  • the bassist is stuck in like a permanent 360 for the entire last minute of the song.

  • a nice drive in the country found nice cliff to drive off....

  • I love julian spinning in circles

  • holy fuck they suck

  • @Aspiret620 the quality is too terrible for you to even judge that solely based off this video

  • @breakfasttomorrow

    quality is so edgy

  • that sweater was the fifth member of the band

  • Hey, I know it's totally shameless and lame to solicit your covers.. especially on a Neutral Milk Hotel page. But. With that said, I just did a cover of Engine and would be so grateful to anyone who would like to listen to it. (obviously it's got nothing on the original but I tried my best) thanks

  • This would be such an intense show to see.

    I want his Red Sweater.

  • Jeff Mangum is beyond an human drugs. I think his altered state of conscienceness comes from something most of us refuse to comprehend.

  • me wants his epic sweater

  • 9 dislikes? what the hell? this is intense.

  • So fucking good. On a different note, why do people remove comments? whatever happened to network neutrality? Such bullshit, youtube should remove the ability to remove other peoples comments.

  • The live versions of cuts from 'Avery Island' are so damn good. I think NMH really found its identity as a band when Jeff recruited the other three guys. At that point, it went from being just an abstract vehicle for Mangum's compositions to being a true group.

  • I would give anything to have been able to attend this show.

  • this music saves my life daily

and sometimes it's not even that good,

it's just nice to know that there are people out there who hate the same things I do.

  • So great. So goddamn great.

  • lmao look at julian spinning around.

    BRILLIAAAAANT

  • the things i would do to be able to attend this

  • whose chubs thats on the 2nd guitar? anyone ?

  • Jeff could probably sell that sweater for a ton of money if he still has it

  • yeah, he probably could...if he weren't dead.

  • That's not Jeff's thing. And gnrev you're a horrible troll.

  • I would let Chuck Lidell nut punch me a hundred times just to see them live. Anyone else have any other suggestions for good bands like neutral milk hotel? reply please

  • As we all know, theres no band like Neutral Milk Hotel: they're their own brand of perfect but I do recommend Beirut and maybe a bit of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah as well :)

  • Two great bands that were inspired by Neutral Milk Hotel are The Decemberists and Arcade Fire

  • Arcade Fire is the shit, ill check out Decemberists, the new Paul Banks album "Julian Plenti" has a song called "Unwind" and it sounds pretty similar to NMH. Any other suggestions?

  • Comment removed

  • I would say, The Olivia Tremor Control but they are not that simmilar. Great nonetheless!

  • weakerthans, frightened rabbit, tokyo police club, pretty girls make graves, arcade fire, stars, muse, three mile pilot, thingy, etc.

  • I still thing the Jaguar is a very cool guitar, I'd like to own though my favourite guitar is the Telecaster.

  • and I knew the world was over, so I took a look outside...

  • But don't take those pills your boyfriend gave you

    You're too wonderful to die!!

  • awesome jersey.

  • Jaguars, Jagstangs, Mustangs got really popular in the 90's...Sonic Youth, Yo La, Cobain, Pavement popularized them.

  • is this Sudsy Malones in Cincy..I think i was there...somehow got in the back door

  • then you are unbelievably lucky

  • the atmosphere is just awesome.

  • blah blah i try to sound like i know theory... when a power chord already consists of the root note and the fifth... so the point of saying powerchords and fifths was completely not needed... but he doesnt just use powerchords... youre a fool.

  • School Chess Club - break into the cool kid's garage - take all their drugs - steal all their instruments - and play a gig !

  • why doesnt jeff play more shows? nmh needs to play moar shows!

  • .....read a book dude

  • ha this video was actually taken on my sixth birthday.

  • I love that sweater.

  • I do too. I like how a lot of famous people can only be seen wearing something once, while there is quite a bit of footage of Jeff with the sweater.

  • I love how they're just flailing while performing, so great.

  • i think everyone once in a while, jesus is reincarnated i only wish there was other versions of this

  • what's up with that guy spinning in circles? he's pretty cool. He must be dizzy cos he keeps bumping into jeff (id be dizzy too) at least he can still drop the fat bass.

  • best explanation would be drugs, I'd say anyway.

  • holy crap! i have this show on my computer, and i always thought in my head, during this song, the scene that i saw, looked exactly like this.

i'm glad there is video of this. wish i could've seen them live....

  • Jeff couldn't handle social situations (agoraphobic...?) and last I heard hes been making these crazy indi films that no one want to talk to him about. I really with he was still around, I would have loved to see em live.

