As someone that had a Top Secret military clearance, I had information that others didnt. There are often reasons that things are not told to the general public, because it could endanger troops, or give away an inside informant etc. Things are often kept quiet to also prevent the undermining of morale. Vietnam was a FUBAR'd war, due to politicians (many with No military experience) trying to micromanage a war from Washington.
