  • Dear Valentina - Dear supporters of Val : This video is one of the most interresting works . after two years , going to youtube , I choose this sonata#1 which was a revelation for me .

The piano and/or the registry, microphone, were not fantastic but the talent of Val is here the highest. Many thanks to all of you , very good year , hoping to see val at the piano festival of La roque d'antheron in France. succcess guaranteed.........

  • It's amazing to see you play, your fingers don't seem to be striking-they glide-I'm not only listening-i'm enjoying watching you play!!

  • Hi Valentina! Are your Rachmaninov CDs released already? I can not find them anywhere.

  • Comment removed

  • 2 words, fucking perfect... ever since I started studying music theory and harmony intensively I cannot stop listening to classical music, especially rachmaninoff and oh woman your performance is as awesome and perfect as it gets...

  • Bravo!!! bravissimo valentina!!!

  • i swear you are crazy good

  • theres only one thing i totally dislike about rachmaninoff.. after playing for several hours, my right pinky hurts badly...

  • I understand the reason for the relaxing of the hands but to me it looks like you have a love affair with the piano. I mean that as a compliment. You flow with it. You bring tears to my eyes with such musical beauty. I grew up with all this wonderful music. Thank you so much.

  • MAESTRA VENGA A MEXICO !!!!!

  • Your playing is mesmerising. Like a magician your hands move faster than the eye can see, and your magic washes over us. You take me to a place of peace as you draw us into a place faster and more pleasurable than the conscious mind can operate.

  • Hi Valentina

I am just a little boy who wants to improve his piano technique.. do you have any tip for me? if you would say what helps i would love to do it^^ i can't play 12-14 h a day but i wanna get better =) Actually i do arpeggios, scales , and some Czerny etudes. Id would be very nice of you if you have some exercises for me =)

I love your music, your videos and you =)

  • Valentina, I think you play some of the best Rachmaninov I have ever heard! All of your music is good, but the Rachmaninov is the best. One day I hope to play Rachmaninov concertos, but I think it's a little ways off for now. I'll get there one day though.

  • I really admire you Valentina. I am a 14-year-old pianist who loves Rachmaninov, too, and you completely inspire me and my entire family. Sometime I hope to play this sonata, too! Please keep posting your videos. They are all absolute treasures! Warm regards, Milou

  • U are unreal, i'm an admirer of ur art!!!!!!!!!

  • Please come to florida state university and give a masterclass. I would die if I was chosen. I love how you play Rachmaninoff.

  • 12 peaople listen electro and house all day.

  • @mikicase1 I listen to house..doesnt mean anything..

  • love the dress!

  • Valentina, you inspired me to learn this piece, and now I have a video of the third movement on my channel. I'm only 18 years old, so any constructive criticism is really appreciated from a talented pianist like you.

  • Nightmare (the performance). By the end of the 1st mov. I recognized the music.

Good luck with the career, Ms. Lisitsa...

  • 6:43 someone cough

Lilya Zilberstein MOLTO MOLTO MEGLIO !!!!! Gyorgy Cziffra, ancora una volta, ci manca proprio tanto !!!

  • magnifique et puissant jeu interressant

  • Excellent!!!!!**************************

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! I have to watch it with no image, I mean listen to it without watching it, there is a delay between the image and the audio, they are out of sync, and it's wrong. The performance is so amazing, but I can't watch it because of the delay. :( sad.. If you can, get some help when converting the video files :(

    PS: You're the best!

  • Oh My Fuckin God :O

  • Love to see you and that young Stephane Tetreault on Cello perform, he feels it too that kid, you would take him to whole new vistas.

  • This interpretation is not very good. It lacks a lot of sensitivity and some notes are just banged out without much creativity. Then there were some baffling changes in dynamics from what the score tells you. I know the score is just an indication of the composers intentions but why change something that in sounded better in its original form in any case? I'm talking about the (in this video absent) contrast between forte and piano in the opening and similar sections

  • @Pianoplayer002

    Bitch please.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. How I hate these Youtube "music critics".

She's a concert pianist, you're just a guy with Internet access.

For real? Your opinion doesn't really matter.

    DEAL WITH IT.

  • @arthurmendonga

    Bitch please.

If you don't like it, dont' read it. How I hate these Youtube "commenter critics".