  • Not true. He made one movie with Elephant Six, Major Organ and the Adding Machine, which was just recently released. Also, the reason why nobody talks to him about it is because, quite frankly, nobody can find him.

  • Not true. I just saw him play live last month in Chicago with the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Tour. Look up "Jeff Mangum Chicago" on youtube, and watch when he played Engine with Julian. It's amazing.

  • I know, hence why I mentioned the movie just being released.

  • Do you know what the movies called?

  • Major Organ and the Adding Machine

  • what ever happened to this band?

    they are so good

  • Incredible. It reminds me of a crowded sidewalk in N.Y.C. or something. It's funny how Julian is just spinning around with his bass.

  • i never thought id see mangum rocking the fuck out like he does in this, especially with that sweater

  • I would do anything for Jeff Mangum. He has a Charles Manson-like hold over me. He's like my Severus.

  • It looks like the fucking stage is going to collapse. True punk rock.

  • God Damnit...thats all i can say...

  • seeing these guys would have given me the hugest boner. But I think Jeff would've found that displeasing.

  • hahahaha

  • rust never sleeps

  • Don't judge all jeffs lyrics based on one crappy bootleg recorded on a so so cam from a blurry angle, 11 years ago, its not fair to him, being such as amazing lyrically (AND MUSICALLY! LISTEN TO "IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA" the whole album, you don't here singing saw and bagpipes in many bands, ever.) Its impossible to make you understand how i feel about jeff's music. You HAVE to APPRECIATE it, to understand that what he's singing about.

  • Wow, this preformance is a little over 10 years ago-man how time flies

  • I have to totally agree with Andy. There are a lot of bands out there that sound really shitty, but at least this one has some lyrical merit unlike every fucking emo and "rock" song today.

  • Why can't people just like what they want.

    There's no persuasion.

    There's no intellectualizing.

    There's no reason to argue.

    Be indifferent.

It fills me with grief watching you twits argue over your own preferences, it's a hopeless battle.

  • Oh Jeff....

  • i like it when jeff plays his guitar alone, but variety is essential for survival.

  • I think anyone who thinks Neutral Milk Hotel are great performers in any obvious conventional sense are sadly mistaken. But anyone who looks at the band that way is tragically missing what actually made the band so great.

Simply put, Jeff Magnum was a brilliant song-writer and they were each innovative and creative musicians.

I mean sure he wavers off key from time to time and there's mass amounts of feedback and distortion but that's what makes it stylisticly unique and interesting damnit!

  • Exactly!

  • But then we would listen shitty music like you do. Thinking creatively about music keeps us from being stupid. Try.

  • Jeff is like the deity of all 90's independent music, and there isn't a soul who has reason to deny him that. He wasn't on drugs like so many people jump to say. Personally, this may sound crazy, but I think he died in a freak accident, and we never got news of it, and rose from the dead in new zealand in 2001, and played the Walking Wall of Beards show, then ascended to someplace were 'We will fold and freeze together, Far away from here

There is sun and spring and green forever' call me crazy.

  • In THIS SONG, there is a line that explains that he never took drugs Also, a few months ago jeff got married. (!) aren't you glad you are wrong?

    I love jeff.

  • Actually i read an interview with him from like 1996 were he says he did smoke pot while he was a kid, but oh well. And he got married like 2 years ago i think, to a german director, and she's pretty. "All the drugs i don't have the guts to take to sooth my mind" i think he's talking about prescription drugs, singing as the other ones don't sooth as much as 'inspire'.

    I love jeff too

  • As much as I love NMH; the diety of "90's indie music" title goes to Robert Pollard.

  • You're damn right, kid! These guys are great - Uncle Bob is gloriously wonderful.

  • A bit conspiracy theory for me.

  • @AndyUnwritten Mangum*

  • I just took a look at your favorites, you're basically a dick.

  • yeah, fuckers.go read Art book for Dummies.

  • true but its the songwriting that really makes this music. mangum's songs are good enough to do badly

  • dude if you've ever heard the studio recording it's way better than this. it's just the fact that this was recorded on a camera that makes it all slushy and hard to hear the individual instrument parts.

  • Well aren't you both hardcore little shits.

You are both conceited and ignorant assholes.

Can't you just learn to apprecate what you have?

    Quite asking for something extra.

    Gah.

  • You don't even know me.

