I set this show up for WOUB-TV and never saw it. We moved to Calif. not long after. We went to see John about a year later in Cotati. He invited us into his bus and told us later he'd been diagnosed with skin cancer. the last year was bad. My friend went to see him play in Athens sometime before that and noticed his shoe was untied and ask him, "can I tie that for you man?" John said, 'it doesn't matter. My feet are so swollen they won't fall off.
I remember him from the Glen Campbell show, how he would be in the back row of the audience, and stand up all of a sudden at the beginning. He was the first bluegrass musician I ever bought an album of when I was 16.
This so so fun. Thank you J. I'm not altogether fond of all this new-fangled stuff like youTube, but gotta love it when you get to share great, ageless stuff like this.
John Hartford is a good example of how TRUE artists reach DEEP into the past to CATAPAULT original art into the future... a true american treasure of songwriting... inspiring musician...
This is simply one of my all-time favorite things on youtube - and I've watched ALOT of videos. John Hartford was such an amazing talent. I would do anything to be able to play this. Thanks for posting this clip!
It was taped in Athens, Ohio--I think at Ohio University. The first part of this video is on the "Ramblin-Julia Belle Swain" video, and the end part(with the credits)is on the "Ramblin-Wolves a Howlin'" video.
jazz rocks, standards rock, blues rock, bluegrass rocks, country rocks, fusion rocks, songwriters rock, rock-n-roll rocks, music rocks: so how do you rate John Hartford? American. True, original, pure, free, unlimited, unbounded, truly free. This is how we're all supposed to be. Thank GOD for Mr. Hartford!
Looks like he was on meth, why so fast and high?

This was shot at OU in Athens, in fall of 1979. I saw myself and ex in front row at end.