This section has some good commenters, and some guys with internet access.

For real? Your annoyances don't matter to anyone. Quit wasting comment space and

    DEAL WITH IT.

  • @Pianoplayer002 VERO !

  • @Pianoplayer002

I agree, but sometimes I don't think it is worth posting a comment. You have to consider the people that actually read these comments. I'm playing this Sonata right now, so I'm having real problems listening to this. I was watching to see if I could pick up how she's doing some fingerings or how she splits the hands. I'm curious what you think of her raved about Op. 39 No. 6 Etude. I have real problems with departure from the score there.

  • que mujer tan bella siente todo lo que toca

  • I'm in highschool and I'm learning this for a recital I'm giving in a few months. SO HARD!!!!!!!!! but totally awesome!!!!!!! so excited!!!

  • wooooow .

  • hello valentina! i´m very happy to know that you respond to your fans! it reveals a gentle soul and humble, besides the great artist you are. don´t have to answer me though eheh

keep posting your videos i´ll watch them all!

  • WHEN IN MEXICO AGAIN???

  • Valentina, When you come to Brazil to witness this amazing talent? thks!!

  • Valentina, I just love you!! :D ... thanks for the great music!

  • Amazing. /clap

  • delightful:)

  • l love the piano very, very much, l enjoy it every time l play it and so are you, l see. l liked your piano, even if l heard it the first time, l loved it. Hope that someday l can play the piano much better than now and even if l can't, l'd still continue to play, till the last day of my life. =)

  • Your performances are documents of true and highest artistry!!!

And great that you share such a large number of videos.

Also interesting, that you use often/sometimes(?) a Bösendorfer.

Myself I am a photographer and have had last year the chance to make photos during production of this piano in their factory.

I liked to see and document how such a masterpiece comes into reality. If you or anybody else interests in these photos, you are invited to visit: three"w"_imago_pro_tc

  • Hi Valentina, please come to México soon, we really want to see you!!

  • Magnificent! And the 2 other movements are also breathtaking.

Valentina, thank you for teaching me to love and appreciate Rachmaninoff!

  • somebody tune that piano! hahaha. excellent performance as always Valentina...I cannot say how much I feel honored and lucky to see you perform in Madison, WI at the piano shop a few years ago for like $15. 2 hours of liszt, and then getting to chat with you afterward!? a life experience I will never forget and to see where you are going with your career, I just feel so lucky to have seen you in such a personable recital situation. cheers =D

  • it's absolutely magical playing...

  • @ValentinaLisitsa Will you be uploading Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata anytime soon???

  • lol, if she was in Peru about to perform, do you really think she would be going through her youtube video's? The person responding is probably her manager/assistant.

  • :0 awesome! I love Rachmaninov, Fortunately he was born when he was otherwise I would be afraid he would be something of a metal guitarist or drummer! man he had power.

  • she is the best

  • Valentina!!! one question... When will you be playing in Montreal ? Cheers and thank you so much for sharing your music and great talent on youtube! Alexandre

  • Really Great !!! " 詩情 "

    Rachmaninov & von Goethe も天国で

    Mexico

  • Hi Valentina, I am Peruvian and an admirer of your art. We would love your fans here, who visited us and make a presentation to see you and hear you live. Here in Peru not only hear cumbia and regaetón. I think of which we have many who enjoy real music. Please think about it and keep it up. Maestra.

  • @lococan I am in Peru right now! and will be playing recital in Lima tomorrow night

    VL

  • @ValentinaLisitsa And what about Brasil, Valentina? You have a lot of big fans here!!!!

  • @ValentinaLisitsa

Wow that's cool. I used to be living in Lima Peru but that was until summer 1970 (just over 40 years ago) !

I'd love to see you play Liszt Feux Follets and Il Lamento (2 pieces I am now working/re-working on).

  • @ValentinaLisitsa Come back to Peru :D.

  • @lococan peruviano hijeuputa

  • @beatsalgado Calmate "hojita", te corroe la envidia....;D

  • @lococan callate indio infeliz

  • At :16 there is a "2 hand arpeggio" and then a brief moment of silence......a similar "arpeggio" is used in another one of Radmaninoff's pieces...and I can't find it! It's like the 2nd half of the arpeggio repeated 2 times with some very strong chords following....and this happens numerous times....it's so bothersome hearing this in my head and not being able to find it...my knowledge of piano repertoire is terrible :/

  • @xHuntedGunzPCGx its one of the etude she plays also

  • @Tubztele In this comment the "Rachmaninov", by that I mean Chopin, piece was in reference to the opening of his Op.31 Scherzo in b-flat minor. The same pitches are really what made the Chopin piece ring in my head. Thanks for the comment though!