The drums sucks in this, but still a kick ass performance.

avelaz3, thank you for posting the video.

avelaz3, thank you for posting the video.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • This is really cool. Easy to forget that NMH had a lot of punk roots with the studio stuff, but this seems to back that up. Slightly related fact- A friend of mine loaned me the 33 1/3 book about this, and that said that apparently the Minutemen were the unanimous favorite punk band in the Elephant 6 collective. Weird, considering the Minutemen are, while stream-of-conscious-influenced, still very realistic, while most E6 bands are surrealistic (if that's a word.)

  • This video makes me ridiculously happy. I think it's just seeing Jeff Mangum with such energy.

  • or me it's seeing Jeff Mangum with such a sweater. I just found out today that one of my teachers ligitimately knows everyone in the original E6 collectice (not extended family bands, mostly the early days bands). Cool, but kind of wierd.

  • Haha, that's cool as shit.

  • What I think this song is about two lover (possibly gay) who finally have sex. However, after they do that their relationship goes to hell. So he's saying how fucked up everything gets. What do you other Neutral Milk Hotel fans think the songs about?

  • I guess its about his hate against people who use sex as a means of power.

  • i don't see what being gay has anything to do about it. but i read an interview and it was about how he hates when people use sex to gain power.

  • i believe the song is a reference to judas

  • i love the trombone part, it adds such a cool effect to the already awesome song

  • I love the beginning, haha. This is perhaps my favorite song in all of my collection. It is so surrealist to me, it really speaks for an entire generation that was disenfranchised from the norms of the time.

    Great video, so much energy!

  • What is up with that wicked guitar tone he always has? Nice little heads a-bobbin' in the front.

  • oh i would have died to see them love

    damn you jeff mangum

    come back to the world

    fbhysagbha

  • And the first one tore a picture

Of a dead and hanging man

    Who was kissing foreign fishes

That flew right out from this hands

And when I put my arms around him

I felt the blushing blood run through my cheeks

And an eeriness surrounded when his tongue began to speak

And he said...Oh boy you are so pretty

Enough to wrap tight in rice-paper string...

  • i love this song - thanks for uploading this performance.

  • Jeff Mangum come play for us again !!

  • Yes, please!!

  • I love this.

  • where is this?

  • First of all, the Shaggs rule!

  • The drummer is awesome. You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

  • If you don't like Jeff Mangum I don't like you.

  • haha, i love the fact that julian is just spinning around in circles the entire time

  • i love them

  • gracias jeff...

tu musica nos hace la vida mas facil!!!

  • This is purely awesome. Freaking awesome song, very interesting...

  • best

    song

    ever

except Maybe Mike Brown's walking shadow blues

  • Shut up Equinox, this may not be their best live performance, but go check out oh comely and two headed boy at a different show. NMH are inspirational.

  • Awful performers, excellent songwriting (in my opinion). Thing is, I find it endearing.

  • f***ing fantastic! :)

  • That sweater is awesome.

  • I fuckin LOOOVE this song!!! Such a great groove - it's almost a HAPPY song!!!

  • I love the feeling you get as you slowly unravel the meaning behind songs like this. Neutral Milk Hotel, along with every other band that used to be in the now extinct Elephant 6 collective, is amazing!

  • This song (like almost allo of NMH) is a masterpiece. It's a pity that live videos rarely have a good audio quality.

  • Neutral Milk Hotel is propaly better than most stuff you lisen to

  • Bite your tongue!

  • That's because you're from the Ukraine and you don't understand anything.

  • Come on, how many times do you need to say you don't like them?

  • Neutral Milk Hotel is probley one of the greatest bands

  • when will jeff make another album? i hope it happens one day.

  • most likely never... he's fled the public eye

  • He has already made 3 new albums. The officially release live solo album 'Live at Jittery Joes', the sound collage 'Orange Twin Field Works vol. 1' and the album by Major Organ and her Adding Machine.

  • amazing. jeff and NMH rules. just rules all.

  • They had that place jumpin!! I wish they still toured...

  • ditto

  • Wow - thanks for the video!

I have only found NMH this year and am Completely obsessed.

This video is WAY better than I could have dreamt of.

Like your college chess club took magic mushrooms and found a stash of leccy guitars.

  • this video rules

  • I love bands that are better experienced live than recorded.

  • oh and to those of you who were wondering , they have an EP. called everything is.. released around 2001 i think, but thats all , besides ITAOTS and On Avery Islandd

  • ITAOTS is wrong... its IAAOTS ... in an aeroplane over the sea

  • No, its definitly ITAOTS. Just look at the side of the cd.

  • freak... yeah, i realize now

  • Well it was actually released even before On Avery Island, but it was a single back then. The extra two tracks are from the same period though.

  • thank you

  • soooooo good.

    i love jeff.
