Ted talks are going downhil. How can a person talk that long and say nothing. Hackneyed driblble in my opinion. I know, I must be one of those negative people. A pseudo Dr. Phill.
Liked the video, but i was really dissapointed when she said the number wrong. Come on, she is a lawyer, she should know that 400,000,000,000 is four hundred thousand millons, and not four hundred trillions, which would be 400,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
Its a really big mistake, and i also think that the correct number is four hundred trillions; four hundred thousand millions is too low for that probability.
Life is a miracle in itself, but how did the maths work out for, first decision tea for the wife, following the quick get up thing gives me a head ache. But activation energy sounds positive, the brain is a lot more complicated than the two sides, variety sounds like the best answer. The 5 second action makes so much sense and that was brilliant Mel, thank you.
Even though much of this is stating the obvious; I still like this lady's conviction and think that this video is a valuable motivator. My thanks to Full Plate Marketing for sharing video . Watch this. It reminds us to take action, step up, and just do it.
Her 1st major point was the implication of "fine" and after listening to her explanations why it's just a word that masks how we really feel (which i actually agree unless you really do feel fine) she comes up with a reason for me to feel fantastic and that's a number guess - estimates by some scientists.....yeah lady like that's gonna work. She annoys me.
I really needed to hear this, I have 3 things I am working on that are my life dream and I keep putting of, Mel gave me the kick in the pants I needed. Thank you! And yes it is very American :)
Love this talk by Mel. End of the day, it comes down to being impeccable with your words. Knowing what you are saying to yourself and follow through on it. I actually just made a video based on this talk when I decided that I will not exercise today. Thank you Mel.
Love it that's to taking responsibility for your own life. Absolutely right get up and do, get out of your routine do what you would like to do, stop sabotaging your self...do it. A kick in the Butt needed thank you Mel.
Mel sez: "...it's your job to make yourself do the crap you don't want to do so you can be EVERYTHING you're supposed to be."
Hunh?! What in blazes is she implying? What the hell is anyone SUPPOSED to be?
I'm having an axiomatic problem with all this. It's very American, no offense. But, I suppose the silver lining in watching it, is it gives me more impetus to study real Zen philosophy (not translated and bastardized by north american consciousness but true happiness WITHOUT burning desires).
The feeling issue.... there is a clear difference between feelings that are 'the impulse' she was talking about and the egoic, habitual, insecure, negative self-talk we allow ourselves to feel. The first comes from excitement & creativity, the second from fear & pain. Your *real* gut feelings will always steer you well, but they are easily masked by the other. Practice listening & you'll become familiar with the real you.
ok some part no like ,,,always be aware of your feelings ..awareness is the one of the keys to freedom ,, other than that its a good vid ,,,just how i feel ,,,
Man shes got that right.I have to push my self to get up and get going. Here a say I use on my self ITs not going to do it its self. the pans are not going to jump up and put them self on the stove and cook my meals and bring it to me.And a tree didnt just jump and a say HAy I'm a giant tree..get it.
Powerful, hard-hitting, straight to the point. Thank heavens I stumbled across your presentation - just when I was "not feeling like it". As soon as I press the 'post' button I'm going straight out to my studio to get on with doing it. And tomorrow morning I shall not even wait 1 second ...
Will be on the look out to see more of your videos. I just finished my last class yesterday and am on my way to read your book now that I am not chained to a text book. ;) I know what I want and am in a slow forward motion trying to getting "it". Not exactly sure - but I am going to try that 5 second thing. I'll let ya know how it works out for me. ;)
Love this video. I searched for you after hearing your interview with Darren Hardy in Success mag a few months ago and reading your book, Stop saying you're fine. Thanks for instituting your own 5 sec rule and helping me to start getting what I want.
I am very thankful / grateful for having discovered your work. If there is anything that I can do to help you and there is, I would love to do so. I am an inspirational artist and framer. You have art and you gave me the ideas to frame your inspirations. Steve O Bryan
I love her energy! However, I do feel she needs a bit of tempering - as Abraham Maslow famously said, 'It isn't normal to know what we want. It is rare and a difficult psychological achievement.' This is not to say we shouldn't be motivated to be and do better. However, it is to say that many of us feel guilty when we have a hard time knowing what we want. For some very good reasons, making important life decisions, as Mel so energetically challenges us to do, is simply not that simple.
@therevchrisyaw well the answer is simple, its never rocket science.. but she did say it's not easy to force yourself to do it. There can't be too many important life decisions to make surely.. I think with the 5 second rule, she's saying more the little things which make up the majority of your daily thoughts, all day everyday Hyundai :)~
I'm really impacted by Mel Robbins, I notice her at Success Magazine and she is amazing. Thank You Mel!! Because there is not enough powerful women out there and you are one of them, we are part of them.
• Loved it! Also entertained by the comments from all the progressive skepticals that are terrified that people can be self-empowered. Terrified that they can't blame others for conditions, terrified that they may also be empowered, and rebellious to ideas that don't reflect an attitude of entitlement. If I was a progressive, I'd hate the presentation too. But, I loved it, especially the belief that we have the choice of being self-empowered all along. Just takes hard work and commitment!
I agree with others that the chance of you existing "1 in 400 [whatever]" is a weak point of the talk. I like the bumpersnicker I found in Berkeley some years ago: "Always remember you are unique just like everybody else". However, if someone gets off with feeling statistically special, chosen or uniquely positioned and that really floats their boat, then great, go for it. The rest of the talk is excellent. Thank you, Mel . . .
Those with the negative comments, are the same who will blame everything else for why they didn't get what they wanted. I played it for my family at dinner and even my kids got it. We are instituting the 5 second rule immediately. Great talk.
400 Trill or Bill - not the point! Change is Simple not Easy Force Yourself to start Get Out of Your Head Get Past your feelings Get past your comfort zone Get Outside If you are inspired, have an impulse, a curiosity - do something with it! You are here to do amazing things. Marry the idea with an action within 5 Seconds or your internal emergency break is pulled and nothing will happen. call someone, write a note, walk over to the person, open your mouth, make a request, ACT or not.
Great talk Mel! I love your humor, authenticity, and no nonsense approach to getting what we want in life. I'll be getting a copy of your book and using the strategies in my own life as well as my coaching clients.
Bummer... was starting to get into her discussion, until she made such a big deal out of the 1 in 400 trillion, instead of the 1 in 400 billion that it should have been. Maybe a few billion off isn't significant to some, but it caused me to zone out on the rest of the talk...
One of the best talks i've seen on TED. I've set my alarm 30 minutes early for tomorrow.. - And it's nice to know the fundementals behind motivation. (The getting out of bed activation energy) and that 5 second Emergency Break rule.. Very powerful insights!

Tough love, but wonderful advice.
Too bad they only work for the general public.
My cynicism isn't a state of mind, but one out of practical experience.
When getting outside of the comfort zone means broken bones or bleeding cuts, you REALLY grow to be cautious of boundaries, and stay where it's safe.