  • Valentina, when do you record it ??

Please ! consign it in a disk to immortalize this unspeakable moment of pure music.

  • @mg08070675 I have already recorded it

    VL

  • @ValentinaLisitsa

It's so pleasant to have a direct response from you. Thank you for this information, I'm glad to known that it does exists. Actually I'm french teacher of philosophy and I live in France where I never found any record of you. Amazon's site which is rather complete doesn't propose your Rachmaninov record of this sonate.

Perhaps on vol 1, or in the disk named "Recital" but unavailable or out of stock...

How can I do ? I think I'll forced to be still patient.

    Matthieu Giroux

  • @mg08070675 It is not yet released.

    VL

  • @ValentinaLisitsa

  • @ValentinaLisitsa

The site Arkivmusik which lists all the recording of classical music all over the world doesn't even allude to your CD.

I listened tree others interpretations, but never experienced such emotion. Some of them are realy impossible to ear after your's.

I discoverd this 1st sonate a few month ago thanks to you, and this video.

I listened it attentively more than 20 times, I love it.

    Juste two words more,thank you.

    Matthieu Giroux

Just a word more, thank you.

    Matthieu Giroux

  • Absolutely stunning. Her technique, precision, total mastery of the keyboard, allow her to play this incredibly complex material at these astonishing speeds. Whether one appreciates the speeds Valentina plays her music at or not, that's a personal preference, but just to be able to do what she does is simply incredible dedication as well as genious.

    Ron.

    ( ;-} >

  • Jordan Rudess is a baby whit this :D!

  • dam dude is she a vampire or somthin shes whiter than michael jackson lol

  • Agree with fast ass tempo for this, disagree with the broad wearing any clothing.

  • I find myself in the camp of wayward sentimentals reaching out for mommy and crying "Too Fast! Let me off!" However, I would also wrap my comment in caution tape with a small post-it note attached, which reads the following, "I am one of these weirdos you will find listening to Rachmaninoff midi transcriptions, because I like to turn the tempo down to 74% and hear the notes better." My lazy ears! Bravo none the less.

  • I just got the music to this today (late birthday present). The cover was dark red. I figured it was the blood of those who died trying to play this.

  • it's wonderful..

  • @njames8989 lol good start

  • I'm sorry folks. I'm going to have to disagree with all the rave reviews.

While Valentina is a stunning pianist, for my taste, she plays this sonata WAY TOO FAST.

All the intricate and rhythmic passages that Rachmaninoff wrote into the piece are lost when she plays this piece this fast and with SOOOOOO much pedal. If you're going to play fast ease up on the pedal.

I actually turned my back to the computer screen while I listened and it sounded like mush.

  • @dwayneparkerUSA You could the same about Chopin Etudes-:) But they should not. This absolutely from no. one Rachmaninoff player the world

  • @dwayneparkerUSA

yeah sometimes she does that in general. ends up sounding slopping

  • @dwayneparkerUSA Doesn't sound like mush to me. I like her use of pedal. I love her style of playing, so I can't understand your comment. Perhaps you're comparing it to another recording of this that you like better?

  • What an extraordinary playing of an extraordinary piece by Rachmaninoff! I pray to see you one day in Greece playing Rachmaninoff that you play so perfectly... :'(

  • Beautiful !

  • I just feel like sitting here and try to take in this beautiful play by Valentina. Just amazing.

  • A beautiful work, beautifully played.

  • Magic

  • soooo difficult, soooo beautiful!

  • is she best that Lang lang???

  • @edusomniator Lang Lang mix of amateur and something i really dont know - In my point of wiev-:)

  • @solbriller1 had you heard to Claudio Arrau???

  • I read comments today that placed Valentina with Argerich and Hamelin as the three foremost super piano virtuosists alive today. With the addition of Berezovsky and young George Li who is coming up fast on the outside, I would agree.

  • showing the back...sexy!

