i know theres a lot of freddy adu fanboys here, and he is talented. ive just never thought he was very good at all. he never read the game well at all, always making bad decisions. i know he was young and everything, but watching the youth national team all the other kids were much more intelligent than him. he may have learned had he worked his way though a real youth system, but i doubt it. he was never really capable of "playing the game."

Adu only received so much "hype" because he was incredibly good for his, ahem, "age." Now 4 years later he can't even make the bench at a mid-table French team!! He has barely improved since when he came to fame four years ago. Truth is, it's plain as day that he's probably much older than it is claimed, which explains why he was so good for his age group before and why he has barely gotten any better.

And another thing about Adu, I agree with all these posts saying how overhyped he was when he first went pro. But the reason for this was MLS's financial state back then... before Adu, MLS was losing money by the bucketfuls and on the verge of folding. The league's top execs figured "Hey, let's find a young talented kid, offer him a contract, and make him out to be the sport's next legend." And it worked too- attendence and sales saw a significant increase that year.

Shows how much you know. Adu had a few highlight reel moments, but he wasn't even close to being a dominating force in MLS. He eventually left DCU for another MLS club because he wasn't a regular starter, and when he was, he was playing out of position (Christian Gomez had the #10 role locked down with that team, so Adu had no chance of taking that from him).

When Adu was 15, he was playing in the MLS, which by comparison to the rest of the world is an amateur league (as a Canadian I can say that). When Maradona was 15, he was winning World Cups (youth) for Argentina & was top scorer in the Argentine league.
