire, the hairs on my arms shot up, fantastic piece of footage, the music compliments the video perfectly and i like the way you can still hear the merlins over the soundtrack

    Well done

  • Malta seems blessed to have had the best of both worlds for centuries with even Napolean ridding the island of the inquisition and later tha British keeping the place free of occupation by a tyranical force from nearby Italy. God is truly on the side of this tiny but brave nation. God bless Malta and Gozo.

  • top marks to you for this clip.makes me proud to be british,as i am anyway.two of the best influential planes to ever to take to the sky with what must be the most patriotic sound track ever. we must never forget the men who lost their lifes defending a free world and the people of malta also who refused to give in to the nazi regime! i wept when i first saw this clip but watch it often,it is so moving. we will all die one day but britain will live on for ever.

  • As a qualified Pilot, it is my lifes dream to fly a Supermarine Spitfire, on of the most beautiful machines ever to fly. Nimrod and the spit really brought a tear to my eye. 5 stars!

  • God bless the Maltese people for standing up for Democracy and Freedom in 1939-45!

  • What a wonderful tribute to a brave Island, god bless you Malta GC

  • Malta sat on Rommels supply route, raids from there sank something like half all the supplies sent to North Africa. The Germans decided it was time to crush this impudent island and for a time, Malta was the most bombed place on earth. Short of food and supplies, the islanders endured. They certainly earned the George Cross.

  • I believe by placing the george cross on our flag was more of a sign of loyalty from ourselves rather than your king who by nowadays accounts for nothing since royalty age is over. We never asked for compensation for directing us into a bloodbath war we could have opened our arms to germans and gave in. But we didnt we also fought for freedom of the world and that is what makes us maltese and the allies like-minded

  • Our King is now pushing up daisies. We've had a queen since 1952, but anyway, like you say, Malta deserves the recognition for standing up for freedom.

  • 10x for the recognition...britain also fought till the end so we were basically in the same situation as they...thats why we never complained.

  • not viva thats Italian. Long live Malta G.C.

  • Viva Malta!!

  • I found this video very moving. I have always liked the Spitfire and Hurricane, but we must remember the chaps who flew and maintained them in the second world war. What better background than Grand Harbour, memories of my service days there.

  • Could'nt agree more. Top draw!

  • Absolutley fabulous, and very moving.

  • Brings a tear to the eye, not only those planes with there lovely engines but the people of malta who won there countrys medal, seeing them roar over the country once more must make everyone proud!!! it sure does me.

  • Hi this is really great video. The music choosen ( Nimrod from Enigma Variations ) really fitys perfectly with the engine roars of the Merlins.

  • i was crying when i saw this :D kemm kbejt!!!

  • Great video! Awesome planes - our deepest gratitude to the brave pilots who risked or gave their lives to defend freedom and our Malta!

  • Lovely,Thanks so much!

  • Merlins over Malta, What wonderful video.

    Thank you for posting.

  • I was there 2 years ago what a sight out of this world

  • great video, on my youtube i have another video, but not as good

  • omg, an arse speaks!

if you forget then you have learnt nothing.

  • great planes those spitfires, they saved great britain too..

  • Great video. Felt like I was there myself

  • They were the best days of my life.

  • Lovely Video, but as much as I love Nimrod and the rest of Elgar's Enigma Variations, I feel that the Merlin can speak for it's self! But still thankyou for posting.