  • Congratulation for this marvellous playing. Unfortunately the last time has been cut off too quickely

  • I love the lightning in this video, haha. Makes it look like she's made of rubber xD or a 3D animation.

  • Wonderul performace and music!

  • Ms. Valentina, you are brilliant! Anyone know how I can get a recording of her playing this?

  • download a youtube MP3 downloader.

  • Simply Wonderful !

  • Absolutely beautiful. I appreciate how much effort it must have taken to learn, practice, and perfect this piece. Job well done.

  • sooooo amazingly awesome!!! :D

  • Like a God.

  • a Goddess rather

  • Too wonderful an artist for adequate words of praise. Graceful and powerful and flawless,

  • No one plays it because it's kind of impossible to manage to move your hands in such a good way, congratulations but who am I to congratulate a great pianist like you.

  • Perfeito, Valentina. Simplesmente perfeito.

  • one of the biggest Sonata.....well played!

  • Valentina, I'm so glad you are playing this neglected sonata.

It's so profound and deep. I've always loved it, but almost no one plays it.

Valeu Lisitsa! Musicista no mais alto grau.

  • valentina i hope you check the comments of your vids... many comments hahaha but, i saw you play in Monterrey Mexico this sonata!!! it was amazing!! even you were sick that day.. by the way, i never thank you for your help to know where you were going to play, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

  • What i insane piece. I got stunned at some section where i cant just help myself to move. I cant even more at some section especially the octaves sections where your right and left hand goes flying. You also can hit single notes really fast. Your technical skills are brilliant and your sound is incredible. I think this is perfect!

  • So young and already a grand dame of the piano. Molto impressionante!!!

  • Lovely, thanks for sharing this. Such great video too - love the different camera angles.

  • Valentina, this is beyond beautiful.

  • ....sei impareggiabile...Valentina ...sei una pianista meravigliosa!!!!

  • simply the best performance for the most beautiful and difficult sonata by rachmaninoff... god bless you valentina. I live to hear such melodies that you play...

  • ...la grandissima Valentina Lisitsa non ha bisogno di commenti....è semplicemente ..."la Migliore"!

  • molto legato!

I'm not very fond of it because of that, but it's not a bad interpretation. 3.5 stars.

  • She is not human of course. Clear evidence that aliens are already amongst us. :-)

  • which rachmaninoff sonata is this?

  • sonata #1...? jus a geuss... lol

  • to stand out in centuries of pianist, congratulations, in my opinion one of the finest ever, beethoven cried when he saw liszt, i think liszt would cry seeing this

  • That's probably because he saw Liszt's fingers flying everywhere but couldn't hear a damn thing.

    Too soon? :P

  • Wow, yet another Beethoven misconception. There was one recorded witness' account to that event (from Liszt himself) and neither described anything like 'crying'. All that happened was Beethoven, with a big grin on his face went over to Liszt, kissed him on the forehead, congratulated him, and told him that he was going to make alot of people happy in his lifetime.

  • Masterful!

She's harnessed the energy of Rachmaninoff and made it her own.

    Extraordinary technique!

  • This lady can really play some big stuff. Her interpretation of the D minor was very good, but my favourite account of this monumental piece will always be by the great Santiago Rodriguez.

  • why do all of these great pianist never compose their own music? i just don't understand.

  • Towards the end of the 19th century the role of the virtuoso pianist/composer underwent a transformation to what we have today with performance and composition becoming rather distinct occupations. The real pianist/composers of today are jazz pianists IMHO (emphasis--IMHO).

  • Some do !

  • Quite a lot of them do actually. There just isn't much public interest for them to perform their compositions. I imagine its a very personal thing for some people.

  • Comment removed

  • Estupendo!!!!!!

  • An incredible composer, a truly awesome pianist and a beautiful piano - what I wouldn't do to be her at this moment. xXx

  • Thank you for uploading all those great videos! Much apreciated,

  • I keep forgetting to breath during most of this. It's awe inspiring and all encompassing in it's depth from the Composer to the Performer.

  • Have not seen this nice piece in concert programs for a long time although it has a very interesting structure. 1 Faust, 2 Gretchen, 3 Mephisto. It is one of the hardest pieces I worked on so far. It is a real marathon. Wonderfully played and extremly swift!!!

    Thank you very much!

  • I actually put it down and said I would come back to it in a few months. lol Many may disagree but I found the 1st to be harder than the 2nd in terms of my learning. They are both difficult but the difficulty in te 1st lies in playing at the correct pace and maintaining it (like Valentina does so eloquently here.) You are right. It is a real marathon from beginining to end.

  • Valentina is going to make this very very underplayed work a popular choice amongst pianist. I am learning this right now and this Sonata is much more difficult than the 2nd which is a monster in itself. But the 1st sonata is30 minutes of fast passage work and takes a lot to pull off correctly. However, Valentina rises to the occasion and pulls it off so eloquently. This interpretation is beautiful

  • @Hervinbalfour

Exactement ! I'm totaly impressed, and I must say I have discovered it thanks to Valentina and this site. 14 performances recorded for this 1st Sonata all over the word, 82 for the 2d. It's rather difficult to find it, and I really'd like to find the Valentina's interpretation on a CD... I have listened tree other but never experienced such pleasure to listen it.

  • Valentina, congratulations!!! you are an amazing pianist :) I saw you in Bogotá - Colombia with Hilary hahn, I enjoyed so much :-)

I invite you to watch my videos and be my friends in youtube :-) I´m a young cellist :-)

  • So is the pretty dress. She could just wear jeans and a teeshirt, but it looks nicer. Some pianists also find their articulation can help with muscle memory.

  • A beautiful Ukrainian girl on the web who ISN'T starring in a porn? What's the world coming to?

    just kidding :)

Beautiful and talented. You can buy her stuff on Amazon.

  • Absolutely amazing.... Please don't stop playing...

  • Hi Valentina, congratulations!!! you are amazin pianist! I saw you in Bogota with Hilary Hahn, it was amazing :)

  • i will sell myself to the devil so i can be like her......

  • fantastica sonata magnifica esecuzione, da brivido dopo i 5:30!! fantastic!

  • amazing! splendid ! Bravissimo Valentina-also the video where you have black clothes ( 8619 views ) - different compared to this one - but our feeling is different one year and next year ... Do you expext to release your video all the time or just the time of the promotion . anayway , we never forget you and can buy the published video-disk

    Michael ( france )

  • i love u i want be like u i am rana from eygpt and i am pianist

  • Bravissimo! Amazing performance! I must say that Lisitsa is the greatest interpreter of Rachmaninoff I have ever seen, and although this beautiful sonata does not receive the attention it deserves, she still pulls it off with much grace and lyricism!!

  • Fascinating to hear the interpretive changes that Ms Lisitsa has made since the earlier video she posted of her performing the same sonata. It was already very finely played then, but now I see that there's a new concision, clearer emphasis of some points, and more coherence within the longer lyrical passages. She reveals many new features of the piece. What a wonderful pianist and musician!

  • you must come to chile

  • Oh oh ces beaux doigts qui volettent !!

  • It is beautiful! Thanks you,Valentina!

  • i see you in youtube and I feel you near me, playing in front of me... I wish I could hear you sometime live playing such nice pieces. Will u ever visit Greece?

  • Your playing gives this Sonata a new charakter. i never new that there are so many beautiful hidden melodies in it since this recording. your technique and musical understanding is truely a gift for us piano music lovers! thanks so much for making it possible to hear (and see) this here on youtube in phenomenal quality!

  • Lovely!

Truely, Rachmaninoff was a genius at finding the purest form of beauty in his homeland Russia.

In his soul, that I've always hear in his music, full of such boldness. The great awareness of how truely beautiful something close to him is.

Truely, life is greater than we can imagine.

Thanks for sharing this amazing music. Truely lovely performance.

  • OMG New POST Ty for posting i love your music

  • I saw her play this in Washington DC last month. It was a phenomenal concert! Thanks for posting...

  • She had a concert in DC last month?? *sigh* I wish I were in the DELMARVA area for that. It must have been incredible, no doubt. Only recently have I discovered Valentina's beautiful playing; she's now one of my favorite pianists.

    Clay

  • Beautiful! Both the playing and the player!

  • BRAvO!!!!!!

  • Thank you , I knew it ! Bravissima ...

    :-D

  • Wonderful. Just absolutely wonderful.

I'm watching the rain whilst listening to this, and it seems to fit the mood.
